can't remember the title and Tom Petty is the only one I can

    I have a vague memory of seeing a movie, a few years ago, where Neil
    Young had a cameo appearance.  I think he played a rotten, criminal,
    druggy-type, ex-boyfriend of one of the main characters.  I seem to
    recall him coming to the door to see her and her new boyfriend scares
    him off.  I thought it was funny at the time, but now I can't think of
    what the movie was.....and it's driving me *crazy*!!  :-)
    
    Can anyone else remember this?  (or did I really dream it?)  :-)

    become an actor....well, I think Levon Helm has done a fine job in the
    roles he's played on the screen, and ya gotta still love The Band.

Yep.  Steven Tyler was in it, too.  What an incredibly bad movie.  Perfect
for its period in time.

    Meatloaf has several other credits, as well.  Wasn't he in "Defending
    Your Life?"  "Wayne's World" along with Alice Cooper, "Leap Of Faith,"
    and others.  Did quite well, I thought.

    Meatloaf also had a small part in "Leap of Faith" last year with Debra
    Winger and Steve Martin.  He played a truck driver.

He's only in one scene ... part of a crowd that Brian is pushing thru
to escape the Roman guards.  Just before he (George) gets pushed off-screen
by the crowd, you hear him say "hello" in a heavy Liverpool accent ...

Oh dear lord ... I'm going to gag.  

Well, the movie I was trying to recall starred Timothy Hutton and 
Kelly Mcgillis as two people who meet and fall in love in heaven.
McGillis gets sent back and Hutton managed to convince God to 
send him back to find her. Problem is, he'll have absolutely no 
memory of her and must meet her by his 21 birthday. Hutton plays 
a trumpet. Wish I could remember the name. Petty played a gambler 
in a bar scene.

    it's a cultural thing.  Maybe a person has to have grown up in the US
    in the 50's and '60's and be steeped in pop culture to find John Waters
    movies funny?  I don't know.

It's probably not possible to "get" a John Waters movie without being
familiar with the American culture that it spoofs.

    Living Colour's lead singer Cory (Corey?, forgothislastname) was in 
    "Platoon" before he was a rock star.  Also, just FYI, he was in that 
    annoying join-the-army TV commercial ("what do you want to be when 
    you grow up?"  "i don't know, what do _you_ want to be when you grow 
    up" as they gobble hamburgers in a diner).  Didn't have the hair and 
    spandex in that spot.

    There was a movie that was made about 10 years ago (I think) called
    Roadie with Meatloaf, Roy Orbinson and others in tribute to all the
    roadies.  I don't know if it was ever released or not.  Has anyone
    ever seen it or heard about it.
    
    I want to see it because an old friend of mine was in it.  Have lost
    touch with the friend but would still like to see the movie.

    If you spent any time in the Baltimore area in the 50's/60's
    you'd have a better understanding of John Waters. Art really
    imitates life in some aspects of his work. Having relatives
    in Baltimore and spending a fair amount of time there I can
    say that I can really relate to his work. ;-)

    Art imitates life, eh?
    
    Those who can duplicate past successes get the recording contracts.
    Those who go out on a limb (and I thought Vai's playing in that duel
    was really "out there") are the losers.
    
    Macchio wins the contest for playing an uninspired version of a
    non-original classical guitar piece on electric (and a sloppy version
    at that).
    
    Vai loses because he can't copy the copy.
    
    OK, Karen,  it's just a movie, it's just a movie,...
    
    However, I think we can criticize the movie for flagrant flaws like
    this.
    
    Actually it reminds me of another movie called "Side Out" which was
    about beach volleyball.  The movie ends with the protagonist playing
    the "Kings of the Beach".  The kings of the beach were not actors, but
    the actual "kings of the beach" at the time.
    
    To make a long story short, on the critical final point, they show the
    protagonist sorta "fake" like he's going to hit it over the net
    but actually setting up his partner who kills the ball and they win.
    
    Fine... except for one thing, the "fake and then pass" was an
    absolutely clearly illegal hit ("double contact" because he passes the
    ball from one hand to the other) that would have been called at EVERY
    tournament I've ever been too or played.  
    
    To make matters worse, in case any viewer would have any doubt they decide
    to show it as a close-up in slow motion.  You could use this as a
    training film for refs ("this... is a fine example of a double
    contact").
    
    The other funny thing about it is that they show King of the Beach
    Randy Stoklos kicking the sand as in "damn, I lost" whereas in real
    life Randy (a frequent ref abuser) would be on the head referee so fast
    (for not calling it) that he wouldn't even have time for a breath.
    
    I've meant Randy Stoklos a bunch of times and I keep meaning to ask
    him how in god's name a film which listed so many pro's in the
    "technical advise" credit could have let the film go out like that.
    
    OK, it's just a movie, it's just a movie,...

    BTW, if there are any real bluesmen (or blueswomen) that can explain
    the origin of the term "cuttin' heads", I'd like to hear it!

    Vai still won on that count.  
    
    I think Vai's attempts to mimic/embellish what the kid did were far
    more impressive than the kids meager attempts to do what Vai did.

    It reminded me of a typical teenage guitarist trying to solo over

    "Illogical" yes, but as a poor guy who often plays in crappy little
    clubs, I'd LOVE to see it become a reality.  ;-)
    
    I once did get to play a nice Steinway at a wedding and it was a real
    trip.  Playing a world-class piano like a Steinway or a Bosendoerfer
    is a massive "high" for me to which few others compare.  I lose track
    of reality and just get absorbed into playing.  Can't count the number
    of hours I've made friends and relatives wait for me to finish getting
    my "fix" at the Steinway, Bosendoerfer and Falcone stores that they
    hvae near Boston Commons.  We go in there, and they know they are going
    to be there fore awhile.

    re .88, once in awhile I get a glimpse of the Nashville channel (or
    whatever it's called) when I'm flipping through the channels looking
    for something to watch.  I've never seen anything that caught my
    intention long enough to make me linger.  I think I might be allergic.

    The movie was shown on BBC last weekend.
    It's called 'Made in heaven' and had short appearances of
    Ric Ocasek as a mechanic, Tom Petty as a gambler
    and Neil Young as a truck driver.

    I believe Lee Ving was in the movie "Clue." He was also one of the best
    things in The Decline of Western Civilization (but that was a
    punkumentary, so it doesn't count.)
    
    I don't think anyone's mentioned this one: your grandparents may
    remember Phil the Spectre as the drug dealer at the beginning of "Easy
    Rider."

Sting also appeared (briefly) in Terry Gilliam's "The Adventures of Baron
Munchausen" (a wonderful, underappreciated film.)  His role was that of a
town soldier who was being brought to the (mayor?) for having slain a large
number of the enemy, rescuing some of his compatriots, and other heroic
efforts.  The mayor, upon hearing this, said "Have him executed at once.  We
can't have the other soldiers getting depressed over his example.", and he is
carted off.

Though Sting's role is just a walk-on, it was heavily emphasized in materials
distributed to the audience of a pre-screening of the film.  The reaction of
the audience, who apparently had been expecting a more significant role,
was decidedly negative and contributed to Columbia's wresting editing control
of the film from Gilliam.

    I just saw "Falling from Grace" which John Mellencamp played the lead
    role and directed as well (I think he co-wrote it too). Although there
    was some music in the film's soundtrack, I don't believe any of it was
    his.

    The film tells the story of a big star who unpon returning to his
    hometown in Indiana ghoes through a lot of personal conflict, i.e.
    misses being with his family, can't quite fit in with the regular folks
    that have everyday worries like paying the mortgage, wants to quit the
    road but doesn't know what to do with himself if he does, as a real big
    problem with his father, blah, blah, blah.

    It was actually very well done. He did an adequate job in the lead,
    although it wasn't exactly as stretch. Good food for thought for those
    of us that have wondered what it would be like if we ever made the big
    time.

    	Saw "Natural Born Killers" this past weekend.  What a totally
    	intense experience!!  Not for the faint of heart, that's for
    	sure...
    
    	The soundtrack was put together by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch
    	Nails.  I gotta say that the music certainly matched what
    	was happening on the screen.
