Gotta agree with Dave on this one ... WGIR is/was (for my tastes) one of
the better stations in New England. It's out of Manchester, NH and was
the only station that came in (and was worth listening to) once out
of the northern range of 'BCN. Although, I used to complain about the
sad state of radio in the Boston area over the past decade; now that I
live in the wilds of Colorado, I look back on those days with a certain
nostalgia. Radio in Colorado Springs S*CKS big ones!!!!!!!!!!
Stations stick within their very narrowly defined genre and never
deviate. If you want variety, you've got to keep that button-pushin'
finger in good shape (which has beneficial side-affects ;^)

If I lived in Colorado Springs, the first thing I would complain
about would be the town's night beat, or the lack of it rather.
The whole town goes to bed around 8-9 pm.
There was this decent looking restaurant on Academy, I think it was
called Mirage, one night we pushed it's door at 9:05 pm, and they told
us that they were closed.
One Monday night I went to Old Colorado and I was scared and it was not
even 8 pm, it was so dark and empty, even the diners were closed.
I never had anything to do after 9 pm (that is when the shops close).
Boulder, on the other hand is a very lively town, I guess because of
the University. The pedestrian area is packed full of people, walking,
making music, all the restaurants were full and open till late.

384.16 | Hey, move here | GJO001::REITER | | Fri Mar 26 1993 14:02 | 36 |
| There's an outstanding FM stereo station here in, of all places, Grand
Rapids, Michigan.
From 7am to midnight they play nothing but music --- "eclectic" music.
NO commercials, NO weather, NO sports, NO news, occasionally a few
community service spots and local events announcements, and a little DJ
chatter.
It's listener-sponsored and also receives money through the same
mechanism that funds the local access cable TV stations, but it is
(thankfully) NOT part of the PBS public radio network. I'm not sure of
the signal strength, but it only covers the county.
The DJs (or "programmers" as they call themselves) are all volunteers
who do 3 hour shifts by themselves with no other staff. They operate
out of the adult-ed center in a neighboring town. There is a full-time
station manager.
The music range includes jazz, folk, folk rock, acoustic and electric
blues, reggae, world beat, local talent, progressive... if you are not
fond of a particular artist or style, just wait 5 minutes and
something completely different will be on.
I can't really explain how it differs from a really good college
station; maybe that's the best analogy. But rather than separate
shows for each style of music (like WERS-FM) this is one 17-hour show
mixing MANY styles, with some VERY listenable music, and exposure to
some other stuff that might "grow" on you.
Now they are having a Spring Concert Series every other Thursday night
to raise funds for larger facilities and better equipment. Last night
they brought in the Holmes Brothers. Upcoming are Carrie Newcomer,
Trova, Christine Lavin, and Peter Ostrushko & Dean McGraw.
What a great radio station! WYCE-FM 88.1 Wyoming, Michigan

Buff) have moved over to WNWK-FM, 105.9 for a morning show (6AM-9AM)
featuring mainly new and unsigned bands. They also play some older
stuff (very little), but not the cuts you're used to hearing.
There was a feature article about them in New York Magazine about a
month ago. They talked about the fact that WNEW is totally dinosaured
(IMO - I agree) and unwillingly to feature bands that don't fit there
classic rock mold.
Check them out it's very interesting and it beats listening to Richard
Neer rant and rave. I can't stand what NEW has become and I feel their
is an alternative to them. It's nice to be exposed to a breath of

W%%% 88.1 is the best of the Boston area college stations. They have

They also do jazz &/or classical during the afternoon commute.
WZBC 1550 AM ! in addition to their FM 89.?, will play decent

Well, a reasonable guess, but incorrect. WMBR studios are located in
the basement of the Walker Memorial building at MIT, and the call
letters stand for Walker Memorial Basement Radio. Of course you can
fit more sayings to the call letters, but that was the "official" one
when they changed over.

Amongst the ones I got a chance to try, I have always liked the US
radio stations much more than the Canadian ones. Or at least the
ones I get here in Ottawa.
I somehow find the DJ in US stations smarter and funnier. They are
informative and witty. I find music to be much better than my radio
station here in Ottawa.
First of all, 1 dj is always better than 2. When there is two of them
then they start making insider jokes and spend a lot of time laughing
and amusing themselves. I always feel that they are entertaining one
another instead of entertaining the listener.
I have sampled a few classical rock stations in US and they were always
much more fun to listen to. Better music and useful information.
Should I have put this note under "bashing"?

Do you guys do this: You park your car, the radio is playing a tune
you like. You want to hear more of the song, so in order to delay
turning of the ignition, you first open the door. You are still
listening to the song. Something happens there. You get out, push
the "lock" key on the door and shut the door. The car is still running,
your favourite song is still playing, the keys are still in and all
the doors are locked.

How was his family trapped in "there" for hours?
And what is rimshot?
Fred, my car stereo is equipped with that feature which resets the
volume back to a medium level every time you turn it off. So, even if
you leave your car with radio blasting with a high volume, next time
you start it, you don't get an audio shock.
I have locked the keys in the car four times so far and two of those,
exactly the way I described, just to be able to hear the song a couple
more seconds. Once out of those four cases, I actually had the plastic
key (which only works for a couple of times) with me and didn't need to

And don't insist, I am not going to tell you about the time when I
did not forget to put the coffee, did not forget to put the water, did
not forget to turn the coffee machine on but forgot to place the coffee
pot under the filter. I am not going to tell you how I found coffee

Aha! So it happens to somebody else besides me!
Actually, it doesn't have to be the radio to get me locked out.
Anytime that I turn off the ignition and don't *immediately* remove
the key (perhaps I was looking in my wallet to see if a credit card
I needed was in it) I'm in danger of locking myself out of the car.

Lale's "gotta hear that song title/artist/news story" syndrome and "let's talk

My solution has been to fight fire with fire, i.e. teach the autopilot to
correct its own mistake. After the last time I locked myself out of a vehicle
(I'd estimate more than five years ago), I made it a strict practice to *HAVE
THE KEYS IN MY HAND* when locking the door. This is a tad faster than locking
the doors from the outside with the key, but serves the same purpose. Now, my
autopilot tells me something is wrong if I ever *try* to lock the keys with an

However, some of us (no names mentioned) have so-called idiot-proof cars
and still manage to lock themselves out. This can be accomplished by
locking the driver's side door with the key, beginning to walk away,
remembering that you left something in the glove compartment, opening up the
passenger side door with the key, laying the key on the driver's seat
while getting the document out of the glove comparment, then locking
and closing the passenger door with the shinny keys laughing at you
from the driver's seat. Believe me, build an idiot-proof locking system,
and we'll build a better idiot.

i locked my cars in the car once in vermont with the radio

to clean the windows. got out the windex and towels
and cleaned. when done i got out and close/locked the
door. (you always realize you screwed up when the
door is 1/2 inch from closing). since there were 10
of us i didn't need my car. i had my roommate mail me
a spare key. since then i always carry a spare in my
wallet. two weeks later, i dropped my keys down a
sewer grate, but because of my vermont caper, i had
a spare key in my wallet. now, i often leave my wallet
in the car. was at newport in rhode island when i
got in my car for a minute to perform some manual task ;-)
had the radio on. yep, got out and left the radio and
the keys in the car. i have one of those tilt up sunroofs
and figured out that three hands can open the car from
the outside by taking the sunroof off. impossible for one
person to do, tough for two, but doable for three.
then i locked my keys in my car (sunroof tilted). this
time we took a golf ball retriever, reached through the
tilted sunroof, and opened it.

I already do that with some things. I *never* close the hatchback without
checking to see if my keys are in my pocket. And at home I *never* take
my keys out of my pocket unless I'm putting them in their designated spot
on the dresser. Guess I need to develop a habit around closing the main
car door as well.
Last time I locked my keys in my car I was too far from home to call anyone
for help. I was in the parking lot of a music store in another city.
When I realized what I'd done I became full of that calm relaxed feeling
that can only be learned by repeated bone-head stunts. I shrugged my
shoulders, went into the store, made my purchases, and calmly asked them
to call me a locksmith. Cost me $50 (ouch!). What was *really* scary,
though, was it only took the locksmith about 10 seconds to open my car
with a piece of bent wire!

I really wish there were more rock stations (and I don't mean that "soft"
crap), or ANY rock stations, for that matter, that didn't cater to the
younger set. Because, unfortunately, that's who's listening to, and
ENJOYING (hard for me to believe), the likes of Liz Wilde, Hillman, etc.
And when they're not talking their fool heads off, or playing the same
songs over and over again, the infantile advertisements you have to put up
with force you to move to something like WCRB (Boston) classical radio. At
least there they play music probably 90% of the time.
Wouldn't a rock radio station that just played MUSIC, with little or no
DJ interference, at least, (I know it's too much to ask to cut down on
the advertisments), wouldn't a station like that just fly? Wouldn't it
become a big hit? I've often thought the same thing about MTV: cut out
all the crap, show just videos, or other musical venues (concerts, etc),
and only cut in every 20 minutes or so with commercials. Feature all
kinds of music, not just popular, rock or rap.
Anybody want to start a new trend? I'll invest...

I don't get it either. There used to be a fabulous radio station
out of Peterborough NH - WMDK - 92.1FM. They played a great mix
of old, new, rock, a little folk, a little jazz, a little
country. You might not like every song they played but it was
never boring and you could actually get turned on to good stuff
(What a concept!). The announcers spoke like adults. (Not like
those soft rock zombies on 'BOS). Great station.
It went off the air around 90 or 91 - now Michael Bolton and
old Supremes hits live there. I called and wrote and complained -
they said the old format couldn't generate enough advertising revenue.
Everyone I knew who was in range of the station LOVED it. I just
don't get it. I don't know why quality radio can't survive in
the Boston market.
BTW - if you are ever on the Cape or Islands - try WMVY - I forget
the frequency - around 95 or 96 I think. Cool station.

College Radio just play a less popular Top 40, but the play lists
don't appear any larger to me.
When the college stations do the soul, blues, and gospel shifts, that's
when they peak, but as rock stations, seems like the same repetitiveness
with different tunes.

You, me, and probably a good percentage of listeners. So why isn't it
done? It's got to be $$$$$.
I heard a few weeks ago, that through a satellite link (I think it was),
a service exists where you can tune in to hundreds of radio stations across
the country. If I knew I could pick between maybe a dozen or so rock
stations as opposed to two or three, I'd probably spend the money and
subscribe. It was being said that local radio stations thought they would
suffer because of this. Anyone hear anything more about this?
Typical scenario...I set up the tape deck to record some tunes off the
radio. First five minutes: station #1 plays a tune I despise, #2 DJ is
babbling, #3 commercials. Next five minutes: #1 DJ is babbling,
#2 playing a tune I've heard too many times, #3 good tune, but I missed
the first minute (thought the preceeding commercials would take longer).
Next five minutes: all stations babbling because it's near the top of the
hour...and on and on...I'm lucky if I get maybe one or two good tunes in
a two hour period...

When WCGY first became WEGQ they had no DJs, no commercials,
practically non-stop music. In fact, at first, I thought that someone
had bought the station as a tax write-off, and that they were keeping
it transmitting only to hold on to the FCC license. That lasted for
about ten days, and if you could had any liking at all for the music it
was a practically perfect radio station.
Alas, they appear to have found DJs and advertisers.

re. the cassette deck solution:
My Car CD player gets used about 90% of the time, the radio about 10%
(and AM news/talk half of that 10%)... The problem with this is that soon,
if you don't take out some time to listen to the blasted radio, you don't

It's a Catch 22, and I'd been opting for "guessing" rather than trudging

But actually with all the Web servers (and Notes), it's getting a lot
easier to find groups that people review, discuss, list anthologies

By the way, I lived in Poughkeepsie, NY and there were two stations I'd

WVKR at 91.3 FM. Although Vasser's station varies a lot, depending on
