| Well, I'm not FIDDLER_M, yet I've heard about her. Ruby is actually Leslie
Rankine, former singer with London proto-grunge band Silverfish, gone solo
(or sort of). I read somewhere she has now relocated to the US, New Orleans
if I remember correctly. Excellent first single 'Paraffin' got some airplay
over here, same style indeed as Portishead.

I read somewhere that Silverfish (or at least Lesley Rankine) were Scottish...
did I read it wrong?

| Oh yeah, back on topic, I remember seeing her/them (whatever the Ruby tag
references!) on Later with Jools Holland a few months ago. Sounded a bit like
Portishead crossed with PJ Harvey (is that what the basenoter said? Can't
remember, but I thought that at the time, anyway) She also had the most
hideous pair of shoes I've ever seen!
Chris.

| Lesley is indeed Scottish and extremely scary she is too, The other
members of Silverfish were indeed from around London.
'proto-grunge' mmmm not really, more plain punk.
Weren't my cup of tea musically, but very nice people all the same.
Paraffin...alright I suppose.

I recall them as a complete rip-off of early Nirvana. No big fuss when the
band called it quits. No crowd of despaired teenagers, no greatest hits
all over the shops, no heavy rotation toilet video. Nice people indeed.

| Help! OK they were hardcore then, but NOT a rip off of early Nirvana.

| I don't want this to turn into yet another Nirvana discussion, but I feel that
they were seriously overrated and far less original than people often claimed.
Their overall sound was nothing new, and some of the songs were just blatant
ripoffs (ie their almost identical copy of Killing Joke's `80s', whatever they
called it)
Chris.

| I never said they were any good, caterwauling is too good a word for
the noise created.

| Thanks for the replys. I'll have to look for some Silverfish CD's.
Ruby's CD includes a picture, her shoes are circa '75 platforms, they
are rather hideous - maybe she only has one pair of shoes. Why or how is
Ms. Rankine "scary?"
cheers,

| Fred,
>> Why or how is
Ms. Rankine "scary?"
Her tendancies towards violent, drunken outbursts did little to help
her cause with most journos. Punters as well I believe.
Stretch.
