1329.2 | There are lots of illegal plates about | JANUS::BARKER | Jeremy Barker - T&N/CBN Diag. Eng. - Reading, UK | Sun Jan 06 1991 00:07 | 16 |
| The answer is no.
The characters on the number plate must be:
- in an approved style - I believe that there are about 2 or 3 different
ones, but they all look fairly similar
- correctly spaced - numbers and prefix/suffix letter (if applicable) as
one group separated by a space from a second group with the letters and
no spaces between the letters/numbers in each group
Apart from the index number the plate may have no markings other than the
BS type approval code (this is a new requirement and doesn't apply to older
plates).

Does this apply to the registration date of the car (in the same way
that silver-on-black is dated), or does it apply if you purchase a
new set of plates, regardless of the date of registration ?
Does this mean that dealers are no longer allowed to advertise on the
number plates which they fit (at higher cost than local auto factors) ?

1329.4 | The date of manufacture of the plate is what matters | JANUS::BARKER | Jeremy Barker - T&N/CBN Diag. Eng. - Reading, UK | Wed Jan 09 1991 01:34 | 15 |

It applies to plates manufactured after a certain date. I don't know what
the date in question is.

Yes. One source told me that the main point of the regulations was to stop
this sort of 'free' advertising. Another mentioned some EC thing.

1329.5 | Silver-on-black | EDSAC::MARSHALL | Waterloo Sunset | Wed Jan 09 1991 09:12 | 13 |
| Although all plates manufactured after a certain date must conform to the new
rules, regardless of the age of the car, there is an exemption for
silver-on-black plates. You may put new plates of this style on a car, provided
that:
- the car was originally equipped with silver-on-black plates
- it has never had black-on-white/yellow plates in the interim
- fitting b-on-w/y plates would adversely affect the car's value
or something like that. Not sure about the last point; I think that may be to
do with keeping the original plates on re-registration rather than the style of
plates...

>> On the subject of number plates - is it a legal requirement to have the
>> rear plate illuminated?
Yes it is. In 1978 the maximum penalty for this was 25. I think it's
at least double this now.
I pleaded being an impoverished student and got off with a fine of 3, plus
1 for the broken brake light cover (showing an unauthorised white light
to the rear). Of course 4 was a lot of money in those days...
I don't think it is an endorsable offence though. (It wasn't then).

| Does anybody know ??
Are 3D Plates illegal ?? and if so why ??
My car has them, but I have been told that they are illegal, but nobody
is able to tell me why.
Also as yet (touching wood now) I have not been stopped by the police
for this.

The way I understand this is that it will/is illegal to get new plates in most
styles/spacings, but not illegal to already own them. It may on the other hand
be that it is illegal to have them on a car registered after a set date.

| To get rid of a Q plate, you must re-register the car abroad, then re-import to
the UK, and get an ordinary plate. This will ahve the prefix/suffix letter
in accordance with the date of manufacture given on the foreign registration.
Then you can swap the ordinary plate for your cherished one in the usual way.
There are, I believe, companies that will do all the paperwork for you, for a
fee, of course...

| 99% of my notes I sign "Scott", making it obvious that it's MR Hugs'n' Kisses.
I occasionally forget though...
Most people who would be interested know it's me anyway, and I'll identify
myself to the rest if asked.
Note that many node/user names don't identify the owner's sex (for all I know,
MitchellD could be a woman... ;-) and some don't identify the person at all
(user names like RKE and GKE spring to mind...).
Now, to save someone asking "who are you", I'll tell...
Scott Marshall.
That was exciting, wasn't it... ;-)

The only requirements for accounts are that the account must be used and
"owned" by one person, and that the account must be traceable to that one
person. What the account is called is irrelevant.
