Tripods do have the same fitting a still camera, but I would recommend
a much larger more robust model. Camcorders using the VHS or VHS 'C'
tend to be heavier unless you manage to borrow one of the newer 8mm
types.

This is as good a place as any.
Has anyone actually driven up to AYR ? How far is it and
what route is recommended ? How long does it take if one
is strictly adhering to speed limits et cetera ?
I could probably estimate this for myself but my atlas is in
the car and I can't be bothered to go and get it. Besides
I thought the response would be quicker here.
Cheers,

Last time I tried Autoroute it couldn't find the way from Tavistock to
Exeter. About 2 roads and 30 miles. Also Grantham was missing from the
earlier versions. It is not sure if the reason was a political dig
(birthplace of Mrs. Thatcher). But seeing as how the authors were
recent Oxford graduates this is unlikely.

5.420 | Looking for a hard top | FORTY2::HOWARD | BIG FUN rolled into one | Thu Aug 13 1992 17:28 | 17 |
| Hi all,
I have a Spitfire 1500 (British Racing Green) and would like to get
hold of a hard top for it. I dont mind whether the top is not coloured
(ie primered) so that I can spray it myself.
I have inquired at my suppliers and they all cost about 200 (too
expensive).
I have also asked at Spit Bits and they have some second hand ones that
I may be interested in (cos they're cheaper).
I just thought it was a good idea to put a note in here as well just in
case anyone has one they want to sell.

If so would that kind sole be prepared to pick me up from Fleet

Would you be able to take me back to Fleet after work ?
Around 8:30 ish Tuesday AM (tomorrow) would be ideal.
My situation is this. I have to take my car to an Alfa specialist
based in Fleet. The work he is doing on the car means that it will
be there all day. I can't really stick around hence my request.

Wanted :
Source/name of supplier etc of add-on trip computer for a car.
I'm mainly interested in some sort of gadget that'll measure fuel flow
and road speed and tell me my MPG. Apparently Sparkrite used to sell
them, but I've not seen any in shops.
Also : I'm after the sticky plastic stuff that a number of decals are
made of that are stuck on cars. ie the black plastic stuff that's
often stuck on door pillars around the windows these days. It's very
much like Fablon/Blue Peter sticky backed plastic, but I'd imagine the
adhesive is different. In my experience Fablon goes all tacky after a
few years, especially when warm. I want to cut my own decals you
see...

I've just purchased a PUG 405GTDT with 120K miles on it

watching out for or tips etc...Anybody got a similar Pug with
similar milage ??. Any info on economy / performance bearing in

I've received 6 months parts and labour so if something is
going to go wrong I'd like it to happen in the first six
months.

I would have liked another Fiesta having had the XR2i previously. The

that defeats the object. 'Sides, I really should be looking at bigger

Seems the latest in casual car crime is to nick the spare wheel from cars
which stow them in a 'basket' below the car. e.g Pug 205
One ex-BT employee has used his redundancy money to design and market a lock
for these type of carriers after he had first-hand experience of the crime
(ever helpful Daily Torygraph didn't publish any details about how you contact
him for this !!!).
Other suggestions were cycle padlocks.

Unfortunately the Inkpen branch of the Morris Minor Centre is no more.
That's where I bought mine. It was 1500 + 200 for the unleaded
conversion, which was fairly expensive but they did a lot of work on it
for nothing over the first few months. The Bath number for the Morris
Minor Centre is 0225-315449. I assume they still sell them from there.
An alternative is the Morris Minor Clinic in the old brickworks on the
Meadway between Reading and Tilehurst. They are good for repairs
(although pretty disorganised) and they do have the odd car for sale.
They're on 0734-572283.
There are other places which I don't remember the names of, but none in
the immediate area. I've got a magazine at home that lists a few.
I've just sent off my subscription to the Morris Minor Club. I'll let
you know if I see any local adverts in their magazine (remind me though).
As is usually the case, buying privately gets the best bargains, if you
know what to watch out for.

Best advise would be to check the adverts at the back of the likes of

resonable prices, can't remember off hand - don't have Autocar to hand.
Good luck with your search though - it's fine car - I like mine.

5.559 | Suction Cup Roof Rack | RDGE44::ALEUC1 | Barry Gates, 7830-1155 | Wed Jun 15 1994 15:38 | 12 |
| You could try those suction type roof racks. I saw one in Makro
(Reading) for about 20. The suction cups are operated by a
lever so they would attach firmly. I think the instructions said to use
only on smooth paintwork and to re-attach every 8 hours.
There are no bars involved; each suction cup has a loop and luggage
straps were included. There were 4 suction cups. I suppose the
advantage is that when you arrive you can take off the "rack" and put
it in the boot.
Good luck,
Barry.

5.573 | | ERMTRD::BURKE | Loose chippings on the info highway | Wed Jul 13 1994 12:56 | 15 |
| Word of warning on roof bars.
If your car has no roof gutter, like my Renault 19, you may find (like
I did) that you have to buy a conversion kit to fit the bars to the
roof sills.
Consequently, Halfords (Basingstoke) quoted 49.95 for the bars then
another 20.00 for the conversion kit.
It was therefore cheaper for me to go to Renault and buy their own
brand at 55.00 a throw.
Helpfully yours,
Gav.

5.574 | Beware cheap imitations! | FAILTE::BURNETTD | I have a cunning plan! | Wed Jul 13 1994 16:32 | 10 |
| I bought THULE bars which fit both of my estates. 505 and Tempra. I was
using a cheapo halfords rack which fitted over the 505 roof rails onto
the gutters, but after a few trips with the boat on the roof, the bars
now have a strange boat shaped dent in them.
The Thule ones weigh about three times as much and don't bend, so
beware cheapo racks if you're lugging anything heavy!

5.583 | Car with Tow-Hook? | GRUMBL::keane | hello | Tue Oct 11 1994 16:01 | 20 |
| Hi,
Is there any kind person in Reading, Basingstoke or Newbury area, who has a
large car with a towing bracket, that they will lend, (hire?) me, for a
couple of hours during office hours.
The reason is that my son has just finished building a kit car. He has
legally driven it to the MOT station and had it mot'd, (it passed!). We now
have to take the car from Silchester to Reading to have it inspected for
serial numbers by the vehicle registration dept. in Minster Street. The
officials there, are insisting that the vehicle MUST be taken to them on a
trailer and not driven! There is a mobile examiner, but he covers the
whole of the south and it will be weeks before he can get to us!
WE have the use of a car trailer, but no prime mover!.
We have taken 11 months to build this kit, and this is the last hurdle to
be overcome, please can you help!

You can hire snow chains from the RAC and probably the AA, and maybe your
dealer. Shops such as Les Smiths & Halfords sell them. They are not terribly
expensive.

That old excuse eh? Well dyslexia doesn't make you fail to see the
difference between "your" and "you're"; crap education and laziness
does, mostly the latter.
Let me add something else that might help you overcome your problem.
You're just starting on your career in the world, and unlike when I
started, there are millions of young people out of work, competing for
what few jobs there are. If I, as a recruiter, received a letter/CV
written in as appalling English as your earlier note, it would go
straight in the bin. Hilarious, isn't it?

I agree with your point and wholeheartedly applaud your sense
of vision and correctness for pulling a man up about his diction whilst
he was merely entering a note in here with the misguided impression
someone will actually give him some help.
Here are two options for
the visionary noter:
A - Take a day off, you deserve it.
B - Give yourself a hearty slap on the back. Preferably hard enough to
induce a blood clot.
Maybe you should consider the man's circumstances prior to being so
judgemental and seriously funny.

| Most local Tool-Hire shops have what you are looking for. I hired one
to install an engine and gearbox in my Caterham. The crane was in
pieces which fit in the boot of a car. I found it was easy to use and
accurately position the engine , effortlessly.
It wasnt expensive to hire and the longer you have it the cheaper the
daily rate.
Another useful "tool" are engine stands to bolt onto your engine when
it is out of the car.

| I'm want to buy or "borrow" (for a fee?) a roof rail kit for taking
bicycles on an Omega Estate.
Any available?

| I have one in Leeds, well Harrogate. I don't have any plans to be down
south in the near future. Bikes mount upside down, which doesn't seem
as secure as upright.
Andrew
PS mine is Automaxi, there is nothing special about Omega bars, any
rack for bars would do the job. It's not like others where you need
gutters/bolts or whatever to fit.

| A40 from Oxford to Brecon. Well, actually I think you have to turn off
the A40 just outside Brecon as the A40 now bypasses the town, but
basically just follow the A40 all the way. It's a very nice drive, much
better than hacking along motorways.
