re-1 It is The Wonderstuffs last ever gig for certain. There is one EP of new material due, possible 'best of' and live lps, and thats it. Unbearable isn't it? Mikef

Anyone going to Phoenix 1995? I'm going on Saturday because Friday and Sunday feature no bands I particulary want to see except, for Velvet Crush (first on Friday) Saturday on the other hand, has got EMF, and the double metal onslaught of Bodycount and the fantastic Faith No More. Sad term isn't it...... METAL...... YUKK YUK YUK YUK. Always reminds me of Spotty poodle perm kids with Bleached Kiku stretch jeans and white baseball boots with Whitesnake t shirts on. On the subject of The Pheonix Festival if anyone does go on the Friday try to check out JayPac 'cos my mate's drumming for them. Having attended said festival on Saturday, I will now attempt to give a quick review of the bands playing on the main stage in order of appearance.... Pitchshifter Dull, thuddy metal, all the songs sounded the same, totally out of place on the big stage. It was quite amusing when they encouraged a stage invasion, loads of people got on stage=power cut off, pitchshifter banned from all future Mean Fiddler events/venues. Shootyz Groove Not bad easy to listen to, if deriviative hip hop types. Gallon Drunk Unlistenable. A lot of people on stage does not an interesting set make, I have never undstood how this band have become so popular, must really get the pints in when music journalists are around. (see also Nick Cave) EMF Excellent return to form, best I have seen them play in a long time. Free from the shackles of record company contractural obligation, they played an up set filled with all the hits and the catchier stuff from the last two albums. They did play I'm a Believer sans Vic and Bob but it still sounded great, as did the new extremely poppy new song. Ice T/Bodycount A 2 hour set from Ice T started with his rap incarnation and finished with the none more metal Bodycount. This was definately my highlight of the day. Ice T is an excellent showman, getting the crowd on his side straight away and performing stuff form throughout his career, one of the more articulate rap artists he kept the banter unobtrusive but amusing. The second half of his set featured the excellent Bodycount, a powerful rock band who unlike Pitchshifter and Paradise lost kept it diverse and interesting, except for the pointless 3 minute drum solo by the least technical drummer in rock step forward...Beatmaster V. Paradise Lost Yawn. Substandard dull metal. Rubbish. Terrorvision I really wanted them to be good, but they were absolutely terrible, like they weren't bothered. They played the hits which I really tried to be bothered to listen to but in the end I just didn't care. They should never be forgiven for their cover of Kraftwerk's The Model. Never again. Public Enemy Very good indeed. Having been warned that PE were light on music and heavy on waffle I approached their set with some trepidation. My fears were groundless as they put forawrd an excellent show, their music came across as powerfully as it comes across on record, playing tracks from throughout their career with real vitality. Chuck D only veered dangerously close into talking b*ll*cks once, and Flavour Flav never stopped, but that's part of his charm. I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone...but Chuck D said that Phoenix was their penultimate live perfomance anywhere, which is great shame. Faith No More This should have been the highlight but I was severely dissapointed in it all. Perhaps they have been playing stadiums for too long, but this was nowhere near as good as I've seen them. When they were on form, it gelled, otherwise they floundered around. They weren't terrible, just average. Mike Patton certainly didn't let the side down when it came to being disgusting however, choosing to urinate on stage, to the delight of the several million girls who were watching. The only highlights were an excellent 'Easy' and a brilliant cover of 'Glory Box' (honestly).

Having been last year (bowie was excellent, as were massive attack, JTQ and most of the rest, including the weather) and the year before - I have to agree Faith No More covering Glory Box was a classy moment... I heard a rumour Faith No More are headlining the main stage one night again..... Jo (who's got her Glastonbury tickets but wants to make it a double bill this year)

I don't believe it! The day after I get all the details all the headlines are how the local council is going to ban the festival!!!! Too many people turned up last year. I really don't know why councils behave like this. If they're going to ban the damn thing then why not announce it a month or two after the last one not a month or two before it when the lineup's been announced and everything booked up. I can only assume two things either someone on the council is after donations from Mean Fiddler since they probably can't afford to have it not happen or it's all a damn setup by Mean Fiddler because tickets haven't sold quite quick enough that or the local council are incompetent gits who really deserve shooting.

The council probably left it this late in order to panic the Mean Fiddler into giving them more money...I can't see it actually being cancelled. Didn't a similar thing happen with last years Reading Festival? m

Yes, but they haven't just refused them a license - they've refused to grant them the license they applied for this year which is for a 50% increase in capacity over lastt year. Perhaps if they'd applied for the same as last year first (and earlier) they'd have got it; they could then have applied for the increase later. As it is, I'm sure their revised application for 30,000 instead of 45,000 will be accpeted, but how many ofd the bands will have pulled out by then ? G.
