| .0 Where can I find the Prince version? Has he actually recorded it?
Though some other US band has recorded it...and thats where Sinead
got it ie. from their album version.
Yes...here "Lion and the Cobra" album from a few years back has
some good tracks on it.
She is currentlty giving interviews left right and centre...almost
apologising for the naughty things she said and did as a kid...gee
Sinead you are only 23!!!

She REALLY looks sad, trembling lip, BIG watery eyes that eventually
cry! She kept looking down and then straight up at me. I felt terrible!!
I didn't think she was going to get through the song. Yes,
I know it's mimed!! 8*)
Anyone know if there is an extended version?

never recorded the song.

David, I really know what you mean about the video. I thinks she
looks georgeous, really caring, my type. I think the video actually
got the record to number one but I still think it's a great song. I'm
surprised that so many like it.

| No, I don't think that Prince actualy recorded it. I think what makes
the record is Sineads voice. Her voice and phrasing really make it
stand out. If you listen to the backing track, its really a very
standard plodder ( in come the drums, dde dum, just like any FM radio
style song). I think the producers hsould have had more courage, and
left out a lot of the backing track.

Ahh vindicated at last. I bought the original of this song about four
years ago when it was first released on the Paisley Park label, and
have been abused and much maligned about my music tastes ever since.
It didn't sell very much in this country i.e. two, and I picked one
of those in a cheap bin. I think if I'm not mistaken the album is
eponymous, check that out ! Prince was involved with them to the
extent of assistant producer or consultant and as a result the album
has a definite Prince feel. IMHO it can be compared to the mould of
Paisley park, if you have heard any of the music Wendy and Lisa
produce you will have a sense for what to expect. There are about
three to four good 'Prince' style songs on the album, overall it
was worth the two punts.
The album first came to my attention when Mark after Dark, bringing you home
on the night train, aired it quite regularly. I think 'Nothing
Compares 2 U' was actually released as a single, and I definitely
remember that was the tune which prompted me to buy the album.
Well, there you go kiddies.

589.10 | Best Song For Yonks | CHEFS::BEALEK | | Thu Feb 01 1990 17:08 | 20 |
| Sinead is one of the most passionate artists around at the moment.
None of the soundalike-sony-walkman-SAW stuff here.
This song is really something of a departure for her, as her first
album (THe Lion and the Cobra) can be seen as 'violent' in style.
Its raw, strong, and has some rather pointed lyrics. But is her
octave flipping style that really grabs. Her new song is a complete
anthithasis to the track on 'The Lion and the Cobra' called 'Troy'.
This is the crowing song of her career and is REALLY moody,
ie; line one says "I remember, Dublin in a rainstorm...." ,the mood
then becomes more and more accusitory until the end when she says...
"Your still a liar!!!". Thus makes anyone feel a little uncomfitable,
but imagine how the bloke who it was about feels!
She has a new album out in March as well.
Also for all you lochenvars out there, she's married and has a son
called Mark.
Jules (who also thinks shes cute)

Viv and Neil stayed up watching TV til TWO in morning!!!!
Pretty strange huh???!
Now seriously, she's a *very* pretty girl with a pretty good voice
but I just don't like the song at all. I may be judging her wrong
as I haven't heard anything else she's done. I guess after listening
to a diet of 60's soul and Dexys Midnight Runners for about 4 years
I have become deaf to most types of music.

Sinead's new album is out (well, almost... I got a CD off the
production line before its out on the streets - pays off to know
people at the right places...).
It's called I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN'T GOT, and it's totaly
different than the first one.
It's very quite, very moody, very good!
10 tracks, 7 of these are very quite songs.
I have to admit I was a little disappointed at first 'cause
I expected something like THE LION AND THE COBRA (which i LOVED)
and this is SO different.
After hearing the whole thing 5-6 times, I can't stop.
Well, I can talk and talk, so in short- if you like her
voice and the general mood of NOTHING COMP...,
GO AND GET IT! (as soon as it's out).
Happy landings, 'cause your gonna fly!

589.16 | Sinead the Quite Magnificent. | CHEFS::BEALEK | | Wed Mar 14 1990 12:52 | 17 |
| This is a simply wonderful album - a classic.
Gone is the angst of 'The Lion and The Cobra', this is more
considered, more adult but a little sadder.
There is one appauling song (No.2 - I can't remember its name) cos'
its almost rap. Another is in 'The Lion...' style whilst she also
has quite the best 'protest' song I've heard for years in the form
of 'Black Boys On Mopeds' - this fairly destoys the style of the
increasingly samey Tracey Chapman.
It's its very difference that makes it wonderful. So quiet - not
really in the Sunday afternoon mould - yet so powerful.
Run, hop, wheel or trip to your nearest music store and shout
"Oh Give Me Sinead O'Connor's new album with the long title!!!"
And they will.

Radio News this morning..... "Sinead to Quit Music business" ,
apparently the last straw was the fuss over her mutilating The
Picture of the Pope as a stand against the highly restrictive
views which are enforced on the catholic population...Frankly
I find it difficult to believe, given the number of little stunts
she's pulled over the years ...However it will of course be a loss
if she genuinely does quit...

| Simon Bates said on Radio 1 only last week that he thought she was im for a nervous
breakdown. Her recent outbursts (said Simes) were due to overwork and wasn't
really in her nature.
I can see his point. She is trying to raise Jake (her young son) on her own - no
easy task in itself. But on top of that, she's been on tour, done tha backing
vocals on the Marxman single and probably a lot more besides.
I hope she recovers. I don't like her music that much but I admire her for her
hard work.

I admire *ONLY* her musical talent, other than that she has no other

| Its interesting that when someone tries to be anything other than a
vacous pop star, everyone is eager to knock them down. Have we all
become so conservative that we can't bear to hear others opinions? She
is only saying out loud what a lot of people feel, and Irish women
badly need a voice at the moment. Sinead doesn't have the answers, but
at least she has made some people think about the questions.

I admire her guts, she's just saying what she really thinks - is that
so bad ? I'd never sing the star strangled banner, and I think the Pope
is a useless pratt and I'm sure there are many other people out there
who'd agree.
I don't have a lot of time for her music, but she's better than most of
the boring, miserable indie shit that gets out nowadays.

You guess wrong (who is Simon Bates?). Its based on the admittedly
reported fact (The Independent - as I wasn't there) that during the
finale when everyone else was doing a sing-a-longa-Bob she stood at
the back of the stage and had a drag.
She's free to sing what she likes, but she's not an elected
representative and what she says/does is only her opinion. As the
above is mine.
