Heard on the radio that William Hill have stop taking bets on the
Christmas no. 1 - so many people have backed Queen that the odds have
    become unreasonable.

| | So what will the no.1 L.P. be then ?
     The obvious contenders are:

ENYA "Shepard Moons" (I know this has already been to no.1 but
it's the time of year for these records to do well)

MICHAEL JACKSON ('cos it's an event)

QUEEN (already been to no.1 but still the favourite IMO)

U2 "ACHTUNG BABY" (not likely as nearly EVERYONE buys a U2
l.p. the week it comes out)

TINA TURNER (as usual it got stuck @no.2 , I don't reckon
    it'll make it)

PET SHOP BOYS (their only real hope is the new single)

could well do with a kick up it's parochial ass.

It's easy to knock someone like Cliff Richard. He's been around
FOREVER and he now (at a pretty advanced age) makes very middle of
the road, bland (IMO) music. However, he obviously has a very firm
base of support (like, say, Status Quo - relative newcomers compared
with Cliff) and it's probably safe to say that those people will still
be buying Cliff records long after the 'trendier' element of his
knockers (oh, err, sounds like something from Viz!) have learnt to
cringe at their support of their current fad.

I doubt Cliff Richard cares one fig (he'd never say 'gives a toss')
about those who dislike him. He's survived for a long time in a very
fickle marketplace and he's (no doubt) a very rich man.

I think its amusing that Cliff "the virgin" Richard only bothers to
bring out records at Christmas (or new year).

Blimey, I guess thats one way of financing your pressies.

Funny though, I thought he only appealed to sexually frustrated
    house-wives over 40 8^) !

Ian "Sammy" Samwell, I think. The author of the song.

Cliff's manager at the time discovered Hank and Bruce in the 2Is coffee
bar (where Cliff himself had been discovered). Hank impressed him with
his guitar playing, and his Buddy Holly looks.

PS. Cliff is highly spoken of by artists who have actually worked with
him. So don't believe everything the papers say.

No, it wasn't Sammy, it was a session guitarist called Ernie Shears.
Ernie was also to play guitar on the follow-up single and actually
laid the track down....but it sounded too similar to Move it.
I think Ernie was paid something like 5 pounds and four shillings for
the session !!
Hank laid down his offering and they prefered it....the rest is history!

Thats it, Shears was the name. I've tried to work out all the riffs
played on that record but I've never really managed it. I suspect they
are all deceptively simple but then these things usually are.

I DID work out the intro though. That was so simple I couldn't believe
    it!

It may well have been Ernie Shears. I wasn't too sure about Ian
    Samwell.

The follow up to Move It was "High Class Baby" but it definitely was
not Hank Marvin playing on that. It was still Ernie, and the reason
Cliff looked for someone else was because he thought the guitar sounded
    too similar.

Hank and Bruce (who joined as a pair, at Hank's insitence) first played
on "Livin' Lovin' Doll". I think this was the third single.

(By the way, at that time, all the backing group members were paid the
standard session fee for each piece they were on. On their first tour,
the same happened. But Hank got asked to play for other artists as well
as Cliff, and ended up earning more than Cliff himself.)
