1669.0. "Help on hire a Porsche or Ferrari ?!" by KERNEL::PENAT () Wed Jan 22 1992 15:06

    Does anyone know where I could hire (at a reasonable price) a Porsche
    924 or a Ferrari Testarossa for a week.

    I am aware that it is very expensive but any idea on price would help.

    I live close to London, and I would be willing to travel anywhere
    in the south of England.

    A porsche 924 or Testerossa !!!!!!!!!!!!!! no much difference there,
    only 1 is basically a van and the other proberbly goes like sh!t off a
    shovel....

    Try Town and country to hire the rossa and others such as lambo's etc.
    last time I looked it was about 2600 per week for the rossa, T&C
    advertise in "CAR", some should be able to give you the number or I
    will dig out an old copy when I go home tonight and post it tommorow.

    Ps AVIS do the lesser exotics eg 924, 944 ( is this a lessor exotic ;-) )
    and you may be able to get DEC discount.

Companies that hire cars such as Ferrari's usually want a cash deposit for
the car; Town & Country certainly do; and it's currently a 10,000 deposit
on a 348TB (el cheapo Ferrari)!

You also need to arrange your own insurance for such vehicles; which will be a
tad on the pricey side for short periods such as a week.

They also have weird age restrictions on performance/mega-expensive cars too.

The 924 would be a different matter altogther; since it would be an older
and drastically cheaper car.

1669.3I wish you luck ;-)XNOGOV::LISAGive quiche a chanceWed Jan 22 1992 16:469
    I tried to hire a Ferrari for one day last September. I had no luck at
    all. No car hire companies admitted to having one and they didn't know
    anyone that did. Shame really - I wanted to drive myself to the
    register office on my wedding day and then give my *husband* a lift to
    the reception .... we ended up with a BMW .... couldn't even find a
    porche :-(

    There's a company called "Guy Salmon" (or something like) who did
    do assorted unusual cars - I think they had an office near Gatwick.
    This was about 3/4 years ago and I don't know whether they had any
    Ferarri's. Maybe they're still in business.

    Guy Salmon or Town and Country Cars will rent Ferraris, Porsches,
    Lotuses (Loti?), RangeRovers, Rolls-Royces, you name it...

    They both have at least one London office.

    It would probably be cheaper to buy a 924 rather than hire a
    Testarossa !

    There is/was a company called 'Reid Performance Cars' that claimed to
    have desirable vehicles for rent. Adverts used to appear in CAR mag
    each month, but I haven't noticed them of late.

    I also cannot see how you would suggest a 924 Porsche in the same
    request as a Ferrari Testarossa. Still, both would be better than
    a run-of-the-mill Ford Orion/Escort - well one of them would !    ;-)

Reed Performance Cars
 021-414 1747 (Birmingham - but they deliver)

They certainly have the Testarossa, plus the range of Porsche.
Prices start at 35 for XR2i etc, through about 200 for the 944, and if you
need to ask about the cost for the Testarossa...

hope that helps,

1669.13To hire or not to hireKERNEL::PENATThu Jan 30 1992 13:4815

    Just for the record, I have contacted Reed Performance Cars and
    the only performance cars they had available was a Ferrari 328GTX.
    They did not do any other performance cars, that includes Porsches.

    The price for the Ferrari 517 a day or 2837 for a week.
    Delivery from B'ham to Reading 70 + VAT.

    I'll be thinking about hiring it or not !!!

    Thanks for all your inputs.

1669.15512 better than a TestarossaVIVIAN::JD_WARDThu Feb 06 1992 15:508

    	The Ferrari Testarossa is no longer made. It has been replaced by
    the 512Tr which at 130000 pounds is "cheap" at the price !

    	It is a faster and better car that the Testarossa with a top speed
    of 192m.p.h and 421bhp @ 6,750rpm. It does 0-60mph in just 4.8 seconds.

    picture of 92 model outside the gates at Maranello. Still the flat 12
    but increased valve lift has bumped up output - nicer interior, new
    alloys, 348 style front end...

    Have they only changed the name to 512TR - cars appears the same. The
    local mag' called it a Testarossa (although you dont have to be a MENSA
    graduate to write for some of the local car mags!!)

    confused??
1669.18KAOOA::LAVIGNETue May 05 1992 14:486
    The car looks very much the same but it is almost completely new parts
    and the engine is all new,thus they have decided to go to a new
    name,512 TR= 5litre 12 cylinder TestaRossa.

    regards,
    JP (hoping to get a ride in one in a couple of weeks)
1669.19ULYSSE::CHEVAUXPatrick Chevaux @VBE, DTN 828-5584Wed May 06 1992 16:458
    They have replaced the 'small' (15") wheels by 18" rims. That should
    really make a big change in:

    	- cornering precision (much lower profile tyres)
    	- braking             (bigger brakes)

    The 512TR is reported to be slightly LIGHTER than the previous TR.
    Weight is certainly the biggest problem (applies to Diablo as well).
1669.20$194,450....$4500 gas guzzler tax..ELMAGO::TTOMBAUGHCeramic Nose Puppys here now !Wed May 06 1992 22:5913
    From the June '92 issue of Road & Track:

    "Though the factory claims the overall weight is down 88 lbs. from
    the old TR, our weigh-in shows an increase of 55lb.; at 3715 lb.,
    the 512TR weighs more than a Cadillac Eldorado."

    0-60   4.7 sec.

    1/4 mile   12.9 sec @ 112 mph

    Perhaps a tad quicker than an Eldorado though.

    Sorry to be a bore, re .14 the question is whats a 328 GTX ?

    (Could it be a 328 GTS, ie apprx 2 years old and one of the last
    "reasonably" styled ferrari's.

    Anybody got the latest on Reed performance cars ? I called the number
    in .11 (021 414 1747) and got the unobtainable tone. Any alternatives ?

    Thanks in advance,

1669.24Avis luxury car hireSHIPS::SHADBOLT_SWed Aug 26 1992 15:0512
    Just called the luxury car division of Avis on 071 235 3235. The only
    "sports" machines they have for rent are as follows:

    	Porsche 944 S
    	Porsche 911 Carerra Targa
    	Mercedes 300 SL

    Prices depend on hire period, but, as an example the 944 is available
    for 257-26 per day and the other two at 341-26 per day. These prices
    are for a 7 day hire period and are inclusive of insurance, VAT and a
    collision damage waiver. Delivery is free in London, but will be
    charged for elsewhere.
