| My views:
Cliff continues to produce high quality hit records, well produced well
sung and still original. Look at the stuff he's produced over the last
7-8 years. Having said this I am not a particular fan but I have to
hand it to him.
The Shads? Well I am a big fan but have to agree. Hank is capable of SO
much more (as evident on some of the early mid-70s material he
produced. However, I understand Hank is 110% Jehovah's witness and only
continues to record as a source of income. Hence the obligatory annual
album of covers and predictable live performances (minimal effort
required for maximum financial gain).
Clapton? Well what can he do without material? Great guitarist but
really, to call him a songwriter. Clapton fans extol Wonderful Tonight.
Yes, niceish song but Cliff would never have even considered it as a
single. The only REAL good thing he's written was Laydown Sally. Great
song, great backing. I AM serious here!

| There's plenty of TV I don't like. There's plenty of music I don't
like. That doesn't mean I think it should not be on TV, or exist as
music. (I'd be perfectly happy if every soap stopped yesterday).
Cliff may not appeal to you (or me as it happens), but he does appeal
to a huge audience - he's had over 100 singles released in this country
and every one of them has reached the top 30. Not a bad record: one
that Madonna et al stand no chance of equalling. Obvioulsy a lot of
people like these performers...prehaps a little tolerance and less
selfishness, Matty?

I was there, lots better. But In total, I thought the programme was
Fairly good, but missed most of the highlights off (eg. Paul Mc Cartney
doing Live and let die - wicked, and the rest of the Floyd.)

717.6 | What about Production? | LARVAE::BRIGGS | They use computers don't they? | Wed Aug 08 1990 11:33 | 11 |

What IS impressive these days is the actual TV production and camera
work. Use of small hand held cameras, that aerial camera thingy,
ultra-wide angle lenses and superb sound quality. These were all in
evidence on the Knebworth programme. I first really took notice of
these techniques on the Mandela broadcast. You could actually work out
the fingering Clapton was using AND even see the make of pickups he
had. I somehow can't believe the sound quality when you're actually
there is as good.

The sound, obviously, is not as good, but the programme just didn't
capture the atmosphere, which is probably why some people found it
boring. Although I do agree with the filming, which was a lot more
professional and pleasing to watch than some concerts I could mention.
eg. Roger Waters at the Berlin Wall, but there are other reasons why
that was bad when it shouldn't have been whoch I won't go into.

| I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting slightly tired of
all of these 'big concerts'.
When Live Aid was on I was glued to the screen for the full 10-12
hours, or whatever it was.
I even sat through acts that I was not particularly interested in
as there was a 'buzz' about the whole event.
It seems now that we are having one of these Concerts in aid of
whatever every couple of months and they have lost something.
I now tape them and use the old 'fast forward' to the acts I like.
The Mandella one was ok, Knebworth appeared bland watching on the
television (I'm a great Eric fan and although the notes and voice
was there the set lacked something)
And as for the John Lennon Tribute ! I'm glad John wasn't around
to see it.
Maybe these Concerts are in the 'you had to be there man!' class
and TV should get back to showing concerts by individual artists
so that the artist can play whatever he/she wishes to play to his/her
audience so that the viewer can get the best of a performance.
I'm not a great fan of Sir Cliff. Yea the guys got a good voice
and old Hank can play some licks, but I felt slightly sorry for
the guy giving it his all to a crowd who appeared to be humouring
him while waiting for 'real rock' artists to take the stage.
Don't mean to offend anyone, just my opinion.
Ooops sorry, should I possibly have used the old 'flame on'.
Iain
Maybe I'm just upset because Sidney Devine didn't appear !
(Only joking, honestly!)

| Who's Sidney Devine?
Anyway, I felt probably this Knebworth thing must have been better
there than it looked/sounded on TV. I only watched up to about 11, but
the only act I felt really gave a good account of themselves was Tears
for Fears who carried on regardless of the apalling downpour in which
they played!
FWIW (not much I guess) I thought the Lennon concert was the best
'compilation' concert I'd seen since Live Aid, as all the acts tried
to do something different with the old standards. Whether they added
anything (Terence Trent D'Arby - who I normally have little time for)
or not (Kylie - predictably!), at least they all made some kind of
effort not to just copy the (unbeatable, IMHO) original.

| I'm really tired of these big concerts as well. I don't think Pink Floyd
played at Knebworth though, wasn't it just David Gilmour, Nick Mason and
Rick Wright? ;-)
The best thing to do with these concerts is non participation.
I'm off to see The Wonderstuff, The Pixies and Sonic Youth soon.
No "Wonderful tonight" to be found!
