916.0. "... is this widely known, or can I get a better deal elsewhere? ..." by CHEFS::CLEMENTSD (Public Sector and Telecomms) Tue Jan 09 1990 16:15

    Is it generally known that DEC employees get 30% discount on car
    insurance from Halfords Motor Services. Fully Comp includes windscreen
    cover, reductions for limited drivers and additional discounts for
    claimfree years.

    My own insurance details:

    Car:	1977 3.0L Granada GL Saloon Housed at a Newbury address
    and garaged daily.

    Basic Premium     	1053
    age of car 155.25- (15% as car over 10 yrs old)
    Scheme Discount 263.92-	(30% for DEC employee)
    owner and wife only 153.94-	(25% as two drivers both over 40)
    damage excess 34.64-	(pay first 50 of a claim)
    NCB		      	 277.70-	(65%)
    Loyalty 7.47-	(two claim free years goes up
    		      			by 2.5%/yr to max of 12.5%)

    Net Premium 142.07 (Fully Comp Cover)

    Net Premium		  79.00	(TPFT)

    I called today to check on afurther possible discount but the one
    thing not offered is a limited miles/yr discount.

    Sounds good, but on a 1977 car you can get limited mileage Classic
    car policies (crazy eh!) at even lower prices.

Could you point me in the direction of the companies offering this?

916.3.... where? ....CHEFS::CLEMENTSDPublic Sector and TelecommsWed Jan 10 1990 11:416
    Re the last two ....... I tried to get a limited mileage "Classic"
    policy from another pointer in this conferece and found the rate
    was higher than the Halfords one by a factor of TWO!

    My insurance needs to be paid by 20/01/90 so if there are any pointers
    please lets have them quickly!
916.4Try these - More help anyone?FOOT::SAXBYIsn't it 5.30 yet?Wed Jan 10 1990 11:5613

    My insurance is arranged with the Norwich Union, through Adrian
    S. Flux (0553 691266), but mine is for a 20+ year car, but they'd
    be worth calling anyway.

    Bain Clarkson may also be worth a call, but unfortunately I don't
    have their number.

    I have definitely seen classic insurance for 10 year old cars, but
    sadly I can't remember which company it was (as it was dearer than
    my 20 year + insurance, I didn't take a lot of notice).

916.5... not a goer ...CHEFS::CLEMENTSDPublic Sector and TelecommsFri Jan 12 1990 09:279
    Re -1

    I called Flux: they weren't interested in a 5000miles/yr limited
    policy; because the car was Gp 7 they wanted a mandatory excess
    of 250; didn't offer any NCB protection. Their quote finally came
    out at 180.

    Thanks for the info, but it looks like I'll be staying where I am
    unless anybody else can suggest anywhere else to try.

Try Bain Clarkson in Dudley (call directory enquiries for their number).

They offer all sorts of limited mileage policies for all cars, not just classics

916.9JUNO::WOODWereFrogs of DECpark unite !!!!!!!Wed Jul 25 1990 16:2612
      For future reference, the Brokers that I use are David Auden & Associates
in Hazel Grove, I found them to be cheaper than Adrian S. Flux, for a modified
MK2 Escort ('77) 1.3, insured with Norwich union, and didn't force me to have an
excess like Flux did at the quoted price (I payed 280 aged 19, with 2yrs NCB, an
accident against me and 3 points), and they do offer limited milage discounts.

      Despite this, it would nice to get quotes for my brother in a 1970 MK1
Escort from classic car specialists, so if you have the number, then could you
let me know ???

     re -.1

    	Has the insurance company changed it's telephone number recently. I
    tried to get a quote, but instead I got one of British Telecom's
    'polite' voices saying that I had dialled the wrong number.

916.12no problem....CHEFS::CLEMENTSDPublic Sector and TelecommsFri Oct 05 1990 13:061
    I just called Halfords on 0245 492949 and it worked OK...
916.13SIEVAX::JAMIEWhy's everyone else wrong all the time ?Tue Mar 05 1991 11:393
    Well I just got a quote from Halfords for 380 quid including the 30%
    digital discount. This doesn't compare very favourably with another
    quote we were given for 278!!!
916.14CHEFS::CLEMENTSDPublic Sector and TelecommsTue Mar 05 1991 11:577
    I saved money on my insurance by going through them. Perhaps your lower
    quote wasn't for the same level of cover?

    I have no financial interest in Halfords, but thought that the
    information was worth sharing with other people, so don't blame me, I'm
    only the messenger. It worked for me. What can I do if Halfords think
    that you're a bad risk..... ;-)
916.15FYI...RUTILE::BISHOPTue Mar 05 1991 12:315
    For your information:

    Halfords will not deal with young drivers with fast cars...

    That's what i was told anyway when i tried to get a quote...
916.16CHEFS::CLEMENTSDPublic Sector and TelecommsTue Mar 05 1991 12:372
    Ahh, the pain and unfairness of being young! Something we are ALL
    guilty of once in our lives.......
916.17Not the answer for everyone, thoughKERNEL::ROEThree Sixteen..Know what I mean John?Mon Nov 25 1991 16:4816
    Good information, but they volunteered that they weren't competitive
    for my enquiry - '87 Golf GTI, husband and spouse (both over 40), 65%
    NCD....net cost 369. As we've already had a quote from A-Plan in
    Basingstoke for 308, I'll keep looking!

    They've already been proven to be good value for others, so it really
    is a case of looking around, for everyone!

    BTW, can the moderator, or author, make the title relevant to an
    Insurance topic? I didn't find this note with /TITLE=INSURANCE, only by
    chance ploughing my way through the other insurance related notes.

    Thanks a lot!

    Mike
