1219.0. "Environmental CDs" by PIXEL::BRIAN (Brian Simons - DECXtop Publishing) Mon Jun 06 1988 11:25

Looking for "environmental" cds, e.g. a disc with the sound of crashing surf,
or a thunderstorm. No music, no words, just monotonous, lovely, boring, peaceful
sounds!

Anyone know of such discs?

They exist. I have one that I got at Lechmere in Nashua, NH. They can
generally be found in the 'NEW AGE' CD section.

There actually are such beasties. At Newbury Comics I even saw
a section labled "Environmental", next to "New Age". Has anyone
seen a section labled "Air Pudding"?

Titles such as "Sun Rise on the Cape at Dawn", which I guess sounds
different than "Sun Rise on the Cape at Dusk". Others were "Thunder
during a Storm", "Morning Birds" (or was it "Mourning Birds"?), and
the ever popular "Songs of Whales" (but that might have been some
music from some far away islands). Titles approximate, your memories
    may vary.

Seemed like there were lots of different discs of nothing but sound.
Supposed to be the "next music", according to one "industry observer".

Joe, I looked there and didn't see anything (but I didn't look too long).
Do you remember the name or album/producer/publisher so I can look for it
in a catalog?

Personally I would like to buy an incidental noises CD. Noises
like car ignitions, fuses burning, voices, etc. I occasionally
like to play around and make weird sonic disturbances and a CD
containing these noises would be just the ticket.

And just in case their are any wise guys in this conference. I
already own all the Art of Noise CDs. ;^)

I seem to have gotten two of them. Perhaps I bought up their entire stock :-).

They are produced by Syntonic Research, Inc (which did the vinyl, I think).
It is on the Atlantic Recording Corporation label. They are:

I did see something like this recently in the Nashua area. I forget
where. It was a sound effects CD and had a number of bizzare noises.
If you are near Nashua, try these in this order:

Rockit Record (sp?)
Record Town in the Pheasant Lane Mall

I saw it mixed in with the 'oldies' (you know, Vintage '60, Volume 634).
Good luck, and if you find it, post it here for future reference.

Rykodisc has a series called "A Day on Cape Cod" that includes:

    BABBLING BROOK
    EARLY CAPE MORNING
    SUMMER RAIN
    SUNSET SURF

There's also a series called "Moods" (on the Moods label --
    seriously!):

Vol. 1	TROPICAL RAIN FOREST / THUNDERSTORM TERROR
Vol. 2	CARIBBEAN ISLAND / SAILBOAT VOYAGE / OCEAN SURF

Rhino has a disc called SURF: AN ENVIRONMENTAL RECORDING.

And Bainbridge has a couple called STEEL RAILS UNDER THUNDERING
SKIES - RAILROADING SOUNDS and THE STORM AND THE SEA - NATURE'S
    MYSTIC MOODS.

These are all listed in a year-old GREEN COMPACT DISC CATALOG.
There are probably quite a few others on the market right now.

Try giving BCD -- Boston Compact Disc -- a call (they should be
in the phone book). They do mail-order.

I have the _Ultimate Seashore_ CD. I'm very disappointed... I
hear discontinuities that sound to me like tape splices. I never
noticed that on the vinyl. I find listening to the CD to be
really disconcerting. Anybody else notice this?

I have seen "digital sound generators" advertized in catalogs which
supposedly reproduce the sound of a rainstorm, surf, or white noise.
They're not cheap ($100-$200), and I wonder if the generated sound
wouldn't be annoying after a while. But, they could be an alternative
for someone looking for this type of programming.

1219.11Tintinabulation is an old favorite.DSSDEV::HALLGRIMSSONEirikur, CDA Product ManagerWed Jun 08 1988 14:3218
re: .6 and the Syntonic Research Co. "Oooh, _Tintinabulation_ on
CD!" I'll have to look for it. Gee, you won't be able to play
it at 16,33,45,&78 like they suggest on the liner notes...

_Ultimate Seashore_ would probably be VERY dissapointing on CD. This
recording was processed for playback at 16,33,&45 like Tintinabulation,
so the frequency spectrum is really truncated at both ends, and
it is in general a very old analog recording that was not made with
audiophiles in mind. I'm not surprised that you can hear splices
on the CD. Ugh! I wonder why they bothered. Tintinabulation was
done with some kind of early digital synthesizer, and the recording
quality was good. IFF they have done their homework, they re-recorded
it. Too much to ask, I know.

The latest Digital Audio has a report of a press release from
Rykodisc which says they are releasing an 8-disc set called
"Eight Hours in the Big Apple" - environmental sounds of
New York City. Sounds like just the thing to annoy your neighbors.

Too bad it was an April Fools joke (the DA editors got caught!)

However, Ryko is apparently releasing a series of REAL environmental
    sound discs.

re: .0

I was at Rockit Records in Nashua last night. Near the front of the store there
is a small section labeled Environmental. There were several CDs that have been
mentioned in this note. Even TinTinnabulation is there.... :-)

And I forgot to mention that there were two CDs there with various 'noises'.
There was a volume 1 and a volume 3. This implies at least three cds with
noise on them (sound effects, as in phone ringing etc).

1219.16The A-bomb goes . . .FRACTL::HEERMANCEIn Stereo Where AvailableMon Jun 13 1988 09:0713
I bought the sound effects CD volume three over the weekend from
Rockit Records. It has 92 different sounds ranging from cows to
A-bombs. My roommate has accused me of having the worlds most
    expensive "See and Say".

I find it amusing that the disk copyright notice states that any
reproduction of the sounds is not allowed. What do they really
think people are going to do with them? That's almost as bad as
a company claiming rights to a program you produce because you
    used their compiler.

1219.17I bought _Tintinabulation_ :-(DSSDEV::HALLGRIMSSONEirikur, CDA Product ManagerMon Jun 13 1988 11:0412
re .11, others: _Tintinabulation_ isn't a very good CD. They put
some words on the back implying that they re-made the recording,
but I'm sure it's just a mildy processed version of the analog master.
Worse, they chose to make the CD like the 16 RPM setting on the
LP. The normal speed version sounded much better.

I can't believe the audacity of these people reissuing this stuff
that wasn't recorded well before, with little or no effort added
to the CD product. They deserve to lose money on it.
