One thing I have noticed in this part of the world (Thames Valley,
compared with the Midlands and Scotland where I have also lived) is
that the price of petrol doesn't seem to matter. For example, where
there is a garage such as Shell who always sell at the "full price"
very near or opposite another such as ICI whose prices are generally
cheaper by 5-10p, each is used as much as the other. Something else
I've never seen down here are queues at the pumps on Budget day.
IMHO, Tesco's in Chineham(?) Basingstoke seem to be cheapest in this
part of the world for unleaded. In general, the Midlands seems to be
10p cheaper than elsewhere in the UK.

| Asdas.....
Merthyr Tydfil
S. Wales ate the weekend....
4 star 1.86
unlead 1.76
No diesel
This is Esso petrol.....
There is also a petrol company local to South Wales called 'Action'
petrol....They used to purchase their petrol from Esso and BP and still
manage to sell it cheaper than the norm petrol prices. They now have
their own tankers and bid for thier petrol in some sort of
market....don't know much bout this tho.......
Their petrol prices are still about the same as the above
Other stations around the area are generaly 1.90-95 a gallon of 4star,
still much cheaper than around Thames valley.

| Most Ayr garages are similar in price:
4 star - 2:04p per gallon
Unleaded - 1:94p per gallon
Diesel - 1:90ish per gallon
Funny how the price is so expensive up here.

One explanation to an earlier point about the expensive Shell garage
being just as busy as the cheap ICI:
The vast majority of companies that supply company cars (in fact,
Digital is the only one that doesn't, as far as I know) also pay for
ALL petrol, private as well.
When I got my petrol paid for, I was more interested in the stamps
available than the price. Shell stamps are better than ICI's no
stamps.

re .6 - I thing this is a very good point - and one of the reasons why
petrol is cheaper further north - there are fewer company paid cars,
People are paying out of there own pockets, so _will_ go to the
cheaper places, so competition is in evidence.

What's wrong with Jet petrol?
The only cases I know of petrol being of an inferior quality were the
disasterous Formula Shell and a small BP garage outside Paris which
seemed to have muddled tractor fuel with their Super-Essence!

Ahhhhh, I understand,
I have to put my money in my pocket to buy a car, and the go-go-gone
juice.
What do I choose?
I choose a car with a Rover/Buick 3.5 V8, which can to 0-60 in
4.mumble seconds, does under 20 miles per gallon if you treat it
gently, and has a top speed in excess ( :-) ) of 70 mph.
It currently has no roll bar, or hard-top.
So 'cmon, les of the twaddle,I buy the car 'cause I like the way it
drives, and the way it looks, that's why it's my car.
Economy and sense has nothing to do with it (did I say that?)

I used to find that whenever I filled up with JET petrol,
fumes would make the interior of the car inhabitable for
a few miles, and that was with 3 different makes of car.
Also when I had a succession of Fords, I found that these
cars would be sluggish after filling up with certain brands.
I found Esso, Texaco and Amoco to be the petrol that gave
best acceleration, and I still use these brands in preference
to others such as Shell, BP, etc.
Has anyone else noticed this or is it just my imagination......

If you go to a fuel distribution depot you will see the Jet, Amoco, BP,
Shell, and all the other trucks filling from the same pipes.
The specification of the fuel is controlled by BS 7070. Sometimes an
additive may be added to the tanker fill, but after the Formula Shell
debacle this is less likely.
Over the weekend I saw a Jet tanker with the words "Why pay through the
nose" in large letters on its side.

Yes Richard, (well, I thought it was cheap, compared to up 'ere)
I got mine, last weekend, from the Sun Garage, just before Woolhampton
on the A4. It was 179.6 but I guess it may well be higher now. :-(

That might be so, but they don't sell diesel. :-(
