1305.0. "Bose Roomates or AR Companions?" by BPOV06::MICHAUD (Think about software that thinks!) Tue Aug 23 1988 09:27

Is anyone using a pair of Bose 'Roommates' of AR's 'Companion'
speakers with their portable cd player. I was thinking of
going this route. Can either of these speaker sets be used
with a portable? How is the sound? Is there enough power in
a portable to drive these speakers. I believe that both pairs
of speakers are ac powered. Is this for some kind of internal
amp within the speakers. Any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks..John//

    To answer your questions;

yes they work with portables, they usually plug into the headphone
    jack.
yes they need ac, due to the fact that they have an amp built in.

There are also powered speakers that run on battery. They are
    usually pretty small.

There are other brands to check out, Lechmere has several, Tweeter
probably, and other hifi stores. Have fun

I have the AR Powered Partners. They work great. Along with my portable
Technics, they generate enough sound to keep you from falling asleep. They
come with power cords, and an adapter for the line out or headphone jack of
your portable. Once you have them you can order a carrying case (I did), a
battery pack (I didn't) which lets you run the speakers about as long as the
pack on my portable CD, around 4 hrs., and a cigarrette lighter adapter. You
can get up to about 10' separation, but since the volume, tone, etc. for each
speaker is on the speaker, you need to "balance" them by visual settings.

Does this mean that the amps in the AR speakers are small? I realize
that you are not going to get the volume that you would get from
a 200 watt amp but are these speakers enough for decent sound.
I was hoping that the sound would at least fill a 12x12 room with
no problems. Am I expecting a bit too much from these speakers?
Are the Bose speakers a better choice for this purpose? I noticed
that the Bose do not have any sound controls on the speakers. Is
the sound adjusted by the portable (volume only..obviously)? I
like the idea that I can adjust the sound from the speakers because
you can not do this from the portable. Are there tone controls
     on the ARs?

The line into the pARtners is from the line level output of
the portable. Trying to use the phono output of the portable is
likely to blow the amp of the speakers. The Partners have a volume
level right on the speakers themselves, and they really are powerful
for their size. I was able to keep a good level of sound, slightly
above background, for an outdoor party I held last weekend with
forty people. I would tend to say thet they are comperable to a
similar sized speaker powered by an 85W - 100W power amp.
1305.6New BOSE RoomMates on the wayBOHR::CASSONEDom Cassone UPO1-3 DTN 296-4797Thu Aug 25 1988 16:0812
By the way, BOSE has announced and should start shipping in Sept.
the RoomMate Series II. This powered speaker, is a little larger
and tuned about 120 Hz lower (to improve the low-end that was
complained about in an earlier note). In addition, the amp has
at least 3 times the output (don't remember the exact numbers).

BEST OF ALL - They can run on a 12V battery that is included in
the carrying case. This set-up gives TRUE portability. Take your
Portable CD player, your Walkman, and your BOSE RoomMates and you
can play music for hours without an outlet?

1305.7AR tone control - yesHOONOO::PESENTIJPMon Aug 29 1988 05:435
Yes, the AR's have a tome control on each speaker. They can generate a pretty
decent amount of sound. Never tried them on batteries, though.

A friend of mine who works at Bose says that they are having
manufacturing problems with the new Roommates so it may be a while
    before they hit the shelves.

The current ones will be dropped at that time (maybe a chance on
    some good close-out prices?)
