Well I beg to disagree, much as this track might be an acquired taste
it is certainly not "toilet" (Anyone who likes take that as much as
Andrea does would certainly find it an experience though). It's very
much like "poison" but with a slightly less hip-hop egde to it and a
bit more of a dancy feel than their other efforts in this vain. It is
indeed Keith's first stab at vocals, and although he's no Otis Redding
he certainly does the necessary. I like this single. Fabulous to
drive to.
I predict an album release within three months.

| Having been a bit of a fan since the 'Music for the Jilted Generation',
i.e. not very long, I am mightily impressed with the new effort. I
think that Liam Howlett has managed to get away from the rather picky
and elitist dance scene and is achieving his aim of attracting a more
'rock/lager' type audience. Firestarter and Underworld's Born Slippy
(as heard on Trainspotting soundtrack) are 2 of the most exciting and
up for it dance records I have heard for ages.

Music For The Jilted Generation is an excellent album, for
dancing/'chillin/driving/whatever. A nice variety of styles, from big
hip-hop drums (poison), crunchy loud guitars (Their Law (a
collaboration with PWEI)), and skankin' dub type stuff (Narcotic
Suite). All in all an excellent listen, best served loud.

'The Prodigy' is great. I can see why some people wouldn't like it

The chart show do tend to "censor" vidoes that they consider to be a
little hardcore for the general public and tend to stick to bubblegum
"pop" records and lots of that lovely "swing" stuff (gak!).
I've noticed that the dance chart gets a very brief airing when they do
see fit to show it.
|
1344.44 | Chart Show? | WOTVAX::DAVIESG | Guy Davies | Wed Apr 10 1996 14:50 | 32 |
| Interesting point on the Chart Show, I thought that all the safe "pop"
and the very lovely "swingbeat" (Warren G, Yee Hah), was what packed
the dance chart. When I watched this programme, it was always the Rock
chart that never got a fair hearing (If they had to show something from
here it was always some terrible power ballad, Mr.Big anyone?). The
dance chart always seemed to be virtually the same to the top ten
anyway, has the programme been reorganised so that the dance chart has
become more underground/hardcore? I must admit that I thought the
Prodigy would turn up in the Indie chart, after all they're becomming a
cross-over band making all sorts of music (the days of "Charly" are
long gone), like PWEI or The Shamen.
I'd like to know if this has happened and what does it mean for the
Indie and Rock charts? Could it be that the Chart Show has become worth
watching.
Quick Dream Sequence:-
Dance chart = Prodigy, Leftfield, Aphex Twin, Chemical
Brothers, Bjork; Indie chart = Rocket From The Crypt, Fluffy, Powder, Ocean
Colour Scene, Sleeper, Catatonia; Rock Chart = Terrorvision, White
Zombie, Paradise Lost, Cathedral, Down, Letters To Cleo; and Hawkwind
appear in all 3 charts at once - life could be so wonderful!
Wakes Up again!
Back to the note - Prodigy get my vote.
Firestarter is the best number one for ages and has managed to stay
ther for 3 weeks, showing that unlike most other decent chart toppers
their fan base is quite considerable!
An earlier note said that numerous complaints had been received over
Kieth's body piercing, so beautifully shown off in the video! Surely no
one is so sad as to be shocked/revolted by that!? Discuss!

| Guy,
I must have been having the same dream the other night as I fell of the
sofa when Rocket From The Crypt did in fact appear on screen, and a
sizeable chunk of the vid was aired. I think they showed the last
singles vid as well.
Ref Why show more of one chart than the other? I think anyone who has
preference for rock/indie/dance could say that they never show enough
from "their" fave music. The only chart that seems to have more airplay
is the dance chart as there is more of that in the noraml top 10. Like
you said basically. Sometimes their definition of dance/indie is
dubious to say the least, in the case of the rock chart anything seems
to count as long as it is a ballad by Bon Jovi, or some lightweight
version of that!!!
On the whole I think the Chart Show has to cover a broad range and does a
pretty good job of it. Recording it and watching with use of the fast
forward button is a good idea though!!!

| Stretch,
Couldn't agree more.
In passing, "Noisy Mothers" (and its precursor "Raw Power") was my
favourate TV programme, what has become of it?
Any programme which introduces you to the joys of Sugar Ray ("Mean
Machine, Mean Machine, it's long, it's slick, it's olive green!"),
Letters To Cleo and Stone Temple Pilots deserves never to be taken off
the air!
The Beat was quite good, apart from the fact that I never trusted that
Gary Crowley. He used to be a local DJ where I grew up, who
played Dance music and nothing else.
Gas Tank was pretty good (especially John Entwistle rubbishing his
wife, oh how we laughed when she sued him!) and Revolver had lots to
recommend it as well. However, Noisy Mothers has always had the widest
musical base (even saw the Chemical Brothers on there!), so gets my
vote.

Returning to the chart show (just for a little while, promise), I
notice that the dance chart appears to be populated with some of the
more underground acts lately with the chemicals bro's and leftfield
heading up the pack. The only problem here is that when they do show
the dance chart, it's usuaklly a very small snippet of everything
unless it's particularly "kiddie friendly" (if you'll pardon the
expression) and then that's your lot. I agree that they do a good job
of showing a wide range of styles and tastes but they do seem to err on
the side of a teenage audience. Maybe that has something to do with
the timeslot.

I can't dance, and I hate driving, but I still think that Firestarter is
grate; I was never really into `industrial' music, until a friend got me into
Nine Inch Nails (check out Pretty Hate Machine, it's excellent!)
I see that the Mail on Sunday is targetting this record for its latest media
coup, `Ban This Evil Record Now' style thing (I believe that was the headline,
anyway) I always knew that journalists liked to broadcast their ignorance and
stupidity far and wide, and this is just another example. I haven't yet
decided if they're stupid because they can't see beyond the song's title, or
because they expect the general public to be gullable enough to believe them.

Sunday rag reported this weekend that the parents of the female
firefighter that lost her life fighting a fire (sorry - can't
remember her name), are incensed at the release of a single
promoting arson. They have called the single 'Firestarter' - by
the Rave band Prodigy - bad taste, and are angry at the BBC and
the likes for giving it air play on radio and television.
The paper reported that although most of the lyrics are
uncomprehensible, the words "Firestarter" & "Twisted Firestarter"
can be clearly heard.
The parents state that the single could have adverse affects on
young people. (The single cover, which has a granny holding a
molotov cocktail, has not gone down well neither).
The Prodigy have stated that the single is not associated with
arson.

bands has just released a record called "Firestarter". Aren't you
outraged?'
Relative: `Er, I dunno, I haven't heard it, but-'
Journalist: `It's got a picture of a molotov cocktail on the front. It's
disgraceful and evil and should be banned, shouldn't it?'
Relative: `I'm not sure, I suppose-'
Journalist: `See, there you have it, the relatives of people killed by
arsonists are outraged by this evil filth and say it should be
banned! Excuse me, I'll just take a really sentimental picture and
then I can get loads of money by selling this story.'
