581.0. "Michael Jackson" by JUMBLY::OCONNOR (More honest than Frank) Wed Jan 10 1990 17:42

Hi,
any illusions any of you may have had about my `tastes' in
music will have them shattered any second now. (Or maybe I should
have said `confirmed').

Step forward Michael Jackson, the original "Growing up in Public"
kid. Originally the fifth short one in The Jackson Five, he
enjoyed fame back in the early 70's with songs like "Rockin' Robin"
(beep! beep!) and even today the tune sounds fresh and very
danceable (I seem to like that word). Himself and Donny Osmond were
_the_ pin-ups on any self-respecting twelve-year-old's wall (although
they would all probably deny it now).

Since then Jackson has fashioned a very lucrative and, on the whole,
satisfying career for himself. 1982's "Thriller" was, at that time
anyhow, the highest-selling album in the history of rock/pop. And it
spawned the hit singles "Billie Jean" and "Off the Wall" among
others. And in practically all of the countries in which his albums
are available, he enjoys the good favour of the `music critics' (now
there's a classic contradiction in words).

The 1987 long-player "Bad" again generated more than a few hits;
"Bad", "Man in the Mirror", "The way you make me feel" and "Dirty
Diana". Of the four, "Man In the Mirror" stands out. It really is an
amazingly well clipped stomper, in which he drafts in 26 (!) others
to `cheer him on'. With the chorus refrain of "Chainge!", it is
ironic to note that the one thing the general public has seen Michael
"change" is the colour of his skin. His photograph on the cover of
"Bad" shows his skin-colour to be more yellowish than the desired
`white' shade he was after. For this act of `treachery' to his race
he found himself disowned by the Black Men's Association of America.
I've never read how Jackson reacted to this.

"Bad", also a high-selling single, featured a 30 minute video which
was directed by Martin ("I feel so guilty Father") Scorcese, of
"Mean Streets" and "Raging Bull" fame and countless other films mostly
starring Robert de Niro. I didn't much like it.

Lastly "The way you make me feel" was another boppy number with the
lad dancing around in leathers, jumping on and off the roofs of
various cars and trying to convince some beauty how _wild_ he was
about her. Enjoyable if you like that sort of thing.

So does anyone else out there have views on the uhmmm...."phenomenon"
that is Michael Jackson ?? (I hope I haven't made a fool out of myself
for nothing!)

(Sue Chilton...did Michael's pin-up occupy pride-of-place on your
bedroom-wall ?? And Bob...you must've something to say!)

Bye for now.

- Tim

Hmmm.... the phenomenon, eh? Well, I've always disliked MJ.
Don't know what the fuss is about, why he sells so many discs,
why the girls swoon, etc. But I agree with your term, phenomenon.
I think its gotten to the point where its kind of self-perpetuating,
he could gargle into a microphone and it'd sell millions.

Nope, sorry Tim, he's one pop star who never made it to my bedroom
wall. Now, Adam Clayton, I'd hang him over my bed anyday!!

:-) xx
581.2Must've been somethin' I ate!HYEND::SCHILTONWhen they said sit down,I stood upWed Jan 10 1990 18:0415
In fact, its kind of scary that kids do hold him in such high
esteem. I mean, they name schools after him, hold him up as an
example to young people and for what?

He's decided to hide himself away, because he's got an abnormal
fear of germs (!!!) and the public (I guess). Has strange ideas
of what he wants to collect (the Elephant Man's skeleton, wasn't
it?!), undergoes repeated cosmetic surgical procedures so that
he can look like who-knows-who, sleeps in an oxygen tent .... it's
just not "normal" .

If he wants to live his life like this fine, "whatever floats your
boat", but don't hold him up as an example to the our youth.

You wanted an opinion, Tim ....

The guy has never known a normal life; he's been a star since he can
remember.

One has to admire his dancing, though, whatever you think of his music
or personality..
581.4Yo Man! Blame it on the Boogie!CLADA::MEAGHERThese are the hands of a tired manThu Jan 11 1990 09:3727
Street cred? Who needs it?

Yeah, I reckon that, while not quite my cup of tea, he's great.
Whether or not I like his style of music or not (and I do - a bit), I
must admit that he does it VERY well. I could say similar things about
Madonna (AND she's prettier than Micheal, though not much anymore :-)

Fine, perhaps he isn't so good so as to deserve all of the adoration
that he gets, but the music business has always worked that way. It
doesn't stop him from being an artist. Also, I'm not interested in how
he behaves offstage, it's what he produces I'm interested in.

Anyway, there's no point discussing my likes & dislikes. Jackson
does have a very distinctive sound, he is extremely danceable (for me,
Yo! Oasis here I come!), and if you like him, then you don't think that
his albums are good, you think they're GREAT. Also, I don't think that
we could accuse the hype machine of putting him where he is (though it
might help keep him there), he did that through sheer raw talent
(Thriller).

Love him or hate him, can anyone honestly say that there is a better
pop vocalist in the world today?

As the father of two kids who are MAD about MJ (especially my 11 year
old son) I have to say that I also enjoy his music, his dancing is
incredible and so unique, even his film and video work is quite
watchable. The one thing you have to say about him is his
professionalism and perfectionism. I guess a lot of credit also has to
go to Quincy Jones who was his producer on 'Thriller' and 'Bad', MJ has
acknowledged this himself.

That's from a dedicated '60s merchant. BTW my son also likes Eric
Clapton so he is not totally blinkered.

Yeah but, would you say that someone is trying to pull the wool
over his eyes ??

-;) (PS I've only included the `smilie' coz I don't know you.
Personally I find them an eyesore. Their sole function
seems to be to say; "Hey! By the way, I was only joking!"

Intelligent ?? Or what ??)

You mean The Dru...sorry "Adam".
I like your quaint use of the vernacular, Sue dear.

Brian, (in .4) you're probably right about "Off The Wall". I'm

re .7...

I do not consider myself a fan of either Broocie or MJ Sue,
but the comparison in pure vocal ability between the two leaves
me speachless!

ie - a singer versus a shouter.

The only singer who can come close to Jackson in terms of voice
control, range and quality is Stevie Wonder.

Surely, Michael, even you will admit that it isn't always
the person with the best "quality" voice who become our
'favorites'.

Very often, its their writing ability, style, charisma,
that certain something, or any combination of these factors
that endears them to us.

I *totally* agree, Sue. But my original observation was a reaction
to a few comments implying that Jackson was overrated - and I had
to point out that his vocal ability is second to none.

But you're right - although he's a great singer, he's no 'favourite'
of mine either.

Michael Jackson has range? Remind him to use it on his next album
and I'll have a listen! :^)

Sorry, but, great star that he is and very good at what he does
though he undoubtedly is, he is no great singer! Second to none
but 403rd to many seems about fair!

You *had* to point it out to me?! Here we go again, same old
argument. You are not stating *fact* Michael, but your opinion.
My opinion differs. In my opinion, he is over-rated and I believe
that there are others with much better singing voices. (Joanne
probably being one of them!! ;-) )

But I acknowledge the fact that others will disagree (as you do).

re last 2..

I'm not arguing (with anyone!)on behalf of Michael Jackson, I repeat
I'm no fan. But I can't believe that you don't consider him to
be a great singer.

Sure we all have opinions on artists whether they're our own favourites
or not, but I would have thought that some things are just taken
for granted. It's like saying I don't particularly like Eric
Clapton - so he's a poor guitarist.

Sometimes there are plain facts that transcend opinions.

(IMHO) ;-)

Michael
581.16Believe it or not, we don't!CURRNT::SAXBYIsn't it 5.30 yet?Mon Jan 15 1990 13:1724

And sometimes your own opinion can cloud the facts.

You obviously have a grudging admiriation for Michael Jackson and
think he's a great singer. I too have a grudging admirartion for
him (He IS a great performer and is perhaps the archetypal pop star)
, but I don't think he's a great singer.

There's nothing offensive about his voice (WHAT AM I SAYING? at
times he sounds like a puppy being whipped!), but I wouldn't
consider him a better than average singer. I've heard a couple of
his albums (Off the Wall and Thriller) and they have some good tracks
on them (I've always liked Billy Jean), but they don't stand out
for his great voice. They are all production sound!

Of course, we all have different ideas of what is a good singing
voice, and I don't doubt that you would ridicule any list that I
put in of male vocalists who I rate (and if not you someone else
would :^)), but that doesn't mean that I'm right and you (or they
are wrong) just that we have a different understanding of what is
good.
