These are what I would expect - although I would only have been
able to name one of them as definitely being transverse engined

I guess that these mid-engined vehicles are the sort of thing that

It seems an unusual configuration to me.

A good question Mark. I mentioned this earlier but received no replies.
Last year I had a puncture on a perfectly good rear tyre. At the time
my other half had the car and drove 5 miles on a flat tyre. After she
completed her journey she inspected the tyres and noticed that one of the
tyres was ripped to shreds. Later she told me that she thought the car
handled strangely !
Anyway after swapping it for the spare I nipped down to the friendly
ATS people, they looked at the tyre, smiled, I gave them my prime card,
they phoned Hertz, replaced the tyre and everyone was happy.
I've no idea what the situation is these days. It depends if you call a
puncture "driver abuse" ?
What are other lease car drivers experiences with punctures ?

I know the make of car that started with 3 wheels and then went to 4
the Morgan, it had a boat like body with 1 wheel at the back, a front
mounted engine which drove the 2 front wheels. Bugatti may have also
had a similar arrangement.
Production cars with larger front tyres than rear: quite a few of the
front wheel drive tarmac AND grass/mud rallye cars have used this set
up. Non production ?? nah! they all seem to produce loads of BHP and
bent panels..... :-).
cars with 6 gears: most modern cars these days 5 forward and 1 reverse.

I don't think there were any straight 12's or 16's produced. Lots of companies
had V-12's and a few had V16's, but I think the straight 8 was the longest (in
cylinders) that was used.

Was this engine a derivative of an engine for a road car or a special military
design? When did R-R stop making this engine?
Thanks for the replies!

my guess is that the engine's a derivitive of one used in civilian vehicles,
as, at that time, the Army had a tendancy to buy engines `off the shelf', so
to speak, rather than have new ones developed.
I can't say how long this particular engine was in production, as my source
of reference is pretty old (1962!); the vehicle itself saw many years
service, but I suspect that the powerplant and transmission may have been
revised several times.

| All this recent talk of engine designs reminds me of another curio I've
heard of occasionally, the opposing piston design. This engine has two
pistons per cylinder, with the valve apparatus in the middle of it, driving
crankshafts at either side of the engine block. The most extreme example
I know of (or at least have heard about) is the unit used in some diesel
locomotives, which consists of three of these units arranged in a triangle
driving common crankshafts at each corner. Does anyone know the origin
of this design, and whether it has any particular advantages over more
`traditional' designs, or was it just a novelty idea created on the whim
of some nutty designer?

| I believe the original ISO design for the Isetta engine used this type - 1
cylinder and two pistons. I don't know what advantages they were supposed to
have, maybe just a long flat engine?
I'm still intrigued by the radial vs rotary airplane engines....

wasn't the rotary one supposed to provide superior cooling? Not
that I imagine it would be needed at a couple of hundred MPH in
the air, but it certainly provided a hefty flywheel arrangement
(not to mention a nightmarish fuel induction system!)

| Hi,
The opposing piston engne was also produced in a 6 cylinder 12 piston
multi fuel version and fitten to Cheiftan tanks, I think it was 12 or
16 Litre. The fun used to be when the big ends wore and the engine was
revved resulting in two of the pistons meeting in the middle then
exiting rapidly out of the side of the engine.
The pistons from this engine are about 3" diameter by 9" high with
concave tops and make excellent ash trays (nobody kicks them over at
parties especially if the steel 1.5" dia gudgeon pin is left in)
