| Re -.1: Thanks for posting this. I'm sensitive to molds and chemicals too,
and I gave up on using a humidifier a few years ago for just this reason. To
reiterate:
1. Standing water, and especially water-soaked materials, grow mold and
mildew, which the unit then spews into the air. Very bad for anyone who is
allergic to this stuff.
2. Almost any chemical you can put in the water to kill this stuff is a problem
for people who are sensitive to chemicals.
When it's really dry inside, I boil a pan of water on the stove. If I
needed to humidify more than a few days a year, I would buy a warm-mist unit.
Make sure that the warm-mist unit actually boils the water and doesn't
just heat it. Hot water below 150 F (not sure of the exact figure) is an
even better breeding ground for some "stuff" than room temp.
