357.0. "Moody Blues" by AKRON::KVOCHICK () Sat Jan 23 1993 18:24

I'm looking for the lyrics and potentially a source to purchase
a copy of a song done by one of the Moddy Blues members in a solo
attempt... It was either Justin Hayward or Mike Pinder, I believe,
and I'm not too sure of the title of the song....I remember some of the
    lyric:

"The autumn leaves drift slowly past my window pane,
You always love this time of year,
The winter winds will be much colder now,
    		 'cause you're not here.....

    		and some of the bridge;

"Like the sun through the trees you came to love me,
Like the leaves on the trees you blew away..."

    anybody got any ideas?

I believe this was also released as a single, a '45, in some form.
I've heard the song on radio stations without the bits of Richard
Burton voiceover present on Wayne's album. I don't know if it's
available to the public in that form, though...

Thanks for all the quick replies....the local record stores around here
are not being much help.....they seem to know nothing of the "Jeff

'45 of the song.....wish I would have taped it before I abandoned

avail.....would still like the song, if anyone out there in notesland
    stumbles into it.....

The album is "War of the worlds". It is by Jeff Wayne. It is a double
album/CD. It has been a consistent seller for years, and if your local
record shop can't find it they are incompetent.

I saw the Moody Blues about ten years back, and they were great. I
saw them about three years ago, and Moraz had this really goofy,
carnival-like organ sound going ... what they did to "Legend of a
Mind" was blasphemous.

I'd give 'em another chance, though. :^)

Given the musical talent in this band, and the arrangements of much
of their work, I always figured they'd be the *ultimate* "unplugged"
band. I'd love to see them do an accoustic show.

I had seen the Moody Blues in Denver Co. back in 1970 and they were
awesome. You could have heard a pin drop the audience was so rapt.

I saw them again right after they acquired their new (at the time)
keyboard player when they played at Boston Garden and it was a major
disappointment. He seemed focused on demonstrating what a technical
wizard he was on the keys and his solos and embellishments simply
didn't fit the Moody Blues style. No subtlety whatsoever. Even
though the mellotron was basically getting obsolete, its use definitely
lent the texture that characterized the Moody Blues imo. They haven't
been the same since. In Search Of The Lost Chord, Threshold Of A
Dream, and Days Of Future Past remain my favorite Moody Blues albums.

From live tapes I've heard over the years, the one area where the live
Moodies fall down is vocals. Trying to meet the standards of the LPs
is tough, and they don't make it. Not many do, Yes was also a
disappointment in this area when I saw them.

This past week, the PBS station in Denver showed the video of the Moody
Blues concert taped last September at Red Rocks with Colorado Symphony.
The only frustating part of the evening was that it broadcast during a
'pledge' night so there were the obligatory 15 minute breaks asking for
donations (but I edited all that out).

All in all, it was a very good concert!

They played the "Red Rocks" concert on the local PBS station this
past weekend. Excellent show. Naturally it was during a pledge drive
but (like another noter) I recorded it and edited out the "Please
give us a call and pledge" spots.

Anyway, I noticed that 4 of the original Moody's were there...Justin
Hayward, John Lodge, Graham Edge (sp?), the flutist whose name I can't
remember, and another keyboard player replacing the original. Can
anyone give me the names of the flutist and the original keyboard
player....it's driving me nuts trying to remember.

Supposedly he had a nervous breakdown after Seventh Sojourn, and could
no longer tour with them, though he did record Octave, I think. Since
then, I don't know, though I've heard rumors that he's a born-again
Christian and is no longer involved in humanistic rock & roll ;^}

Patrick Moraz is no longer with the group; he was in court suing
the Moody Blues a short time ago (he won, with a small settlement).
I'm hazy as to the details.

The Great Woods performance was outstanding Sunday night-although
Mansfield isn't RED ROCKS,Colorado, the weather was perfect and the
show was similar to the Colo. show.

The symphony backing makes a major difference in the MOODIES sound as
one could tell the difference between last summer's show they did with
    CHICAGO at G.WOODS.

I'm looking forward to the "rumored"Box Set that may be forthcoming
and their annual Summer tour next year.

The 2 female backup singers/dancers,2 Keyboardists and additional
drummer(besides regular Grame Edge)-certainly add to the show also.

Actually, that's Justin on lead, John on bass (usually - they all
can play a lot of instruments).

But I agree 100% - the symphony made this show. You haven't heard them

This from the spring '93 issue of "Higher and Higher:"

"According to a June 19th interview carried by the Knight-Ridder News
Service, Justin Hayward said that plans were underway for a new Moody
Blues album. 'We've already started talking about it,' he said. 'I hope
to be back in the studio, if not before the end of this year, by the
beginning of next year.' When asked what fans can expect from the new
album, Hayward replied, 'I don't know. But I personally would like to see
a return to the type of records we made in the '60s, just once, to see how
it would feel. To blow any kind of convention. And to do our own thing.'

Can anyone confirm for me that Patrick Moraz, who had been playing
keyboards with them for a few years, isn't with them anymore - or
at least, isn't on this tour?

Yep, Moraz is no longer with the Moodies. Current publicity shots show
only four: Hayward, Lodge, Edge and Thomas.

Then there are the hired hands...not sure how many/who this tour.
Their last pass through Boston, in a radio interview Hayward mentioned
a keyboardist and drummer (I think).

Moraz and the Moodies split none too happily, either. Somewhere they
ended up in court. In the end, the feeling was that the Moodies mostly
had him hired on contract (yes, even for as many albums that he did),
rather than considering him an integral part of the band.

Personally, I don't think his keybaord stall was particularly good for
the MBs, but the whole thing is rather sad.

I'm not sure of the name of the keyboard player that is touring with
them but it's definitely not Moraz.
In the videos that I've seen of the Moody's performing such songs as
"The Voice" his (Moraz') non-too-subtle presence is not complementary to
    their style.
Personally I'd love to see them persuade Mike Pinder to rejoin.

And, BTW, that's great news about the studio album. I'd love to see
them do a recording along their '60's style. It would sound great with
    todays recording technology.

357.58They will both go onto better thingsDREGS::BLICKSTEINDOS BootFri Aug 27 1993 16:1316
I think overall this is good news.

Moraz's talents are wasted in the MB's and he doesn't do them any
good either. He's a virtuosic keyboard player in a band with no
    need nor room for virtuoso.

Both Moraz and the MB's produce good music, but from the start I
thought it was a horrible fit.

If you want to hear what Moraz is really about, I'd recommend the album
    called "i".

I also thought he was GREAT for Yes. Relayer was a sudden and sharp
turn for them, but it was a good move and it totally rejuevenated my
interest in the band. I think it was unfortunate that it only lasted
    one album.

I've seen it in some of the import catalogs. I used to enjoy
hearing Moraz play excerpts from "i" during his solos with Yes.

Some other definitive Moraz work:

"Refugee". Moraz recorded this album with two former members of
The Nice (Davison and Jackson) before he joined Yes. Too bad they
didn't stay together. This is also an import-only CD.

At least one album recorded with Bill Bruford (can't remember title).
They played some live sets together billed as "An Evening of Drums
and Piano". Great improvisation.

357.61A very different kind of musical experienceDREGS::BLICKSTEINDOS BootMon Aug 30 1993 12:0021
"i" isn't out on CD in America (it is, as Barry mentioned, available
    overseas==as-an-import).

One of the tunes from "i" does appear on the "Flags" CD that he
did with Bill Bruford - but I'm not sure I'd recommend that CD.

FWIW, it took me a LONG time to really appreciate "i", but I now
cite it as one of the most original and creative albums of that
    time.

It's not always "melodic" (you can't whistle a lot of it) but
even the non-melodic sections seem to have a very musical expression
and emotion to it. I am NOT a fan of "synth-wash" bands like
Tangerine Dream and most of what Vangelis does; and thus, it pains
me to compare it to that but it did SOUND like that stuff on first
    listen.

It's definitely the kind of album you turn the lights out for - it's
a special trip to listen to it on headphones too.

Thanks, guys. I'll have to search it out as an import. To bring this
back to the Moody Blues, I thought that the boots he wore for the MB's
shows were pretty cool -- they had the "i" symbol on them.

I also really enjoyed the Moraz/Bruford albums & shows. Wish Moraz
    would get something else together.

I recently saw the tape of the "Red Rocks" concert, and was, to be kind, not
overly impressed. While Justin seemed to have the old intensity, the rest of the
bunch really seemed to be mostly mugging for the camera. I didn't care at all for
any of their new stuff, not even Justin's.

I was really expecting to be blown away by this concert, especially given the
full orchestral backup. The production aspect of the MB's stuff has always
impressed me, and lends itself very well to orchestral arrangements. While a few
of the oldies- "Somewhere," for instance- were great, overall I was depressed to
see/hear a great group slowly sliding (IMHO) downhill.

As always, your mileage may vary...

Well, cheer up a bit. Back in 74 or 75 I was listening to a

jist of the show and from the interviews was that the ride

The weather was great and the Moodies were excellent. Graeme Edge did
recite "The Dream". I was expecting it but most of the people there
weren't and it was humorous to see some of the looks on the faces of

They are performing some different songs, such as Eternity Road,
