1163.0. "insurance for kit cars?" by SCOTMN::NEAL (Ann Neal - P&TG - DTN 833 4571) Tue Jul 24 1990 14:40

my other half and a friend have recently completed building a Westfield
7SE which they're going to race in the 750 club budget category -
... the hitch with this is that they need to insure the car - something
which is proving very difficult to do at a reasonable cost!

... does anyone have experience of insuring a kit car - third-party
will do (and not necessarily to cover the actual racing)???

    Thanks

    	Ann

P.S. I should add that one factor which is making this task EVEN more
difficult is the fact that both people concerned have "several" points
    on their licenses for speeding!

I've just moved my insurance, for the Marlin to Adrian Flux, it now
costs me 180 pounds full comprehensive with milage limited to 6000 per year.
I've done 14.5K in the last 3 years, so 6K seems like a reasonable limit. If
I am likely to exceed it, they will extend the cover for another 15%. The
cost includes 4 years no claims bonus and no claims protection. They can quote
instantly, try 0553 691266, for most popular kit types.

All of this was because I sat down for a rest at their stand in
Stoneleigh!

Dave

PS. As an interesting point, the quote wasn't affected by any bolt on extras,
but would have been affected by anything done to the engine itself, such
as a fast cam.

    thanks...

I've gone for them.... it cost 442 pounds in the end but that's
3rd party fire & theft for ANY driver over 25.

The problem with most of the other companies was that you could
only insure named drivers... and if they've any points on their
licenses then the premium is even higher.

Ann,
What is the spec of the westfield? A. Flux quoted me 571 for comprehensive
for a 170bhp Caterham 7, limited to 3000miles pa. Thats with zero ncb.

a so called specialist kit car insurer based in Cardiff quoted 2,200 for a
basic 84bhp Caterham 7 for comp. cover (they've gotta be joking)

i've read that insuring a car for racing is incredibly expensive, please let me
know how you get along

    Art...

    it's a westfield 7SE with a "pretty basic" mexico 1600 engine
... The engine was built by Arrow Engineering in Ferndown - it's
vastly improved performance but as far as actual modifications I
believe that the amount of tuning/mods you can make are restricted
becuase of the category they're going to race in - all the "bits"
(excuse my ignorance of things mechanical!) must have been valid
for a production model of that engine at some point.

I've got my 7SE insured with Adrian S Flux as well. They sorted out everything
over the phone, were more than helpful, especially when my previous insurer
started screwing around over the ncb proof, and only charged 160 fully comp,
7500 miles pa, 60%ncb, value 5200.

Dick

ps. perhaps we should start a Westfield sub club.

Another vote for a Kit Car conference. Although I dont contribute too
much it takes too long to scan CARS_UK for Kit bits.
