The MEGA is a HUGE thing with a Mercedes V12, 4WD, nice shape (a la
McLAREN F1), hydraulic suspension, 2.2m wide, super luxurious interior,
etc ... Apparently MEGA is french. How long will it live ? They have
probably developed the car for a saudi or japanase tycoon
Opel are selling a Isuzu 4WD vehicle. I think the base version is
called Frontera while the "luxus" is the Monterey. GM family affair

The Frontera's been on sale in the UK since last year's Motorfair. In
the UK they're all called Fronteras.

| Two places that I will never visit ever again.
1) London Arena - Try getting home after a show in the pouring rain.
2) N.E.C. Birminham - This Saturday after the car show .
TRIP REPORT.
============
Arrived at Birminham via M1 then M6 from North London , journey time about
2 Hours - Took a nice slow drive .
Next two hours sitting in solid traffic on dual carriage way on to N.E.C
having followed N.E.C. Motor Show car park signs.
At end of dual carriage way police were turning traffic about in opposite
direction. Having decided not to give up arrived in N.E.C. car park about
20 mins later. Parked car and paid 4 pounds parking fee.
Queued in rain for 25 mins to get into N.E.C. .
At last I got in ....about 5 deep crowds around all main car stands. The
crowds were like a football match.
The Home Show was just a collection of stands, with a worse rugby scrum of
people because the stands were closer together.
NEVER...NEVER again.

Sounds just like the Motor Fair I went to a couple of years ago in
London. Queuing, huge crowds, getting in and out.
The cars I did get to see were all locked, and they were only things like
Fords and Hondas (hook). I could understand the exotic cars being
locked. So I've not bothered since.
Best car show I went to was at G-Mex in Manchester, no crowds, and you
could try all the cars, mind you it weren't as big as the others.

The last time I went to the Motorshow, I went during the week
and it wasn't too crowed at all. You could get on quite a
lot of the fenced off stands (Morgan, TVR, although not
Ferrari).

1916.16 | The NEC, obviously, doesn't change! | NEWOA::SAXBY | Mean and Brooklands Green! | Tue Oct 27 1992 17:22 | 16 |

I went to the NEC many moons ago (maybe the first one there?) on a
Saturday and it was exactly as desribed. This was enough to disuade me
from ever going back.
For the last few years I've attended Motorfair at Earls Court as, for
me, it's a lot more convenient and I always aim to get there for the
late afternoon/early evening cheaper ticket. This has never failed to
provide enough time to get 'round. Crowds are unknown and the staff on
the stands seem happier to stand and chat at that time of the day as
they wind down.
The NEC show looks good this year, but I'll withstand the temptation to
attend and save my motor show fix until Earls Court in '93.

Went yesterday (Wednesday).
After hearing reports of 8 mile tailbacks etc. I decided to go by train. Parked
my car at Oxford station, caught the 8:14 train, arrived at the NEC @9:30
walked straight in, no queues, no delays...wonderful...The rail ticket came
with the admission price to the NEC included.
I zipped round all the (what I thought would be the) more popular stands whilst
the place was still almost empty. Great !
The place had filled up by about 10:30, and it was difficult to move after
then, certainly trying to see the MG or the Jaguar XJ220 for example was next
to impossible after this time...
Not a bad day, in all....

Went along yesterday, found no problem with the traffic. Went up the
M40, got off at Warwick took the back roads to the NEC and drove
straight in.
The way home was just as easy, straight out, back to Warwick and back
down the M40. The A34 was a different story though with the roadworks.
The show itself was crowded, took me 10 mins of queueing to see the
XJ220, bit of bad planning to have it stuck on the back of the Jag
stand blocking an aisle. The McLaren stand was better for viewing
purposes though, unresticted viewing right round the stand.

I'm going up to the show on Sunday. I'll be using the M40. Is the back route
to the NEC from Warwic easy to follow ? Which road/s do I need to take.
Thanks,

re:the route.
Drive up to Warwick (follow the castle signs) Take the A4177 then the
A45, takes you right to the NEC. Its well signposted and should drop
you off at carpark E5. When you leave carpark E5 turn right, through
the gap in the dual carriageway (it looks illegal but it isn't, we asked)
and turn right again. Takes you back onto the roundabout for the A45 and
away from all the trouble!!!
Well it worked for us,

Press day is today, tomorrow is preview day, which means you pay 12
quid to get in instead of the normal 7.50. A lot of manufacturers seem
to have given out tickets for the 21st.
We're going on Monday - Car Week magazine were giving away the show
guide with last weeks edition and What Car? are giving a voucher for a
free ticket (when you pay for a ticket) for Friday or Monday - adds up
to a few quid saved.

Guide has a cover price of 3. Whether it's worth it or not is your
decision.
I usually buy the guide there and read it on the way home and think 'I
wish I had seen that', so getting it for a 1 (magazine price) in time
to read before the show was good value for me.
Mark
PS This was last week's magazine though, so you'll need to ask your
newsagent if he's got any left.
