939.0. "Single of '91" by YUPPY::PANES (Stuart Panes @U.S.M) Mon Nov 25 1991 14:31

  Given that we will only ,probably, be subjected to Xmas releases, does
anyone have any suggestions for "single of '91"?

939.1Not such a bad year reallyXSTACY::NBLEHEINMon Nov 25 1991 14:5822
    Well a few come to mind:

         "You got the Love " by The Source Featuring Candi Statten

         "Last Train to Trancentral " - The K.L.F.

         "Get the Message"   by Electronic

         "The Robots"      By Kraftwerk

         "Planet of Sound" by The Pixies

         "Loose Fit/Bobs yer Uncle" by The Happy Mondays

         "What Can You Do For Me ?" by Utah Saints

         "Panic" by Johhny Panic and The Bible of Dreams

      Hardly a definitive list as most of the music is fairly electronic in
    nature but sure there you go.

 Niall,

 Nice list, but if you had to pick one single, what would it be?

939.3We are programmed just to do..XSTACY::NBLEHEINMon Nov 25 1991 15:288
    It really just depends on the mood . I can narrow it down to "Last
    Train" , "You got the Love" and "The Robots".
     Well I suppose it has to be "The Robots" cos the nine minute version
    is really just so good ,either to listen or dance to. Of all the single
    releases it's the one I'm least tired of . It really is a shame that
    Kraftwerk broke up again.

                Niall
939.4DEFOE::JAMIEThunder knows all things.Mon Nov 25 1991 16:068
    The Scorpions; Wind of Change was undoubtedly the best single of the
    year.

    Wasn't "The Robots" an ancient song by Kraftwerk that was re-released ?
    I'm sure I remember it from when I used to listen to them years ago.

939.5Or was it 16...RUTILE::MACFADYENa cow sez mooMon Nov 25 1991 16:261
But none of the aforementioned were no1 for 14 weeks, were they?
939.6Anything you want us to XSTACY::NBLEHEINMon Nov 25 1991 16:515
    It was 16 weeks. The version of "The Robots" was completley
    re-recorded . It really doesn't have all that much to do with the
    original version.

        Sheriff Fatman - Carter:U.S.M , surely an anthem for urban life

    Oh no! Don't open that old can of worms again. The Great Roxette
    debate deserves a note in it's own right. Pistols at dawn if anyone's
    up to it?

    I would go for these -

    Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

    Smashing Pumkins - Siva

    Curve - Frozen

    If I had to pick one it would be Nirvana - a hard choice tough.

    It came late, but I reckon John Lee Hooker's This Is Hip has to be
    a contender for best single of the year, in an otherwise very barren
    year.

I think so. jangly pop, with a couple of slow tracks.

   re -.2, I reckon "Can You Dig It" is one of the better tracks on the
   album, but having said that, there's not a duff track on it. As Stuart
   says, good jangly pop and one of my favourites of the year.

    "Can You Dig It?" was from the Mock Turtles album "Turtle Soup"
    originally, an even better album than "Two Sides" IMHO. Especially the
    track "Lay Me Down". Dead funky.
