| "Digital Moonscapes" is available on CD. The sound is fantastic; I would
recommend this to any Walter/Wendy Carlos fan. I have not seen any other
Carlos releases.

I saw Moonscapes at Strawberries in Manchester, NH last month.

| I've seen both at Lechmere in Manchester.

| I have a copy of DIGITAL MOONSCAPES on CD. I echo what .1 said. From a
purely technical point of view, I'd say that it's by far the best CD I
own. I wasn't aware that SWITCHED ON BACH was available on CD yet; I'll
have to look for a copy.

| I found the compositions in Digital Moonscapes to be too MOR for my tastes.
My sixteen year old son (who is a "long term" fan of Carlos) thinks it's
wonderful though, and won't remove it from the laser.
Technically I agree with .-1 that it is quite good, however if you object
to any background noise, beware - I assume (I haven't read the notes in
the box) that because of the multitracking it was analog mastered.
- Will
P. S.: about those notes...
what do you call them in a CD package?
jacket notes?
liner notes?
box notes?
I won't be able to sleep tonight...

No need to worry about tape hiss: Moonscapes is a digital recording.
There is NO background noise. This is one of the clearest CDs I own.

144.8 | | ORPHAN::WINALSKI | | Wed Jul 03 1985 17:41 | 7 |
| I have the SWITCHED-ON BACH CD. This is remastered from analog, but the
sound is very clean with little hiss evident. The performances are the same
as on the LP, of course.
Does anybody know if A CLOCKWORK ORANGE is out on CD yet?

144.10 | | AKOV68::BOYAJIAN | | Fri Jul 05 1985 11:54 | 9 |
| The question is which album? There are two --- the "official" soundtrack
for the movie and WALTER CARLOS' MUSIC FROM A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. They are
two different albums (I have them both on different sides of a cassette).
The latter has some things that never made it into the film or were redone
for the film to make them sound a little less electronic.

P.S. Incidentally, my preference is for the latter.

| The one I'm asking about is WALTER CARLOS'S MUSIC FROM A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.
Among other things, it has the complete version of "Timesteps."

| "The Green CD Catalog", produced by Digital Audio, lists "A Clockwork
Orange: Original Soundtrack", Warner Bros. 02573-2. The only other obvious
Carlos entry is Digital Moonscapes (CBS Masterworks MK39340). The catalog
seems to be current as of about February.

| The one I have is the ``Original Soundtrack''. I have heard the other
album but forgot about it until .10 reminded me about it.
Re: .12
How can I get hold of the `Green CD list', how much does is cost,
and how good is it?

| You can get the Green CD Catalog free by subscribing to Digital Audio, or
you can subscribe to the catalog (and updates, presumeably) itself. The
price listed for the catalog, was I believe, $4. Pick up any issue of
Digital Audio for info.
As for the quality, I can't say. It lists about 2200 titles, by general
category (Pop/Rock, Jazz, Classical, Sound Track, etc.), and then alphabetical
by artist. It gives the title, label and catalog number for each. It also
includes mini "reviews" of 25 "recommended" discs (a matter of taste, I
maintain), and of a few artists. I wouldn't know how to evaluate it except
by seeing if there were large numbers of errors or omissions, something I
don't have the resources to do. It did seem reasonably accurate and complete
as best as I could tell. Its best use is probably to see if your favorite
album is out on CD, which is how I used it for this note.

| re:.8
I picked up SWITCHED-ON BACH on Saturday, and I noticed some hiss.
(In comparison, I also picked up a copy of STRANGE DAYS by The Doors, which
doesn't claim to be digitally remastered, and I noticed no hiss on that.)
One interesting thing I noticed about SWITCHED-ON BACH, though, was that
the sleeve on the CD was altered to say "Wendy" instead of "Walter".

| re:.6
Since it's called a "jewel box", I guess that makes the notes "gems" or perhaps
"pearls of wisdom"? (sorry)
re:.15
I noticed the more recent releases of the S.O.B. LP have "Wendy" instead of
"Walter", too.

144.17 | Brandenburgs | AKOV75::BOYAJIAN | In the d|i|g|i|t|a|l mood | Thu Jul 02 1987 05:49 | 13 |
| In Newbury Comics (Harvard Sq.) yesterday, I saw two CD's
(individually packaged, rather than a double-CD) of Carlos'
SWITCHED ON BRANDENBURGS. Volume 1 has the first three,
Volume 2 has the second three. Each disc is filled up with
some other Bach pieces, such as excerpts from "the Notebook
of Anna Magdelena Bach". I haven't picked them up yet, so I
can't report on how they sound.
Checking the July/August Green catalog that I picked up the
other week, I see that they are listed there, but I managed
to miss them.

144.18 | Switched on Brandenburgs Volume 1 | VINO::GSCOTT | Greg Scott | Thu Jul 02 1987 11:10 | 8 |
| I picked up _Switched on Brandenburgs Volume 1_ during the Leachmere CD
sale. There are "bonus tracks" besides the first 3 Brandenburgs. The
sound and performance is better than _Switched on Bach_. In particular
the textures of the sound are a lot more varied. I plan on getting
Volume 2 soon (and I wish I would have gotten it last weekend during
the sale).

144.19 | V1 and V2 of Brandenburgs are GOOD! | CTHULU::YERAZUNIS | VAXstation Repo Man | Thu Jul 02 1987 15:45 | 10 |
| I have V1 and V2. Well worth it.
By the way, the performances are NOT copies of previous work, so
if you already have Switched-On Bach, you won't be duplicating anything
by buying them...
Other than the fact that they are CBS, you definitely should get
these.

144.21 | A Clockwork Orange -- a horrorshow disk | ISWISS::SALLOWAY | | Fri Nov 11 1988 13:36 | 7 |
| This CD was released for a limited time, until it was discovered
that the company did not own the rights. It was quickly withdrawn,
and copies out there are going for over $100. I heard it was to
be released again legally, but haven't seen it anywhere yet.

Yankovic, "Peter and the Wolf/Carnival of the Animals, Part II",
reviewed in another note. Wonderful!
