Barry, when I first read your note, I wondered why you hadn't put it in
the Hawkwind Topic - then I did DIR/TIT=Hawk, and guess what - this is
it. Amazing, all these years and no topic ...
Anyway, Hawkwind usually play the Brixton Academy sometime around
Crimble/New Year - but I've just checked the NME and there's nothing
advertised, so best keep your ear to the ground I suppose.
Nik Turners Hawkwind, aren't the official Hawkwind BTW - Dave Brock and
Nik don't get on these days - the live album you have ('The Business
Trip') is Dave Brock's real Hawkwind, from their recent tour(s).
I saw Nik Turners 'Space Ritual 1994' aka Nik Turners Hawkwind, play at
Glastonbury this year - sometine around 2am in the morning, in a small
Marque in the Green Technologies area. They used a PA & lighting rig
powered completely by Batteries which had been charged by Wind generators
and Solar Panels during the day. Sort of added to the spirit of the Green
Field some how, absolutely awesome performance, culminating in an acoustic
version of Silver Machine on drums and Saxophone after the power finally
dried up and the PA failed....
If I hear of any gigs between now and New Year, I'll post a note here.

| Hi Graham,
Yep, no Hawkwind note until now....well thats one of the world's
wrongs righted...and for our next trick...Bosnia?
Its a shame Nik Turner and Dave Brock don't get on (I think that is
putting it mildly) as "You Shouldn't Do That" from RoadHawks album
ranks as one of my all time favourite Hawkwind "songs". There is a
version of this on "The Business Trip" by the way.
I'll keep an ear to the ground and post any news here. Last year
it wasn't the Academy but the Brixton Fridge that they used. I may call
up on the off chance.
Cheers,
Barry.

| re tours,
Hawkwind should be doing a short UK tour around March '95ish, and a longer
one sometime around autumn. Given the 'Wind's previous ability to stick
to schedules, take this with a pinch of salt!
For more Hawkwind info, you can subscribe to the Hawkwind/BOC mailing
list; send Ben Cohen a message at [email protected], and the
mail messages should come rolling in (I should say `flooding', I haven't
looked in my Hawkwind mailbox for a fortnight until today, and there were
over 1200 new messages. Aargh!)

1265.8 | New tour dates | WOTVAX::DAVIESG | Guy Davies | Tue Oct 10 1995 18:51 | 23 |
| Just in case anyone is interested, the mighty Hawkwind are out on tour
now.
I'll be seeing 'em in Lancaster (The Sugarhouse) this Friday (13
October), if my bike gets me there! And if that falls through I've
already got tickets for the Manchester Academy on the following
Monday (16 October).
I would list all the dates, but I only found this conference today so I
wasn't prepared for sharing this important information!
Unfortunately I'm off on holiday now (so I can catch these gigs!), but
if there are any dates later on (like November) I'll try and post them
in here.
Last time I saw Hawkwind was in July at the Roch'n'Blues Custom Bike
show. They were excellent. Much better than in recent years when
they've toured as a 3-piece, as the band were supplemented by the old
Tubilah Dog lead guitarist (whose name escapes me) and a lead singer, a
complete nutter who I'd never seen before. Set included ROBOT, RIGHT TO
DECIDE, SHOULDN'T DO THAT and DEATHTRAP (Yippie!!!), so these gigs
should be good. However, if iys back to noodly synth nonsence I'll be
well annoyed.
Might put a note in describing the gigs, depends if anyone responds to
this really!

| Glad to hear they've got their act together, I was pretty disappointed
with IITBOTFTBD, although the followup live album was good. The live
gigs at the time were a bit of an anticlimax compared with the line
up of the early '90s (Brock/Wishart/Davey/Bainbridge/Chadwick/House),
which was also slightly embarrasing for me as the three piece was the
first time I'd managed to drag my sister out to see a decent band play
live!
Last time I heard, the lead singer was one Mr Bastard (real name Tree!)
although I haven't seen them for quite some time now, and have about
2MB of catching up to do on my mailbox for the Hawkwind mailing list!

I got the Hawkzine mailshot stuff recently, listing all the tour dates
and band news, also a mail order list which included an 8-track version
of an early album ! The Promotional postcard I got a month or so back now
makes sense, it was to promote the new album - although there was no
mention of Hawkwind on it, just a picture of some weird alien thing and
the word 'Alien' - called 'Alien 4' (I think).
I should have been going to see them at Wolverhampton with a busload of
friends form Leek, but it clashes with the Stoke Beer Festival which I had
a prior commitment to, so I'll haave to try and catch them later - perhaps
at the Brixton Academy all-nighter with RDF, amongst others.
I do remember they're playing in Portsmouth after Wolverhampton and
also the Melkweg in Amsterdam and somewhere in Belgium. Come to think
of it, a w/e in Amsterdam, seeing the band wouldn't be such a bad idea!

I've just read the rest of Hawknews :-
Support for the tour are 'Optic Eye' (or is this the light show ?) and
'Capt. Rizz+ & Tribe' (mini-album 'Manifesto' out on Hawkwinds
Emergency Broadcast System).
the all-nighter at Brixton includes 'Porcupine Tree', 'RDF' (feel that
Bass !), 'Electrik Groove Temple', 'Salt Tank' and 'Sons of Arqa', with
more to be added.
The tour and album endorse the 'Tibet Support Group' as did the track
'Tibet is Not China Part 1 & 2' from 'It is the Business of the Future
to be Dangerous'.
Oh, for anyone with an 8-track player, there's a version of the superb

1265.16 | Manchester Academy - 16th October 1995 | WOTVAX::DAVIESG | Guy Davies | Tue Oct 17 1995 19:04 | 41 |
| Seeing as my notes generated such activity I thought I'd put a report
in on how the gig went.
Didn't make Lancaster as I was up a mountain in Wales instead, so it
was the Manchester Acadmey, an annex to the University student union
with bars (probably holds up to 2,500), which hosted my 52nd Hawkwind
gig.
I missed Optic Eye (so can't comment on them), but Capt.Rizz were very
poor, a sort of funky/crusty free festival outfit, but, with no
standout material.
Hawkwind were a four piece for this gig, the same line up bar the
Tubilah Dog guitarist, that I saw at the Rock'n'Blues Custom Bike Show.
The lead singer is Ron Tree (real name?), and he's an excellent front
man, the spirit of Nik Turner has infested this man and given Hawkwind
a much needed boost!
They opened up with "Deathtrap", followed by "Golden Void", "Wind of
Change" and "Robot". Then went into a lot of new stuff, presumably off
this Aliens LP (anyone got any details on this one, like what label,
distribution, number etc). Finished off with "Lord of Light", which I
had never seen them do live (made my night), "Silver Machine" and
"Hashish I Shaba" - brilliant.
There was the usual selection of dancers, fire-eaters and light show
with a strange robotic stage prop. So the usual full-on experience,
they're far more than a rock'n'roll band and remain one of the best
live acts in the world!
In case anyone is interested the remaining dates are as follows:-
Tue 17th - CIRENCESTER Corn Exchange
Wed 18th - CARDIFF St.David's Hall
Thu 19th - BRISTOL Colston Hall
Fri 20th - WOLVERHAMPTON Civic Hall (Crap Venue!)
Sat 21st - LONDON Brixton Academy (Excellent Venue!)
Mon 23rd - PORTSMOUTH Guild Hall
Tue 24th - HASTINGS Pier (Excellent Venue!)
If anyone else sees them on this tour I'd be interested to hear what
you thought of them.

Re:- Hawkwind history :- how long have you got ?
Years ago, Sounds - the music paper - used to do centre page spread family
trees of bands. I'm not sure, but I think the Hawkwind one was done over
two weeks coz it was so big (in the late 70's).
A few bands which spring to mind are Motorhead (Lemmy), Pink Fairies
(Twink + others), Gong (Tim Blake), Tubilah Dog, Nik Turners Inner City
Unit/Fabulous All stars/Space Ritual, Huw Llloyd Langton Group, Ginger
Bakers various bits and pieces..etc, etc
The Band had two drummers in the early daze (as did the Pink Fairies)
because they nearly always played on the same bill as the 'Fairies. The
drummers of both bands were the most reliable at turning up for gigs,
so they usually set up both kits, and both drummers played with both
bands !
G.
|
1265.24 | | CBHVAX::CBH | Lager Lout | Wed Oct 18 1995 14:33 | 6 |
| They also had two drummers in the mid - late '70s, after Simon King broke
his ribs playing football. They had to get in a replacement (can't remember
his name), who stayed on when Simon returned. Sounded quite effective on
tracks like PXR5.

1265.27 | But is it Hawkwind? | WOTVAX::DAVIESG | Guy Davies | Wed Oct 18 1995 18:30 | 30 |
| Excellent thanks for the info, is the album actually released under the
Hawkwind banner? I ask this because I found a "new" Dave Brock solo
album in a record shop at the end of last week, featuring a track
called "Bosnia", there was very little information on the sleeve, so
I'm wondering if the two could be related!
If its under the Hawkwind label it is already out in the shops because
Dave Brock actually asked the crowd at Monday's gig what they thought
of the new album! I was bemused at this point 'cause I didn't know
there was one out!
By the way, the Hawklords LP was what first got me into all things
Hawkwind, I heard "Only the Dead Dreams of a Cold War Kid" on the Annie
Nightingale show. Meant a lot at the time! Still a fine record
especially "25 Years" and "Flying Doctor".
If I get time I'll put in a full discography and roll call for Hawkwind,
but this would take some compiling!
Pink Fairies drummers were Twink (ex-Tomorrow, Pretty Things and
Deviants) and Russell Hunter (ex-Deviants). Hawkwind's were initially
Terry Ollis and Simon King (1972ish) and the Simon King and Alan Powell
(or Adrian Shaw - my memory's going!), (1977-9).
Should future references to the Pink Fairies/Deviants/Tomorrow/Pretty
Things/Inner City Unit etc remain in this conference?

Alien 4 is a Hawkwind album. The Brock album is "his first since 'agents
of chaos' (1988). It's called 'Strange trips and pipe dreams'. The 13
track album mixes Brocks distinctive folksy vocals and blues guitar
with his taste for the electronic wizardry. Intelligent sampling added
to this brew, makes the album a perfect cerebral trip which Brock is
famous for.
For those of you who are bored with today's CD packaging (this must be
aimed at me folks !) The Emergency Broadcast System have brought out
yet another imaginative design to satisfy the visual senses."
Quote from the EBS Press release, August 1995.
The Pink Fairies/Hawkwind drummers thing, was before either band
recorded anything - Hawkwind were in fact 'Band X' at the time I think.
BTW, I'm not quite old enough to know all of this 'first hand' as it
were, I got the info from an old (as in some time ago) colleague who
used to see both bands regularly in London Pubs. Of course He could
have been wrong about the drummers, in that they may have just used
the same two kits...
BTW. another snippet from the Press release "...Dabe Brock is to
Hawkwind what George Clinton is to Funkadelic; both are the anchor
men..."

Park, if I remember correctly, besides a card shop and hardware centre!
There is also a WH Smith type record shop in the same street opposite
the shopping centre (where you can't buy anything decent or on vinyl!).
Does this help!

i'm home.

| Listened to Nik Turner's "Past and Future" album last night....really
good. Sounds like Hawkwind 20 years ago....he really likes to cover the
Robert Calvert tunes. Apparently he has Del Detmar (or is it Dik Mik)
on Electric Axe!
Has anybody seen any Nik Turner albums in the shops over here? This one
was brought over from Hong Kong but I'm told its available in the US.
Also saw Hawkwind at the Guildford Civic Hall on the 23rd June. They
let me in for free! (always sounds better when its free...) I arrived
at 9:10pm to be told that the box office was shut and I couldn't get in
but the bouncers just said walk in....
They have a very good line up with Ron Tree and it was a visual concert
with the fire-jugglers (who set light to the stage briefly) and the
erotic dancers..... :) There was also a belly dancer that appeared at
one stage but she looked like Alan Davey's mum.
Hawkwind are headlining at the Summer Daze festival in Devon on the
26th July.....I think the current set up is well worth the 10 quid
entry. Also, they are appearing at the "Free Wheels" festival in
Carnac, Brittany some time soon. This could be a good festival if it
set near to the standing stones (Carnac is like a huge Avebury....).
Pass the mushrooms...

| Barry,
when you say 'over here' do you mean 'over here' in the UK ? if so you
should be able to get Nik's stuff just about anywhere, if you can't
try Mike Lloyd Music in Wolves,Stafford, Newcastle (UL) or Hanley.

| I think there somw stuff on Langtree Farm off http://www.hawkwind.com,
looks very good. However, the 600 mile round trip doesn't appeal. Lets
hope they play up north soon!
Last time I was in a record shop I saw Nik Turner's "California
Brainstorm" double CD set. This has the wonderful DikMik playing on it!
Should be available everywhere.
