| Gina, thanks for taking this on. I ordered about 8 classical CDs
from Noteworthy then stopped, both for lack of selection and lack
of ability to determine what I was buying (I already knew for the
few that I ordered).
I don't have any suggestions for format, but (ignoring MHS selections)
my classical collection consists 90% of the following lables, in
order, so that's what I'd like to see them stock for classical:
1) Archiv
2) CBS
3) L'oiseau-Lyre
4) RCA
5) Telarc
Thanks again for doing this,
B

| This morning I again spoke to the owner of NOTEWORTHY. He was glad
to have the feedback I gave him (thanks Bruce!). They are beginning
to address this issue.
He will be putting out a new edition of their catalog on July 25th.
I sure hope some changes show up in the next release of their catalog.
Thanks,

1247.3 | I talked to them too: | NCCODE::PEREZ | The project penguin is dead! | Tue Jul 05 1988 19:05 | 24 |
| The last time I ordered discs from Noteworthy (in May) I had the same problem.
When I called in the order I talked to the woman who took the order about
this problem...
I suggested a couple things:
1. Rather than having the entire catalog sorted by artist? set up catagories
to separate classical from jazz from rock.
2. Provide specific information about the actual label, number, artist, etc
about the classical. Even better would be the above plus a list of selections
but I know space is limited. Given the composer, label, artist, and number
we could check out the selections.
She also sounded very happy to receive feedback and told me she would pass my
comments on to the owner.
BTW: I also mentioned these notesfiles and she sounded very interested
and pleased.
hopefully we'll get a better catalog and order more discs,

1247.4 | I hope they stay cheap | NITPIK::FIELDHOUSE | You played it for her... | Wed Jul 06 1988 06:51 | 20 |
| My solution is to do my window shopping at the local
Tower/Strawberries/Whatever, note the # of the disc I want and then
order it (if it's available).
I hope that a better catalog is forthcoming for you folks, I'm just a
little concerned. It seems that Noteworthy is catering more and more
to the individual consumer -- They accept credit card orders now which
I believe means they pay a fee to the bank, and now indications are
they are going to spend some time re-working their catalog. The point
is: all of this is costing money and I'm afraid we're the ones that are
going to pay for it in the end. This is probably not too big a
concern but the trend (if there is one yet) is disturbing. I don't
need or want a "Tower Records by mail".
On a side note, their last catalog indicates that they have greatly
increased their mailing list due to "word of mouth". I wonder how
much of that was really "word of notes"?

| For classical entries, I have found that I have to scan the entire
catalogue. There are some classical discs that are entered in the
most unusual ways.
In order to determine what an entry on the POC label is, I take
the order number and try to match it with one in a CD catalogue,
such as the Green Catalog (or whatever it is called). Much to my
surprise, I have found some very good discs.
The problem is that, after having ordered less than 10 discs from them
I feel that I am nearing the bottom of the barrel. It would be
wonderful if they split their selections by category and expanded their
classical inventory.

| Darren,
If you live within NH or Mass they have overnight delivery if you
get your order in by 3 pm. I had a problem not with Noteworthy who
shipped it to Lowell Mass overnight but with the UPS folks who decided
that it was not that important to leave the package with me by with
anyone they could find to sign for it. Fortunately I found the package
to bad it to 2 weeks to track it down but the package was originally
delivered on the day noteworthy said it would. Their prices are
still the best around even if you have to wait a few days for them.

| I just received the latest NOTEWORTHY catalog. They have changed
their pricing strategy. They now show a "max" price of $7.95 on
MANY, MANY, MANY of the CDs. (e.g. the Nat King Cole CDs i bought
several mos ago for $11.?? now show a max price of $7.95). In addition
there is a "surcharge" of $2.?? if one only buys one record and
the surcharge diminishes to 0 for 5 CDs or more. It looks like an
obvious attempt to service those who want to buy fewer than 5 at
still competitive prices. (The handling charge is still in force)
But, for those who buy in quantities of 5 or more the prices are
even better!
So, i am looking again for those in ZK who might like to pool purchases.
I will make the order, bring the CDs to work and collect the money.
Each person who is interested will pay the NOTEWORTHY billing price-
GUARANTEED to be no more that the catalog price and frequently less-
plus their fraction of the shipping/handling costs.
If interested send me a mailgram @VMSSPT::NICHOLS
I will bring in a catalog available for viewing at lunchtime tomorrow

Note 230.0 What do the NOTEWORTHY "labels" mean 4 replies
VMSSPT::NICHOLS 23 lines 21-DEC-1988 13:07
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Noteworthy catalog typically lists classical music with the "label"
POC nnnnnn.n.
Can y'all explain what the "label" means?
Is this some sort of "standard" calalog-ing nomenclature, and if so is
there an accessible catalog that expands the meaning of the "index".
The reason I am asking is that Noteworth offers very good prices, but
one isn't really aware of all the necessary info.
e.g. from Noteworthy
BEETHOVEN SYMPHONIES 5&8 POC 415051.2
No info on who conducted what orchestra.
Could be anything from Carl Munch BSO
through Karajian BSO (Bremerhaven Symphony)
to Schickele USNDSO (University of southern
North Dakota Symphony)

AQUA::ROST "Marshall rules but Fender controls" 10 lines 22-DEC-1988 08:23

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The "POC" is for "Polygram Original Classics", i.e. it's one of
the PolyGram labels, DG, Phillips, etc.
The 415051.2 is the PolyGram stock number. So if you have a Schwann
or equivalent you could look up all versions of that recording until
you find one on a PolyGram label with that number.
Until they change that system, buying classical through Noteworthy
is a real crap-shoot.

This problem has been brought to the attention of NOTEWORTHY.
I was told this fall that they were planning to redesign their
catalog to handle this problem.
Why not call them on 1-800-648-7972 or 603-883-9551.
I don't care if only 5% of the population loves classical music.
I feel we should be able to identify a classical CD in their
catalog just as easily as we can any other CD. I refuse to take
a chance on their classical listings.
If you know where I can buy a Schwann catalog in the Nashua, NH
area, please post it in this note.
Good luck with Noteworthy!

1247.21 | huh? | FSHQA1::SBEAUPRE | Duck and Cover | Mon Jan 30 1989 10:05 | 25 |
| This morning I called Noteworthy to order the latest group
of Frank Zappa catalog releases through Rykodisc, since I had
payed 2.50 for the catalog, and Rykodisc tends not to discount
at the retail level, I thought this would be a good way to recoup
the 2.50 ( the initial catalog cost is reimbursed upon first purchase)
as well as save a few bucks on the discs themselves. Unfortunately,
even though I had a customer order #, and was prepared to order
all three, I was informed it was their policy not to quote prices
on the phone. I was told "the prices will be in the new catalog",
now since this is strictly a mail order/over the phone operation
it seemed strange that they refused to tell me, even after ordering
the discs, what I was being charged. I their prices are so low,
why are they reluctant to communicate these savings to those with
an interest in using the service? I ordered the discs, price unseen,
so it will be interesting to see the final mystery bill. The best
I can figure the .75 cent per disc service charge will be eliminated
as well as .25 cent of the 3.75 U.P.S shipping charge for the complete
order. So far I'm paying aprox. $1.15 per disc for shipping alone.
Does anyone have an idea, from past experience, what the price
per disc will be? They are-

| The rationale for the Noteworthy policy against phone quotes is that
prices may change between the time that you place the order and the
time that they fetch from the shelves. In the print somewhere in the
catalogue they mention that prices are subject to change.
I agree that the process is a bit odd. They are not set up as a
direct-to-the-customer operation, at least not yet. They started out as
wholesalers and tend toward that style of business.

In their latest catalog update flier which went out last week, they've
stated that due to the sweeping price changes currently happening
(reductions, mostly), they cannot take the time to tell a customer the
exact price of every disc over the phone. They would never get the
orders taken. In most cases, the prices will be cheaper than a
previous catalog had listed. As stated in -.1, if you call in your
order early in the morning, say by 10 or so, and then call back around
3 or 4 pm, they will give you the exact bill as shipped.
Believe me, you'll be pleasantly surprised! I've sent in 2 orders so
far totalling 12 discs, and all prices were lower than expected, and
far superior to local retail prices here in Motown area. For instance,
I got Led Zeppelin I, II, & III for $8.85 each, and the stores all sell
them for $14.99.
A new catalog will be out in a couple weeks.
A very satisfied customer of Noteworthy,

| I have made about 5 or 6 orders to Noteworthy totalling about 30-40
disks. I can don't recall ever paying the price quoted in the catalog.
My cost is always less. My rationale has been "assume your cost is the
cost quoted in the catalog (still beats the stores) and then be
pleasantly surprised when the disks are delivered".

1247.26 | then again, maybe they're all right | FSHQA1::SBEAUPRE | Duck and Cover | Tue Jan 31 1989 11:46 | 9 |
| I received the Zappa c.ds today from U.P.S. The price per disc was
10.36, fairly consistent with the previous catalog prices for single
Zappa discs. A slight price increase, if anything. Purchase of 5
discs and under results in a .75 cent "service charge" per disc.
The shipping cost for 5 discs and under is 3.50. So, without
the initial 2.50 reimbursment for the catalog cost, and including
all shipping/service charges, the discs wind up selling for aprox.
$12.28. A savings of between 2-3 dollars per disc over standard
retail cost.
