667.0. "Peugeot 309 GTi 16" by NCEIS1::CHEVAUX () Tue Jul 04 1989 16:08
Peugeot just announced a very hot 309.
They have mounted the engine of the 405 Mi 16 into the 309. Car
will be called 309 GTi 16. Usual modifications are made to the
suspension, etc to cope with the extra power and speed.
In addition Peugeot have decided to make the 309 a member of the
Peugeot family by giving it a Peugeot bonnet, boot, etc. You may
remember that the 309 was really born as a Talbot (at the time they
dropped Talbot ...!) and has always been considered as a stranger
(x09 numbering, ...)
Anyway this car will be available in about 6 months from now (Dec-Jan)
It weighs under 1000kg, so with 160hp it should be interesting to
compare it with other GTi's. Road test mentionned pretty good handling
(similar to 205 GTi). Price around FF 135000.
If anyone interested I can find more info on the subject.

667.28 | RHD is the problem. | CURRNT::SAXBY | Isn't it 5.30 yet? | Wed Jan 03 1990 16:47 | 8 |

Autocar cite engineering difficulties in converting the 309 GTI
16 valve to RHD as the reason for its delayed arrival in the UK.
No doubt they'll sort it out eventually, but hopefully in a better
way than BMW have in the past.
