I heard yesterday that Thames Vally Police have just taken on a bunch
of new Astra 1.4i's (standard) and totally rebuilt them with 2.7i
engines (they couldn't get the bonnet down on 3.0i's).
From the outside, they are identical to the standard ones.

Have they also fitted two reverse gears ?

I very much doubt that they would fit 2.7 engines, they currently don't make a 2.7
engine... Only 2.0,2.6,3.0 or 3.6! The straight six engine just would not fit
to a transverse mount in an Astra.
The only option that I would believe is the new V6 which is being made at Ellesmere
Port, although I do not know what cc it is packing.

May be its me, but why would they want to put a large engine in a
standard car?

| This is either one of those stories that surfaces every so often and
has not a grain of truth in it or it is a wicked waste of money.
The police up here use Astra GSis. What would be gained by the TVP
hare-brained scheme?

| I have known at least two police officers who would liberally spread such
stories simply to put the frightners on the more irresponsible drivers.
If you believe everything you hear, then I know of .....

I know of one ex-officer who used to tell the real story
about some of these "specials", they do exist.

The idea of a 2.7 litre V6 Astra isn't that odd (although at first my
thought was much as John expressed). After all there is a new V6 coming
from GM AND VW have a V6 Golf. Maybe there's more to this than meets
the eye?

The GM V6 - to be found first in the facelifted Cavalier will be a
2.5l lump.

| What follows is FACT, I was there!!
I was visiting my friends. He lived next door to the Police station in
Crowthorne. We had been doing some work on his motorcycle on the drive
which overlooks the police car park.
The Police were having difficulty in starting an Escort MKII van. My
friend and I helped the Police to try and bump start the van. This
failed and we pushed the van back into the car park.
The Police then opened the bonnet, it had been concealing a Lotus Twin
Cam engine. The van had a badge on the rear denoting that it was a
1.1L , and it also had the standard 155 tyres.
The Police DO have modified cars.
Cheers Ian...

| Surely theres more to increasing the performance of a car than whacking
a big lump under the bonnet.
Uprated suspension and most important - what about the brakes ?

| Many forces have 'low-profile' cars provided by the manufacturers
(Ford, etc) as the forces have such high annual mileages and thus can
provide high-mileage testing for new models/engines.

| So, the Police use vehicles which would be classified as dangerous
if put together by a private individual and subsequently checked
over by an automotive engineer ?
If they have still got 'standard' 155 section tyres, I don't suppose
that there is any point in uprating brakes or suspension as the tyres
would not be able to cope.
Question on the engine :
Was it a recent type of Lotus (2.0 or 2.2 litre ?) engine
or was it the old Cortina-type of lesser capacity (+ reliability) ?
Although I can see why they may wish to have uprated engines in their
vehicles I cannot see the point in this particular 'Q-car' (or Q-van)...

| When I was looking for a car about 5 years ago, I went to an accident repair
insurance write-off specialist (I'm a cheapskate, who likes to buy his car
'appliances' as cheaply as possible). On his jig he had a written-off
ex-Police Escort Mk II (early '80s model) which he offered to sell me.
The major problem for me was the insurance - a turbo Janspeed engine wasn't
going to be cheap to keep on the road!
