    Now, my band is currently racking our collective brains to come out
    with a new band name. Our old name, "Shot To Funk" is a bit limiting as
    we're not a pure funk band - more of a fusion between funk and american
    rock.
    
    Now, we've thought of another name, but we're worried that it will
    offend people or be misread.
    
    The name we thought of is "Dirty lil' Arabs". What do you think (not of
    the name as such, but more like its potential to offend people?).

    Err..Not really trying to attract that sort of crowd.  We want a name 
    thats memorable, interesting but has some humour in it. 

   How about "Bibble"?

    "A fusion between funk and american rock"....definitely offensive.
    How about "We're breaking up soon".

	Thinking up a name is always troublesome. A few years ago, a band
	our way was really struggling for a name, so they decided, that they
	would open an encyclopaedia at random, and stick a pin into a page,
	the result being their name, and they had to abide by that. Thus was
	born "Page 32". No, seriously, it worked out to be "Fra Angelico" who 
	was a painter at sometime in the past. After a time they shortened this
	to "Fra". 

	Also, old film and book titles hold a wealth of possible names.
	One example that comes to mind is "All About Eve".

	Just a suggestion,

	The Fridge.

   Alternatively, you could open a conference (this one), pick a note_no at 
   random (eg 333.2), and vow to name your band after whatever the P-name
   of whoever posted the note says.

    Vegeterians against the Clan hardly invokes a picture of Funk/American
    rock though does it? Sounds more like a Goth-rock group! :^)

    Go to the library/bookshelf and pick a title or author at random?
    
    Watch some old Science Fiction films and listen to the names of the
    characters?
    
    Flick channels on your TV while the news is on and listen for a 
    good name in the jumble of words coming out?
    
    Dial a telephone number at random and listen to the name of whoever
    replies?

    Just been reading the Hunter S Thompson book "Hells Angels"
    during my desperado type lunch-break and came across the 
    Heavy Rock name to end all Heavy Rock names...Dirty Thunder.

     I can't think of where else to ask this but what has happened the
    TIMBRE::MUSIC conference?
     I am aware that a new version was to be installed but I get the
    message 
          "You are not a member of this conference" when I try to enter.
    Answers would be appreciated.

    I always liked the sound of 'Atom Tan'.  i think this was a book in the
    50s, although the Clash may have used it as a song title at some time. 
    My various bands have interesting names, but they are all copyright,
    until such time as I get off my backside and form the bands.

    We've found a new name (from an OLD band I was in) and we've settled
    for it.

    An unusual request, but here goes. My mother is trying to trace a
    friend from many years ago. She has found out that one of the friend's
    sons is the drummer in the group 'James'.
    
    Now she wants to know if there is a fan club for this group she could
    get in touch with to try and contact him for the address of his mother.
    
    His name is/was David Bayton-Power. Could someone with an album of
    theirs check to see what name is listed for the drummer and let me
    know what is says.
    
    Also, if anyone could post an address of a 'James' fan-club or some
    such, that would be great.

    I have G Out Of London as a promo 12". Came out in early 1985 or
    late '84, and was (very) briefly popular at the Rock Garden gigs before
    the band came on.
    
    Never heard anything else by the band, and never followed them up.

    I found out the answer to this over the weekend. it was  "Hit to death
    in the future head" by the Flaming Lips.

    Does anyone know who was the first British singer to top the US charts?
    This could be a trick question (answer needed for a quiz) as the singer
    could be part of a group (eg Davy Jones of the Monkees).

    So I guess the question is: What was the first British (lyrical) single
    to top the American charts and who was the singer?

    Anybody know what that little metal strip is for that you find stuck on
    the back of CD's that you buy from larger music stores? I presume it is
    some sort of security device, but I can't see how rubbing a wallpaper
    roller over it disables it. How do they work?

    I think it's magnetic , but yest it is a security device. Virgin Use
    them. The roller I think demagnetises it. After they roll the thingie
    on the strip the normally wave it over a black pad, if a buzzer or what
    ever goes then the roll it again. If you look at the doors they
    normally have the same sort of pad there too.

    Yep - it's called "Home" (I think !).  Damn fine it is too.

They're all of a similar vein, I think.

The production is creepy - sounds like she's singing in the room/in your ear.

Whilst grubbing around at home, I found a c.d. which was given away with
Vox magazine ( it was the third one and features Freak Power/ Stereo MCs and
many more ). Does anybody have a full tracklisting, that they could let me
