| Yup - certainly a fan here...looking forward to the tv series, although
word on the first episode is thats its pretty much a straightforward
story with all the interesting/grimy bits removed.
Have you ever read 'Revolution in the Head' by Ian McDonald? Its
recently been published in paperback, and is a good analysis of the
Beatles song by song. Its well worth reading....
Revolver is probably my fave album, followed by Abbey Road.

| It would be a shame if they "sanitised" the Berlin and Liverpool
period..but totaly predictable. The mag said following the TV series,
a full video set containing 6 extra hours of footage would be
available..maybe that would be a bit more "grimy"...
I haven't read that..the last book I read was a book by Lennons' mate, a
journalist (can't remember his name) about the last five years of his life
leading up to his death..don't know how accurate it was but it painted
a different picture than you would imagine..
Fave albums are Magical Mystery Tour (probably cause when I was
"touring in a band man.." that was the only tape played on the bus, and
it sort of grew..Revolver -though i don't actually have that one- only
heard it..and Sgt Pepper which I do own. I much prefer the later stuff
or the "drug phase" early Beatles is fun but I couldn't really sit
down and listen to it..

| Count me in too ! My fave's are Revolver, Sgt Pepper and sometimes
"The White Album"...
I do like the early 'pop song' stuff too, the new wave of British pop
bands could certainly learn a thing or two about song writing from
listening to them - Oasis excepted of course, as they obviously own all
of the Beatles back catalogue %^;

"Free as a bird" not bad as a song, the video is even more well-done, you
find a lot of Beatles' stuff to be reminished with.
But I think "Free" more as a monument of them together than anything
else. "Free" is sentimental in any sense.

Something along the lines of "If it was not for the Beatles pop music
would not have evolved into what it is today. Now wether that is a good
thing or a bad thing I cannot say, although you can't blame them for
Phil Collins !!" Good one Jarvis !!
As for 'Free as a bird'. Bound to be a huge hit, especially with the
Reebok(Man Utd) style video. A bit bland for my tastes though. Was this
the reworked track off the 'Imagine' vid ??

| i don't think it was the reworked track, that one is called Real Love,
nice accoustic version on the Imagine soundtrack..saw the vid last
night and want to watch it again, the song is catching on with me
now..It's a pity Chris Evans forgets that some people are on a tube to
work by 7.40 so can't stck around long enough for him to make up his
mind...Thought last nights programme - now installed on vid was a bit
of fun and a prelude to the real one.(I hope)

Last week I watched Beatles' Anthology I video which included in it
the "Free as a bird" video.
Last night I watched Beatles' Anthology II video which included in it
the "Real Love" video. I have both listened to the original acoustic
version of "Real" in the "Imagine" video and this new Beatles' remake,
both are excellent in their own context but can present a totally different
feel and yet keeping its original spirit.
Really the best video on their history, and particularly those new
songs are sured Beatles' classic ballads, I don't have any doubt the
new songs will go straight to the top !
I will say good-bye to the 90's Rap-talk, and go back to the classic of
all time.
Next week I will take a look at Anthology III.

I thought the 'Anthology' prog was pretty tedious, but I guess there
is now at least one complete generation who never even knew the
Beatles. It was quite some time ago that I heard a kid say to his
friend "Did you know Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings".
I thought the 'All you need is ca$h' prog was much better and probably
much closer to the truth than the glossy Anthology will ever get.
As for the single, Free as a bird, I think it's cr*p... though I expect
with the amount of hype around it can't fail to get to number 1.

Last night was the episode I was looking forward to most, as the
revolver/Sgt. Pepper period is my favourite Beatles stuff. the lack of
detail and glossing over of events seems almost unbelievable, it feels
like it's possible to watch an hour on The Beatles which is almost
content free. Even with an extra 20 minutes per episode it won't
improve much unless they are saving all the interesting stuff to
encourage video sales.
Re:- 'Hello Goodbye' , I was wondering if they were taking the
mickey out of themselves, obviously naively ignoring the distinct
possibility that they were out of their boxes at the time !

| Well, I seemed to have got the hang of this hint-dropping thing - thanks,
mostly, to sending out various notes from here, I got both the CD AND the
Macdonald book for Christmas! They're incompatible of course, (and all the
better for that) as the book only talks about the EMI releases which the CD
doesn't have.
I was surprisingly impressed with Anthology 1. There's very little chat - no
attempt at reproducing the 'wacky humour'. Most of the outtakes are very
similar to the final versions, though my favourite bit is an early take of
"I'll Be Back" (from Hard Day's Night) which John tries to sing in waltz-time,
fails, so they try it again in 4/4.
The live stuff's suitably raw, and useful to have as most people didn't see
them live, and those who did certainly didn't hear them! Again, the radio and
TV recordings are pretty close to the records.
Not sure who I'd recommend it to - probably just the fanatics. Anyone who
doesn't know what the early fuss was about should get the early albums.
