964.0. "Corvettes in the UK" by NSDC::WALKER (Gru von Bru) Mon Feb 19 1990 10:43

Hi,

A mate of mine is interested in obtaining a Corvette, late model.
Yes yes, why a Corvette etc. etc., don't ask me.

He is considering importing from the States but is not sure if this
is a good idea.

Are there dealers in Corvettes already in the UK that he can
talk to about it, or does he have to contact one directly
in the States.

Regards

John.

Well two things spring to mind.

Firstly, why doesn't he consider getting one from Europe (say Belgium).
I've seen Corvettes in 'normal'GM dealers there and he wouldn't
have to worry about a shipping charge (or possible damage in transit)
in this case as he could just nip over, pick it up and drive it
back. I don't know what costs are like in Europe though.

The other thing is that there are new and used dealers in American
cars in the UK. You don't say where he's based, but there's a dealer
of new american cars in Kingston Upon Thames (called something like
the American Car Centre). I've also heard that there's one in the
north of England as well. There's a used American dealer in Farnborough
(near where I live) and there are a number in London (including
some who will arrange purchase and import of cars from America,
have a look in Your Classic magazine, one of their staff bought
    a car in this way).

Prices of Vettes are HIGH in the UK, but some people just won't
    be told!

The on in Kingston _is_ called the American Car Centre, and there's another
one in Guildford, in Walnut Tree Close, past AFN, the Porsche main dealer
they seem to do a large selection of Yankees, tho' mainly stretch limo's ..

... I saw a 'G' registration shiny red corvette with what looked very
much like an OPEL badge on the front grille (makes sense I s'ppose..) in
    Henley yesterday.

Nice shape - unfortunately this model came complete with 6ft dipstick,
    self-perceived demi-god with Raybans.

Oh, no ideas where there are dealers tho'.

The ZR-1 is 55,000 but I am not sure how much a normal 'Vette is
    over here.

Seen in the local paper (Frankfurt) last weekend, a 84 vet for 36,000
DM (private). Belgium is not a bad place to look (US military in
NATO HQ) or even better is Germany (with thousands being sent home
in the near future). Being EEC importing will be a dodle.

Thanks for the info on the possible dealers and the hints
    on Belgium and Europe.

I guess it makes sense that with the current happenings in
East Europe, Corvettes could well be picked up at relatively
    cheaper prices shortly.
