Ha What A Joke...
1. Staus Quo were given an award for being all round nice boys, working
for charities and being kind to animals, sod the fact that they play
Sun City.
2. Almost all of the nominations for best male vocalist were over 40,
that's really the cutting edge of rock and roll.
3. They cut Lisa Stansfield's "wouldn't it be nice if the war ended"
speech, very revolutionary that was, might have started a riot. =8*)
4. They cut the fact Elton John said he was going to AA
5. The "You can dance to rock" section but they almost totally ignored
dance music, the biggest thing to happen in 1990.
6. Half the videos were shown with the wrong songs.
I could go on forever, the only redeeming points were that Depeche Mode
won the best single, although it was given the shortest spot of the
night, this was voted for by the people that count, the record buying
public, and secondly that the Cure won best group.

I thought giving her the damn award in the first place was disgusting.
If it hadn't been for a poor cover of a brilliant Prince track, few
people would even know who she is. The only award she deserves is
"Best International Female Mouthpiece".
But , everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Saving grace for me was Depeche Mode winning something AT LAST ! and
Talk-Talk actually being nominees.

Apparently a lot of places were doing this since they started herding their boys

our American brethren when it comes to selling `brits' product.
That ugly scene aside, the rest of the show was just plain embarassing. The

Just to set the record straight...This incident happened
last spring, before the Gulf crisis happened. She refused to have the
National Anthem played before her show because she was making a
statement about the censorship issue, which at the time, was
the big news in the US.
They didn't stop her from performing (you know, this is America and
$$$ is the most important thing to a "real" patriot,) they just
bad-mouthed her afterwards. *Note: I've never heard of any other
rock concert playing the National Anthem before the show and neither
had anyone else. (i.e. this is not a common occurance.) Hey, remember
when rock n roll was anti-establishment??

scene now (even the stuff that gets in the charts, where there's always

a couple of years ago, with the recent influx of some of the slightly
noisier indie guitar bands, the indie/dance crossover stuff, the more
melodic/less macho/more fun end of dance/rap etc., even if there are
still too many blummen cover versions of old songs for my taste.

| re .9 and .15
To further set the record straight, the incident occured at the
Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel NJ in early June of last year
(the 6th, if I rememebr correctly). The Arts Center has always
played the SSB before their shows, probably due to the fact that
it's not solely a "rock venue".
The reason the management gave in to her demand was because they
didn't want a riot on their hands. (Apparently she didn't state her
ultimatum until right before show time, before a packed house.)
As far as bad-mouthing her, they stated their opinion just as readily
as she always states hers, and said they wouldn't have her back. Not
that that would bother her, and they can find plenty of other performers
to fill the house.
It's true that it's not a common occurence to play the national anthem
before events here.... not as common as hearing God_Save_etc in the UK!

They did try just that, appealing to the Tammy Wynette market, with the
"Justified and Ancient" single. As I recall they didn't quite make No 1
at Christmas with it. But I liked it (I even paid money for it, which
is something I don't do very often).
The Justified and Ancient video was also pretty unique, as have been
several others from KLF which I've seen (what could be more unique than
the utterly pointless "It's Grim Up North").
We are indeed talking Bill Drummond here. Who is he anyway? (other than
ex-manager of Echo+Bunnymen, man behind Doctorin the Tardis, something
to do with The Orb?, author of "How to Get a No 1 Hit" (?), etc). (Time
for a KLF topic please).
ENT/KLF on the Brits was the most hilarious thing I have seen on TV in

the joke, but it made me laugh. I can't quite see how anybody can take
them seriously.
