heard three tracks . Of course they stink as do all the tracks of
Michael "the circus freak" Jackson's L.P. that I've heard.
BTW Kate has released "rocket man" as the new single .It's backed by

One doesn't actually KNOW if an L.P. is crap unless one has listened

singles etc.
I've thought of another piece of excruciating SH*TE to add to my list
from .0
"Spartacus" by the Farm.
Thay have one song -"Groovy Train" which is very good . The rest of the
L.P. is full of what amount to different "laddish" terrace anthem
versions of said song . It's quite offensive after two listens.

Apart from the two yet released singles,"On every street" is one of my

| DULLLLLLLLL (their muzak). Anyway the Dire Straits L.P. has proved to
be THE biggest sales dissapointment of 1991 so far . Only peaking at
no.12 in the states!!! It may have got to no.1 in the U.K. but only for
1 week and it's barely in the top 40 right now . Even some of the yups
are smart enough to leave this dog alone.
As for the Tom Petty L.P. , it's so limp it'd make a dog laugh.

| I've only heard one song (the single) off Bryan Adams' LP, and on the
strength of that I nominate it for the very worst of 1991. Even if the
rest of the album were Cocteaus Twins songs it would still be the worst
of 1991, just for having a Bryan Adams song on it.

released three singles so far this year and the best bit is that the

| RE: Dire Straits "On Every Street"
OK, so it was only at No.1 here in the UK for 1 week, and only topped
at No.14 in the States. It was always going to be hard to follow
Brothers In Arms wasn't it? But who cares how long it was up there?
Certainly not me.
I bought it because I happen to like Dire Straits. I appreciate
opinions and of course everyone is entitled to one, but why can't we
restrict them to quality of music rather than how well they do in the
charts? Many LP's voted as best in here didn't even do well in the
Indie charts never mind in the mainstream charts. But then, for an
Indie to do well in the mainstream charts automatically means a
sell-out doesn't it?
Who cares about what everyone else thinks.....like what YOU like.
Rant over.
Dale.

| The point about sales talk (and that was no.12 in the states) was that
a lot of Dire Straits fans (and they do have a large fan base) aren't
all that interested in the L.P.. The marketing budget for this L.P.
was huge . They even took out a mini-booklet (in conjunction with
Philips) in Q mag (hence the ONLY good review). The L.P. was hugely
exposed and initally quite a few people went out to buy it. However
everyone (nearly) seems more than a little underwhelmed by the
listening experience and thus there are a huge no. of unsold copies
still on the shelves (especially in the U.S.) . On top of it selling
badly the music is APPALLING and that's why I called it such a
dissapointment.
As per some of the L.P.s in the Best L.P's note not selling very
well, almost none of those acts have anything like the commercial
backing that Dire Straits got. This means a lot less exposure and less
bulk offers to distributers and chain shops. Radio play has to be
bought in the states (it's not offical, just the way they do business)
and UK radio play is got by "sweetening" DJ's .Most of these acts can't
afford to do this and Dire Straits can.
Also a lot of the acts mentioned are conciously trying to do
something different , push back barriers or generally do things a whole
lot better e.g. My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies , Kraftwerk and are
known as innovators. They don't write Sh*tty songs about Memphis.
Because of this they tend to attract a more demanding type of listener
as opposed to the kind who listen to Rod Stewart and are the general
targets of music-by-market-research pop.
Personally I don't care how the DIRE Straits L.P. did. It's just
that a lot of people seem to be voting with their feet on this one in
light of all the exposure and marketing that's gone on.

| You could also say that a band like Dire Straits are going to be judged
much more on their album sales than any Indie group because their present
fame arises out of previous massive sales which the industry is longing for
them to repeat. Let's face it, record company bosses don't give a toss for
anything as abstract as musical quality; they just want to see units shifted.
Dire Straits have done that in the past. If they don't do it now and in the
future they will be seen as having failed.
I only ever liked "Sultans of Swing" meself of course.

this note. Genesis and Dire Straits have been given a much harder time
in here. My note of .30 was a reply to Piers (I think) .
I certainly dont have a complex about the man as you seem to think.
This is a note set up to discuss what people think to be the worst
music of the year and thus anyone is entitled to slag a artist off. I
have NEVER slagged any of the noters off unlike Ms. from -.1 . If you
want to start a personal abuse-to-noters note then go ahead . I don't
mind your liking Bryan Adam's (if indeed you do) but that belongs in a
different note.
