		FORMULA ONE CHALLENGE - 1988

For the last two years, I have coordinated a competition with some of
my colleagues who are similarly interested in Formula One motor racing.

The idea has been to :

	- chip in #10 (ten pounds sterling) or equivalent into a "pot"
	- predict the outcome of the World Drivers Championship
	- predict the outcome of the Constructors Championship
	- predict the driver who will win most Grandes Prix during the season
	- share out the "pot" at the end of the season

I keep you all informed of developments (time permitting) gleaned from
my weekly motoring newspaper and produce results and points sheets after every
G.P.

The winner last year was my ex-boss' wife from Valbonne who walked off
with FF700 for her FF100 stake!!

If you are interested in participating next year, please mail me with
your node, location and DTN. I will create a distribution list and issue the
rules at some point well before the first race gets under way in April.

Regards,
	Colin

I know this an old topic, but this is an old question......

I've been trying to think of the name of the then up-and-coming
Scottish racing driver who everyone thought was destined for Formula 1.
I think he even got a test drive.......

This was a few years ago (5 or 6 I think).

I kept thinking it was Johnny Herbert, but he turns out to be an
Essex-man, so was it Johnny someone else?

    Anyone help?

DAVID COULTARD, I think thats right , drives for Paul Stewart, was
either winner or runner up in the F3 championship last year.

As for Dumfires Mr Wegg, he's hardly up and coming. Maybe down and
going. He was very good at spinning off and the highlight of his
career was to be in the winning Jaguar at Le Mans in 1988.

Thanks you two, it was Dumfries I was thinking of. Didn't he drive a
    F1 Lotus in a test?

Sorry Mr Wegg, I re- read the .7 . Johnny dumbfires did drive for Lotus
for 1 season back in the days when they had a Renualt engine and JPS
sponsorship , I think he may have been number 2 to Senna. He later
drove for Silk Cut Jaguar, team tom's Toyota, and maybe a one off for a
Porsche team. Imo he was not the worlds best driver, particularly in
sportscars, but he was damed good at stuffing them in a big way, or
just plan spinning off. I seem to remember he was also a dab hand at
fixing rear suspension with a pair of pliers.

I think he maybe in early retirement these days.

Dumfries also had a one off drive for Sauber-Mercedes, I believe, at
    Le Mans.

    	Apologies accepted, Mr. C!!

Didn't he also have a title? (I mean an inherited one, I know he
    	never won any!)

He had an inherited title (something about Dumfries and Galloway, I
think), but didn't he win the British F3 championship one year?

From what I saw of his driving at Le Mans a few years back, he should
stick to being The Earl ... he turned the corners just before the main
grandstand (don't remember the name) into a straight. Luckily the Jag
survived ...

In 1989 when driving the TAKAQ toyota he very comprehensivley smashed
the car. He stuffed it somewhere about the porsche curves or wherever,
worked on the rear end for some time . He then drove it to the slip
road opposite the pit lane. Was filmed trying to repair either the
upper rear wishbone or a CV with a pair or pliers . After a long time
gave up and tried to drive it to the pits, the story then took a very
swift twist and changed the fortunes of the cameraman. A lead from his
camera got stuck in the car door or somewhere, as "The Earl" drove ( or
more to the point limped) away, the camera was swiftly removed from the
cameramans shoulder and dragged along the ground. Every last bit was
televised. During the 1988 Dumbo span the car off in a large number of
the races. I can't claimed to have followed his carrer to closly but
there are only 3 things I can think of that he did.

    1. Set the fastest lap to date at Le Mans, during the 1987 race in the
    Sauber Mercedes.

    2. Was a member of the winning team in 1988 for jaguar.

    3. Threw away umpteen races due to a spin.

23.19Alan McNish??JUNO::JUPPThu Jul 23 1992 18:215
Could the driver originally referred to be Alan McNish?. He currently
does alot of testing for Mclarren. I also thick he was F3 champion a
    couple of years ago.

    Cheers Ian...

Dumfries was the driver who was acceptable to Senna as a team-mate when
    he vetoed Warwick.

Note 1205.0 Melbourne to host Australian Formula One Grand Prix No replies
MEOC02::CASEY "MEO78B::CASEY ..in truth!"            38 lines  18-DEC-1993 10:53
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To quote the Melbourne "The Age" of 18-DEC-1993..

"What a coup! Big Race is ours

Victoria has snatched the Australian Formula One Grand Prix from
Adelaide in a $60 million deal kept secret until the last minute.

After 12 months of confidential negotiations, a triumphant Premier, Mr.
Kennett, yesterday announced that it was the most exciting thing that
had happened in the 14 months he was elected.

The race, which will be run around Albert Park Lake, will be held from
1997 for at least 5 years. Grand Prix week - probably in late March -
will include a yacht race and a boat race on the lake, a classic-car
re-enactment of the 1958 Melbourne Grand Prix and a VIP car race.

Organisers say it will bring big benefits, including 1,000 jobs, a $50
million-a-year boost to the economy and up to 500,000 tourists.

In a deal that has been kept secret since it was signed three months
ago, Melbourne fought off challenges from China and Malaysia. Adelaide,
which has hosted the race since 1985, learnt of its loss only
yesterday. The new South Australian Premier, Mr. Dean Brown, said he
was `shattered', but Melbourne had a watertight contract."

                                  *****

Now, what the aforegoing does NOT tell you is that there is this big
glass tower which currently overlooks the entire Albert Park circuit,
providing a completely unobstructed view, and that building happens to
be Digital MEO. I wonder what the organisers will do to ruin our grandstand
    view of the proceedings??
