    Last Wednesday Pinney went out and didn't come back.
    
    She was an older cat -- about 16 or 17 as best we could figure. Like
    most of the others a stray that had wandered into our hearts along the
    way.
    
    She was the second cat we got, followed by more than a dozen others in
    the next 15 years. She was the fifth one to die, but the first to go
    off by herself to die.
    
    She could be ornary, and as more and more cats showed up, she, as the
    second most senior, took a dim view of having to share her space. Yet,
    she could be so loving.
    
    We first named her Cricket because her purr so sounded like one. But,
    you know how cats' names change over time ...
    
    She adored my wife and was never out of her sight when inside. At night
    she had to sleep up on her pillow. If my wife was feeling sick or sad
    Pinney would know and would try to comfort her by touching my wife's
    face with her paw and purring softly.
    
    As she got older she got that boneless, baggy shape some female cats
    get, but she never lost her pride.
    
    She had a number of relatively minor problems as she got older, plus
    some major ones. The most recent was a chronic inflammation of her
    gums, which made it painful to eat. I medicated her every day for the
    past several months, and she hated every pill and liquid.
    
    She had never been away more than overnight, and that perhaps six times
    in 15 years.
    
    Last Tuesday evening I couldn't get her to eat anything, nor drink even
    milk. She just sat there, purring quietly and making bread on the
    blanket in the livingroom, her eyes tired and half closed. Wednesday 
    morning she went out with the rest, but never returned.
    
    My wife and I hope she went quickly and didn't suffer. It's tough to
    write this.
    
    Anyway, she had a good life with us and we cared for her.
    
    It doesn't get any easier no matter how many times you go through it.

	Ken, I'm so sorry to hear about Pinney. It sounds like she had a wonderful life with you, and that her last days were spent with the people she loved the most. Take heart in knowing she's in a better place. Pam

	Thank goodness for memories... I agree...it never, EVER gets easier. My husband and I still get weepy when we think of our Tiki...9 months gone... Our thoughts are with you. K.C., Leigh, Rico & Alex

	I am with you. One never can get used to this. But there is the place, you know, for good kitties where they go to. I feel fully with you. My old friend Cirmos is gone just about a week ago... He was not my cat (or I was not his), from a neighboured old lady. But I had as many tears in my eyes as she had. Keep up, they catties have it good already, and we'll meet them. I believe that. Nat

	Ken, So sorry to hear about Pinney--16 or 17 years!! If it were ever easy to take, I'd begin to suspect we'd somehow become less of a person. No matter how old or how young, it's still hard. Tears and hugs to you and your wife... Mary + 7

	How enormously sad. I feel bad for you. Have you ah, er, found her yet? It must be really tearing at you not knowing where she is. That's what my dog did, when I was only 14. He was 22, just went off when it was time and died. Didn;t find him for 2 weeks, and those were hot summer weeks too. My Dad wouldn't let me see the remains. But he got a wonderful funeral, being a very popular dog in the neighborhood. The kids loved him. condolences, Denise and the gang of 10

	Hi Ken, I'm so sorry to hear the news. I'm sure you'll be feeling the loss for quite a while. I'll bet the pain is worth it though, considering you got all those years of enjoyment from her. She's so lucky she lived such a long life. I'm glad you and your wife had her in your life. Leslie

	A little belated, since I just got back here, but... Dear Ken, I'm very sorry to hear about Pinney. It sounds like she went off peacefully. I'm sure you have many many wonderful memories that you and your wife can share love, Jill
