320.0. "Roof rack loans & purchases" by RDGENG::BUDD () Thu Sep 22 1988 13:34

    Does anybody know of an alternative to the Vauxhall supplied roof rack
    for the current Astra? ie one that fits into the special slots in the
    roof as there is no gutter for attaching the normal style of rack.

    The standard Vauxhall price is something like 47 for the two rails
    only, and if you want the "rack" that clips onto the rails, that's
    another 25!

can someone lend me one for a week (1st week in March)?

Thanks,

    I've got a set of roof bars for the 405, which, with a little ingenuity
    and the lateral bars from a cycle carrier, can be readily made to hold
    suitcases.

    Drop me a mail or give me a call, and we'll Come To Some Arrangement.

    Paul,

    I have 2 spare sets of bars, one is a Thule that will fit any gutterred
    roofrack, another is a make whose name I can't remember, but they were
    purchased to fit a gutterless Astra and also a guttered Cavalier.

    Both are lockable.

    If you think they will fit let me know. I'm in Leeds, but am travelling
    to Welwyn on Wednesday.

320.31Roofrack for Renault 19 (3-door)KERNEL::EVERESTAYep....like the mountain!!!Tue Apr 20 1993 14:4821

    Hi,

    I've had a look around and have not found a note dealing with this
    topic so here it is.

    Has anybody bought a roof-rack for a 3 door Renault 19 recently
    (incidently mines a 16v)?
    I went to Herds Basingstoke who quoted 70-ish + VAT for Renault, and 35
    for a after-market set that did look a bit flimsy.
    Down at Halfords they have some Thule kits, these look good, more
    braces, but cost, looks like about 100 quid for the full kit.
    On top of any of the prices mentioned I'll have to shelve out for
    special cycle carriers as well...

    Any of you people have any advice, or experience of these or other
    roofracks?

    Ta,

    Ade.
320.32UPROAR::EVANSGGwyn Evans @ IME - Open DECtrade -> DTN 769-8108Tue Apr 20 1993 17:503
	Well, Thule have a good reputation and have the various add-ons
   (including lockable attaching points & cycle carriers) so it probably
   boils down to getting what you pay for...
320.33 TRUCKS::BEATON_SI Just Look InnocentTue Apr 20 1993 19:1213
    If you are going to buy from Halfords... Make sure it's the Thule type.

    I made the big mistake of buying another (cheaper) manufacturer's
    offering from Halfords and lived to regret it... The tale is told
    elsewhere in this conference somewhere.

    The gist is I thought the extra cost of the Peugeot roof bars (I drive
    a Peugeot) was worth the extra piece of mind.

    Reargards,

320.34MIMS::HOOD_RTue Apr 20 1993 20:337

    Check the GOOFOF::BICYCLE notes conference. I have Yakima
    racks, but Thule racks are fine. A set of used Thule racks generally
    goes for about half the price of new (so you may want to consider
    looking for a set of used racks unless you need them immediately).

Ade,

  I have used a pair of Automaxi Universal 3 bars on my 5dr 19 TSE for the last
3 years. VERY nice but I do not know if it will fit a 3dr model.

  Ask nicely and I will bring it in and let you try it.. :-)

320.36Vauxhall roof rack anyone?WIZZER::FISCHERI can always sleep standing upWed May 19 1993 13:0512
Can anyone lend me a roof rack for a Vauxhall for a
day or two? I have a Calibra so I believe it should take
the standard roof rack that attaches to the built in rails.

I am in the Basingstoke area.

Contact me on 7833 3224 or by mail to the above.

320.39Mini roof-rack loan for someone in Basingstoke!COMICS::SUMMERFIELDTerminally Flirty!!Wed Jun 09 1993 17:1212

I've come to the conclusion that slapping a roof-rack on
my Mini is gonna be a helluva lot cheaper than hiring
a transit van (noooo cheap cracks, thankyou!!) to move
my big stuff... and borrowing one would be even cheaper
than buying one!!!

Has anybody got one I could borrow from the 11th to 16th

    Julie,

    What age Renault 19 is it? Do you need a gutter or gutterless roofrack?

    Thule do a standard gutterless bar which you then buy the attachment
    for the car you need.

    I know somewhere selling them cheap(er) at the moment.

320.52Nissan Primera Roof-Rack ??WOTVAX::MACDONALDIStalybridge CelticMon Aug 02 1993 19:2116

    Can someone tell me if you can get roof-racks for a nissan primera.

    We are going on holiday in a few weeks, and coming home from France
    picking up the odd bottle or so thought I could load the roof-rack.

    However upon investigation I notice there is nothing for a standard
    roof-rack to clip onto....

    Any pointers... is there a special one or not one at all

320.53Cheaper to buy bottles in the UK...PFENIG::DRAPERTue Aug 03 1993 10:3819
    Mac,
    	Only some indirect hints, I'm afraid.

    	My SAAB is gutterless (like the Primera). You can only see the roof
    rack mounting points by opening the doors and pulling down on the
    rubber door frame seals. Maybe yours is the same - or maybe a glance at
    the owner's manual might help.

    	Roof racks for the SAAB tend to be expensive. I don't know if this
    is a trait seen with all gutterless racks, buts SAAB's own roof rack is
    around 130.00, and ones by independant suppliers (with appropriate
    fitting kit) seem to come in at over 100.00

    	However, with this wonderful new car scheme, the good news is that
    we'll all be able to afford roof racks. Its just a pity that we won't
    be able to afford the cars to go with them - but that's another story.

    The Thule racks aren't cheap but they are VERY good. There's a company
    doing specials at the moment, I got my bike add-ons from them, price
    guide:

    79.95 for gutterless car, the offer had them at 69.95.

    If you swop your car you just buy the clamp on kit for the new car.
