5201.0. "Decline and fall of notes" by PCBUOA::BAYJ (Jim, Portables) Fri Feb 21 1997 17:27

    Here's the thing...

New people are coming into Digital all the time, but...

At least in my area (PCBU) these people have zero interest, tolerance
or clue about command lines, VMS, character-cell, etc.

Admittedly, we have web-based forum products now, but although I may be
a tree-hugger, I don't see the same type if interest or demography with
these tools as with notes. I think noters are a dying breed, and are
not likely to be replaced (in spirit, anyway) by web-based equivalents
(especially since most web tools don't quite function in the same
    manner).

For example, news-groups are tremendously high in noise and low in
content. Always have been, and IMHO always will be. NOT a viable
substitute for notes. On the other hand, as I mentioned, I just
haven't seen a groundswell of support within Digital to transition to
forums, but perhaps I run in the wrong circles.

For example, a guy just walked into my office to upgrade my laptop.
Turns out he's an F4 driver, 80s vintage, and ex-Pan-Am guy. But our
group has just gone to MS Exchange. VMS accounts are not being handed
out. And I haven't really seen much interest here in the corporate
intranet web. So even though he might be interested, I doubt unless he
walked into my office and saw my aviation paraphenalia, that he would
ever even know that there is an aviation conference.

And if he has to access it through the web gateway, I doubt if he'll
    *ever* care.

rec.aviation... is not a valid substitute. Someone once told me that
an effective way to get a conversation going in the newsgroups is to
say something related to what you want to discuss, but is patently
wrong, and amidst the flame responses you may find the answer to your
question. Otherwise, its likely that no one will even bother to reply.

The Digital era ended a while back. I think the notes era is drawing
to a close. I'll be here till the bitter end (in the notesfile, that
is!). But I don't think that will be long. I know VMS nodes are
dropping like flies, and it won't be long before there won't be a place
    to host a notes conference!

5201.1Let them know NOTES are existing !JGODCL::CLEEUWMon Feb 24 1997 02:2813
Well it seems i'm not the only one that noticed this phenomena.
Now these days people are transferring to EXCHANGE and forget about
their VAX acco8nt. (for me I'm still browsing through the notes files
and it still is a valuable source for all kinds of information to me.
Would hate to see that this source would die due to lack of interest or
is it a lack of knowoing these files even exist.
If the latter is the case then we shoudl educate these newcomeres and
inform them about this wealth of information in all kinds of area's.
But on the otherhand - if no new VAX accounts are issued - how should
they be able to get acces to them ?
    Any suggestions ?

Well, as I mentioned, there are actually two ways to access notes from
a PC, besides an actual PC Notes client, which I think used to be a
part of Pathworks (and that I know nothing about):

You can use your web browser and the following URL syntax:

    		http://www-notes.lkg.dec.com/vmszoo/flying/

Where you change the last two components to indicate the node name and
the conference name. You can also add a note number and a reply number
to go to a specific note.

Also, to facilitate finding conferences (even better than
Easynotes.lis), you can use the URL:

    		http://www-esn.lkg.dec.com/decnotes/

which has a real nice categorized listing of Notesfiles available, all
    hot-linked and ready to go.

Also, many Notesfiles are available through the net news gateway, and
can be accessed using a standard news reader application (comes
standard with Netscape and Explorer). I haven't done this, but I'm
sure you've seen notes with a note news sig appended to it.

Another one I just thought of is to use Excursion to run Notes in
Windows (Motif) mode, so it looks sort've like a windows app. However,
this still requires you have a VMS account, even if you don't know how
    to use it.

So, there *are* ways for non-VMS users to access notes. Unfortunately
I feel that the experience is not quite the same.

Someone pointed out to me that you can't post to FLYING from a news
reader. Of course, that might suit the RO community just fine.

BTW, although this conference may be quiet, it certainly seems to have
a healthy readership. Thanks to all you RO noters for "breaking your
silence". Its good to know that noting in this conference is not like
typing with one finger (sorry, I never undeerstood Zen very well :-).

5201.4A little late, but...FX28PM::dlj.alf.dec.com::jenningsThis space for rentFri Apr 18 1997 14:105
There are a couple of Windows based notes clients (and servers). You don't need
a VMS system at all for hosting or reading/replying to a notes conference.

Are there any free (or at least, free to Digital) PC Notes clients?

I'm hearing rumors about our VMS accounts going away. :-(

Yes, NETNOTES. There's a notes conference on it somewhere. NETNOTES is from
OSTECH, but Digital has a corporate license to use it. There's a special key
you have to enter to enable it.

If you can't find it, let me know and I'll point you to a copy.
