Is it the AMG 560E or the Hammer you are on about if it is then it is a
300E with the engine bay modified to take the 5.6Litre Merc V8. The V8
is modified with a 32v head and produces some 330+bhp. Performance is
0-60MPH in 5 seconds (Automatic transmission) amd top speed 188MPH

| Thank's grant for your reply. All I know is that its the 580 SEL AMG its similar
in looks to the 600 SEL which is featured on the Fosters advert its a knew car
but looks quite dated. If it has similar peerformance to what you described
theres nothing old about it. Its definately a four door rather than the two door
560 SEC.
I've looked in loads of books on Mercedes and I cant find it in any of them I
know that the 600 SEL has started to be built again. It might be,that its a not
so poor relation to the 600 but I'm sure it wasnt a Limo which the 600 is.
Thanks again.

The old 600SEL used a old 6.9Litre (I think) V8 engine. The new
S-Class has as the top of the range model a 600SEL. The new 600SEL
uses a brand new Mercedes 6.0Litre 300BHP V12 and is related to the old
600SEL in name only.

| Order of things was:
1964(-ish): 600 introduced. New from ground up. The most massive "presence"
imaginable. 6.3 litre V8. Pitched as direct rival to Rolls Royce. Caused a
sensation. 1st car ever with central locking I think. Saloon version had 4
doors, 4 seats, not referred to as limo. Separate Lwb ("pullman") limousine
seemed to exist in several versions, eg 4d, 6d, landaulette, probably built
mainly to order. Don't know when MB stopped making the 600 - about '82?
1967-ish: 300SEL 6.3. The 600 engine dropped into the volume-selling MB
large saloon, previously available with 2.5 & 2.8 6 cylinder and 3.5 V8
engines. Real rocket ship.
1983? 450SEL 6.9. Same sort of thing - enlarged 6.9 litre version of the
600 engine dropped into the different-from-previous volume selling saloon
(the "S" series), previously available with 2.8 6 cylinder and 3.5 & 4.5
V8s. Again a real rocket ship but probably no faster than 300SEL 6.3 due
to extra weight. Safer though, because old swing-axle rear suspension no
longer used. The successor to this car was the still-current (just)
560SEL.
I think basically there have been just two V8 engine designs - the
3.5/3.8/*4.2/4.5/*5.0/*5.6 (* still current) fitted to various saloons and
SL sports cars, not to mention the current championship winning group C
sports racing cars, and the now defunct 6.3/6.9 for the 600 and aforesaid
rocket ships.
Wish I'd been there: - Innes Ireland (ex F1 driver) gave a demonstration
run of a 600 Pullman at an Oulton Park race meeting in the 60s and got
caught out by the swing axles suspension. He rolled it...

| Did the 300 SLR have a straight 6 or 8 engine? If it was an eight, what years
was it 'produced' and how many did they make?

would guess it used a wild version of the 6cyl ...
