Anybody got any ideas what this problem is? Since I've put the reconditioned radiator in the Marcos it's had a strange habit of getting warm (not hot, not in this weather!) before the engine feels warm and then dropping away (almost as if the thermo- stat wasn't working properly.) Also, the car seems to use a lot of water. I say seems to because, there's no water in the oil and no sign of any leak. Also, when warm, the radiator makes strange gurgling noises (like a bath emptying). Have I got an airlock? I will probably change the thermostat soon anyway, but do I need to look at doing anything else? Mark

Sounds like air in the system. I don't know the cooling system layout in the Marcos, but you might want to try squeezing the bottom rad hose to try and get the air out. The Westfield has a remote filler on the thermostat housing which results in the top of the rad being slightly above the filler neck. This causes no end of airlocks when trying to refill the system, and compressing the bottom hose is the only way to get the air out. It also takes about 45 mins to fill the system. If you have a heater fitted, this may be causing the air lock problem. Try disconnecting the return pipe from the heater matrix, open any flow control valves on the heater, and run the engine until no more air comes out. Dick |
