| 14 good things in '93:
Radiohead 'Pablo Honey' - they've got guitars, tunes and attitude.
Bjork 'Debut' - loved it to death (can't play it now!).
Slowdive 'Souvlaki' - delicately authoritative.
Sven Vth 'Accident in Paradise' - ambient stream-of-consciousness.
Smashing Pumpkins 'Siamese Dream' - makes other grunge seem a thrashy mess.
Trance Europe Express - dig those crazy beats.
Cocteau Twins '4 Calendar Caf' - music 2 die 4.
Beavis and Butthead - they're cool. He he, he he, he he he.
Radiohead at Vernier sur Rock - one day, all live music will be like this.
Carter in Fribourg - the mosher's dream.
Liz Phair - wish I was her boyfriend.
Couleur 3 radio station - what Radio 1 should be.
My new hifi - the detail! the stereo imaging! the [contd p94]
PJ Harvey - as a concept.
4 bad things in '93:
New Order 'Republic' - bring back the monarchy!
Jacko's exposure as an (alleged) child molester.
Vinyl's continuing decline.
PJ Harvey - to actually listen to.

** In the "I played them so much that if they'd been vinyl you could'a seen
through 'em" category:
Feral Pop Frenzy - Even As We Speak, as seen live at Rising Sun institute
Siamese Dream - The Smashing Pumpkins, as seen live at Brixton Academy (even
tho' the lead signers voice was COMPLETELY shot)
Down Colorful Hill - Red House Painters
Fat City - Shawn Colvin
Anything by The Blue Aeroplanes
Mezcal Head - Swervedriver, as seen supporting Curve at Brixton Academy
** In the "I can never turn the album up loud enough now I've seen them in
concert" category:
4 Non-Blondes, live somewhere or other [a '4' album which Rod failed to review]
** In the "no reasonable offers refused" category:
Jawbreaker - Bivouac ("well, they were good at the Reading festival")
Ok, so 'Star' and '4-Calendar Cafe' are also excellent, but I'd hate to be
any more unoriginal than can be avoided.

1200.13 | A few random highlights | WELCLU::GREENB | Gratuitous use of flute | Sat Dec 18 1993 12:54 | 30 |
| Late contenders for single of the year coming in right now from the
Fall and Cornershop (Readers Wives). Good singles from Sonic Youth with
sugar Kane (that was this year wasn't it?), and unlike some I liked the
Stakka Bo single. Marvellous debut efforts from Elastica and S*M*A*S*H.
Good year for, erm, cultural mixes, new marriages of different styles
etc.
One highlight of the year has definitely been actually getting to hear
stuff on XFM that I previously only read about in NME/MM. There's a
load of great stuff happening
Surprise likes of the year have been two great singles by Pet Shop
Boys, who I don't usually have a lot of time for - nice to see old gits
can make fresh sounding music, even if one was a cover.
Oh, by the way, just leave it out about Take That, OK? They are all
right - my 13-year old daughter loves them, and their songs aren't that
bad, especially compared to other recent teen acts like bros or NKOTB.
Also, through seeing her reaction to them (especially sfter going to
their Wembley show recently, when she didn't come down for about a week
afterwards) reminds me of why I got to love pop music so much at a
similar age.
Albums of the year for me - Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins and the
Auteurs.
Bob
p.s. Finally, a nod to PJ Harvey, the concept and the band.....

So most have them have been mentioned B4...
Cocteau Twins - Four calendar Cafe
Bjork - Debut
Cranes - Forever
Slowdive - Souvlaki
Philip Glass - Low Symphony
By my quick reckoning of all the previous notes, the most mentioned Lp
is the Cocteau Twins - Four calendar Cafe, and so I (unofficially)
declare it the ALBUM OF THE YEAR !!
To argue would only be admitting to an unparalled lack of taste :-)
:-) :-)
Full of Christmas cheer,

1200.21 | From the deep south | GLADYS::CRAVEN | You are a case and a half | Thu Dec 23 1993 14:51 | 30 |
| Can't believe no-one has mentioned The Breeders. From down here,
Cannonball was the song of the year, if not the decade (Christ, even my
mum likes it, and she's normally a Shostakovich freak). Last splash is
a brilliant album.
Other great albums were "star" by Belly and Part #1 of "Firepile" by
the Throwing Muses.
Best overseas act to visit Australia was Belly, although Juliana
Hatfield's support act bored me to tears. Sonic Youth/Disposable Heroes
was a great night, given the sound.
And the jangly Flying Nun tour at the Annandale was a groovy bargain -
we often get the Straitjacket Fits and the Bats, but the JPS Experience
don't come that often.
Special mention too to the Headless Chickens for their many shows,
hundreds of mixes of "Donde esta la polle" and belated album, Body
Blow.
And, at the risk of sounding perochial, the Falling Joys' "Aerial",
Died Pretty's "Trace" and Bughouse's "bardo" are all fantastic.
Worst of the year was nothing new from My Bloody Valentine or Single
Gun Theory, not to mention the Breeders cancelling their tour (but they
are coming in January).
Until '94 (when the Honeys retrospective is due out),
Peter!

| Hmmm...fave lps of the year...
Bjork, Debut. The Lemonheads, C'mon feel... Not realy a great year
for lps to be honest. Zooropa was OK.
Singles. Kingdom by Ultramarine, the post ambient folk song of the
year, to which one could do a post ambient folk dance, or my infamous
tree shuffle.
Open Up by Leftfield and Lydon, excellent boogie noises.
Ten YEars *mumble something* by Kingmaker, I think thats what it was
called. A great Stuffies style singalong indie song, to which one
could stretch ones arms to the size of a cow.
Sometime by James - the flailing arms jingly jangly single
of the year.
Feed the Tree by Belly. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Tanyaaaaaa.....
Cannonball by The Breeders.
Dull release of the year - Republic by New Order. Went down well with
the volvo and squash crowd tho.
LP that should really have been turned into a flowerpot - Dream Harder
by The waterboys. I have worshipped at the alter of Mike Scott since
the beginning, but this was a duff album. "Ohh, corn circles, they are
mysterious, and in the corn, and circular, oh yeah, like wow"... do me
a favour...
Hype of the year - rereleasing the Smiths lps for lots of money, oh
heaven knows I'm very poor now. I hated even New Order for falling
into the double CD single scam.
Grower of the year - Laid by James. I hated it at first, but now I
like it in a mellow sort of way.
Event I missed for which I deserve to be spanked with a wet
plimpsoll..New Order at Reading Festival. Why didn't I go????
Rediscovery of the year - Movement by New Order. I have really
disliked this lp for years, but I picked it up cheap on CD, and loved
it! It wears its early eighties origins on its sleeve, and doubtless
inspired early Tears for Fears (not as bad a thing as inspiring later
Tears for Fears), but is well worth digging out again.
Good news of the year - more independent noise on Radio 1. Peelie on
at a decent hour, Mark Radcliffe in the week, and thingy and whossit on
the early evening show.
Gig of the year - Julian Cope in Cambridge. Give that man a knighthood
now!!!
Well, thats about it. No songs really made me want to remove my
underwear this year. I really liked 'Stamp on their heads and chew up
their Brains' by Killer Surf Nazi Scum.
Well, Happy Crimble one and all, and good hunting in the New Year sales
at HMV.
Mikef
PS - I made up the bit about Killer Surf Nazi Scum

I'm sure that wan't '93. Anyhow, the lyric was this:
