1355.0. "Dancing in the Street" by CHEFS::FIDDLER_M (The sense of being dulls my mind) Tue Jul 02 1996 10:12

Anyone else been watching 'Dancing in the Street'?

I've been enjoying it. I guess you have to make allowances for the
sheer volume of material to be covered - not everything gets mentioned
    - but I'm really looking forward to the episodes on the late
    sixties/seventies/eighties.

Saturdays show had some interesting stuff. I've never been into Dylan
at all, but they had footage of him from 66 when he first went
electric, and he was making some interesting noises. All scratchy
guitars and cheesey organ (and who doesnt love a cheesey organ?).
Anyone know if there are any live albums from this period?
Gives more fuel to Grahams theory about all recent music having been
done before in the sixties (cont page 93...).

Mike, there are some live recordings available from this period,
unfortunately you'll need to buy one or moree of Dylan's boxed sets to
get them - such as 'Biograph' or 'Rarities' - I'll check out what's on
each for you if you like.

I particulary like the idea that Seger was going cut through the cables
with an axe - mr peace indeed !

oh, and wait 'til we get to the one that includes "The 'Dead" (if they
don't get a program on their own) the sort of things they were doing
with lights before any special equipment had been designed or built was
amazing - it'll make you realize how under utilised our OH projectors
    are !

Just caught up with last saturdays episode - fascinating stuff. Wish I
had bothered to tape n keep all of them.

Highlight of this weeks show - an excerpt from a 1958 TV talent show,
featuring two very young boys playing skiffle guitar, one of whom was
    James Page...

When asked 'what do you want to do when you leave school?', he replied:

'I want to do biological research'.

I nearly fell off my chair with laughter. I suppose he sort of
    achieved his aim...

I really hope that you peeps are watching this series, it just gets
better. Last saturdays dealt with the the Velvet Underground, Iggy,
Bowie, touched on Glam. ...fascinating stuff. My only complaint is
that this weeks episode (number 8) deals with Punk, which means only
two episodes to cover the next 16 years. There ought to be a ten
episode series on what has happened since 1970...with one episode
devoted to me interviewing David Gedge.

And I know that we moan about hype and self-promotion, but KISS had it
perfect 20 years ago (cont. next Graham Stone note...;-) ).

1355.7What *exactly* happened after punk that needs much time?CHEFS::CROSSAIt's getting better all the timeWed Jul 31 1996 11:007
As you say the series is getting better (in my opinion) as it cathes up
to the present but the biggest problem with all the episodes so far has
been large jumps/gaps due to the amount of time/info they have to cram
    in. All entertaining stuff though!

Err...lots happened after punk!!!! IMHO anyway....

The rise of the indie ethic, thru C86, Madchester, shoegazing. The
dance culture, rap, World music, re-energising of Jazz, Seattle stuff,
the impact of CDs on musical culture, I could dribble on...

I think the last 15/16 years have seen some of the most
interesting/exciting musical developments of all. (Sorry Graham!).

No need to apologise, I agree totally ! Very little of it gets played
on the Radio though and it's difficult to find in record shops, apart
from that we've never had it so good %^)

    G.

BTW. Has anyone got a tape of Dancin' in the street with The Dead on it
    ?
I returned from a few days holiday to find our VCR stopped recording
after the first 5 mins - I nearly got as far as the window with it, but
the mains lead held me back %^/

I agree - finding stuff is the hard part...

I may have the episode with the Dead, let me check tonight. Was it the
    one shown before last saturdays?

    Anything interesting happening out there?

How mad is Lee Perry? OK, the man is a genius but he is BARKING!!!
He rather proves the bit about the fine line between genius and
    madness.

1355.15What is next weeks about? Normally they say after but......CHEFS::CROSSAHere's 10pMon Aug 05 1996 12:307
Well there is still a lot of ground to cover but as I said there are a
few gaps in the programmes so time can be jumped. As it is a world
music programme instead of UK based it seems to be hard to be very
concise (like the Pete Frame Family Trees programmes).

I think next week is about the development of funk - James Brown,
    Clinton, etc.

I have no idea where that will lead. I thought that tacking Nirvana on
to the end of ther Punk show, almost as an afterthought, was a bit
    much...

The videos were advertised, i will go and investigate this lunchtime...

    ratings in the US.

Fair point Mike, especially as there was no mention of bands like Sonic
Youth. What about the New York Dolls, I cannot remember them getting a
mention (even McLaren gave a very shortened version of events)

Yes - the NYD were mentioned only in passing, and I would still like to
know more about the growth of Punk in the UK - I refuse to believe that
it was an American invention and that Mclaren imported it...

Well the Patti Smith group, the Dolls and even the Ramones predated the
UK stuff so maybe it is true. Not forgetting the MC5 and Iggy and the
    Stooges of course.

This is the problem Graham, too much ground to cover - even the Iggy
footage was a little limited last week (and it was 'The Passenger'
primarily!) Have you seen the Nike ad using Search and Destroy...not
the music you would imagine them going with!
1355.24CHEFS::FIDDLER_MThe sense of being dulls my mindTue Aug 06 1996 14:1011
Just checked out the video tapes of this show - they have one episode
    per tape, for 12.99. Hmmm....

There are only two shows left - next weeks is about funk, the week
after is titled 'Planet Rock', and seems to be about what happened to
dance music in the mid eighties.

I guess I will have to wait for the phone call for me to go along and
make the definitve progs about what went on after that...
