774.0. "The state of the roads" by MINDER::GRAHAM (Graham Smith S.D.E.C.) Thu Sep 21 1989 15:05

I had the (mis)fortune to drive from Manchester to Ipswich and back,
    earlier this week.

I have travelled quite extensively on Motorways, major roads etc in this
country, but I cannot remember seeing what I saw this week.

On parts of the A1(M) in South Yorkshire, parts of the A1 towards
Cambridge and the A45 I noticed that there were definite "ruts",
just like a cart track on the inside lane. These had obviously been
caused by heavy lorries as the tracks were double, and too far apart
to have been caused by cars.

The stretches involved were not where the road had been repaired,
but were complete surfaces, if you see what I mean.

No doubt other people have noticed these. Is it the "hot" summer,
falling standard of road contruction or what ?

These "ruts" make changing lanes an even more hazardous manoever.

Also I noticed lots of "slippery road" signs. These were mentioned in
"The Independent" last week as being because the DoT tightened the
minimum friction standards for roads and many (if not all) authorities
could not or did not want to spend the money required to make them
safe. So they put up signs to try and cover themselves.

Since I had the misfortune to find a sharp edged pothole this morning,
I now need to replace an alloy wheel (see Integrale topic).

I would like to know if I can claim the cost of this damage from
the council in any way. Anyone out there know about this ?

Another thing, am I correct in assuming that a bent rim on an alloy
wheel cannot be straightened and used again ? At present, the wheelrim
is bent enough to let the tyre bead 'unseat' itself from the rim.

I had a road accident two years ago with my wife's Horizon, which is
equipped with KN's (the same as on the Caterhams)
The car almost was declared totall loss, because it's age, so I decided
not to have the dameged rim replaced. It all worked out fine.

The rim is damaged on the outerside, so the tyre itself still fits as
    normal.

I think you can claim from the council - there is a note in READING
about holes in the road and it has the info in it.

Any chance of a pointer ?

What I intend to do is take a couple of photo's of the road and the
offending hole, plus the damaged wheel rim. I will then send these
with an explanatory letter, plus copies of receipts for new wheel and
tyre (allowing for 'wear and tear' on the cost of the tyre).

    Lisa,

The note in READING is 619.

Thanks - although I didn't know 'where' the READING conference was
    (found it via EASYNET_CONFERENCES now).

In my case, the 'ole was in the Liss (Petersfield) area, so I hope that
the local council there will consider my claim...

I believe you can claim from the council if the hole is more than 3/4 inch deep.

I believe you can claim from the council if the hole is more than 3/4 inch deep.

This one was about 2 inches deep (but not very wide or long).

I went back this weekend to take photo's, it actually comprised two
holes - one straight after the other. Considering that the hole(s)
are quite small, they made a hell of a bang.

'Feel' of the car is not the same now either, so I will have to put
the car into the dealer's for a 'geometry check'. As the suspension
is adjustable in most (or all ?) directions, this is a slow job.

That means it takes longer and therefore costs more...

Wonder if I can get the money for that as well (perhaps if the dealer
    can quote before-and-after dimensions) ?
