1261.0. "Luxurious hire car?" by SUBURB::BUNNT () Fri Oct 19 1990 17:54

     I'm thinking of hiring a car for a long weekend in November. There
    will be four of us who would like to travel to Penzance in comfort.
    Therefore, I spoke to Avis and asked them how much would there most
    luxurious car cost me for four days.

    I have a choice between a Granada 2.9 ghia/scorpio or a Rover 2.7sli
    which are both the same price i.e about 45 a day (inclusive of
    insurance).

    Which, in your opinion is the best car, in terms of comfort, mpg,
    speed, extras and space?

    Does anyone know if there is a cheaper scheme with a different
    company?

    Your opinion or experiance would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Tony

    If not cornering on the door handles, I would recomend the Grandad.
    Ride and comfort are good, but handling is not so hot. There is enough
    space in the back to have a dance. The Rover is less spacious but
    possibly better in the performance/handling department.

	I had a Rover 827 sli (whatever) for a week... it was brilliant,
	goes like stink, very comfortable, and *loads* of gadgets to
	play with. I actually thought of buying one until I found the
	"instant mpg" display on the computer... floor the throttle and
	the numbers go negative (well nearly)! Nice car though. The one
	I had was auto with the sport/economy switch so you could change
	the ratios depending what mood you were in.

1261.3Marginally cheaper car hireNOT003::LOWEYHas anyone told the customer yet?Fri Oct 19 1990 18:396
    I recall reading somewhere recently that Digital employees can get an
    extra n% discount (where n is a very small number) on car hire.

    May be worth following up, probably via Car Fleet help desk.

1261.4Rates for Hire CarsVIVIAN::M_ELLAWAYMon Oct 22 1990 08:566
    The rates for digital employees for Avis hire can be found
    in VTX under admin(option 30 I think, then under hotels and travel.
    This also lists the rates for Hertz but Avis is preferred.

         1-6 days hire 24.70

    Hertz:go up to group F

    p.s.re notes if for private hire the cdw(collision damage waver)

1261.6Swan National are cheaperWTHRDS::TOWERSMon Oct 22 1990 11:345
    Why not give Swan Nation/Euro Dollar a ring on 0734 352088. They are of
    the order of 20-30% cheaper than Avis/Hertz while still being fairly
    reputable.

Godfrey Davis has some really nice cars compared to Avis/Hertz/Swan/Whoever

Even a Lambo...... for #390 a day, all inclusive

Or a Rolls for less!

    AVIS have now told me that Digital discount can't be offered on
    the Rover 827, only the 820 (which is 44.50 per day).

    It transpires that the 827 costs about 116 per day!!

    Thanks for your replys...

    regards
    Tony (who now might reconsider)
1261.9Most comfy cars...UKCSSE::PARKERDTue Oct 23 1990 10:3215

    Have you considered a Citroen XM? I don't know if the hire companies
    have them but they are supposed to be very comfortable. I ran a BX for
    some years and in a straight line on the motorway there was nothing to
    beat it for ride.

    IMHO the choice is simple.

    	German Cars.......for drivers

    	French cars.......for passengers.

Have a nice weekend!

    If you do use AVIS you could be lucky and get an free upgrade

    "...sorry sir we havn't got the car you reserved but we do have a ..."

    This has happened to me on numerous occasions, most recently being when
    four of us hired a car to go to Munich for the weekend. We reserved an
    Opel Vectra saloon, and actually got an Opel Omega Estate.

Try Guy Salmon....... they're currently offering a "pay for 2 days, get another
day free" deal, and they do have some nice cars....

.. thay have some pretty nice prices, too, but the free day might make
it an attractive deal.

	Are you doing much driving around Cornwall, 'cause if you are, a big
	car will definately be a disadvantage.

    Unless, of course, it's a Land Rover - we had a great holiday touring
    Devon and Cornwall a couple of years ago. :-)
