I say, here, here to Richard O's comments.
I've been dying for a notes conference to open on Daniel, I just
hadn't got the time to do it earlier myself.
His shows on RTE at 8.30pm on a Sunday are just brilliant. The
songs he sings together with the beautiful scenery of places like
Donegal.. ah just sheer magic.
I think he is a much better singer than his sister Margo, and shes
really good. He is such a gentleman as well, a real hit with the
Irish women. (Perhaps I'm just jealous that I haven't got as good
a voice myself!). More of this man's music please and keep the
NOTES file rolling with notes, praising perhaps Donegal's best asset.

| >>> -< Daniel ...the best >-
Agreed!
Daniel O'Donnell! What a great man! What a performer. I've been listening
to Daniel now for several years & I'd be hard pushed to point out a particular
song as being my favorite.
It certainly is refreshing to find someone out there with such a great voice.
I can't think of anyone else with such a good one or who manages to put such
PASSION into all of his songs. You can feel the love pouring out of him, when
he sings about his home or his mother.
I read that when RTE finally gave in to public demand & gave Daniel his own TV
show pubs all around the country noted that they didn't fill up until AFTER the
show was over - UNLESS they advertised that they'd be showing the programme. I
must admit that I'm not even a wee bit surprised. A friend of mine videos the
shows every week & a gang of us will come round for a cup of tea & a few
biscuits while we watch the show. It makes for a great night out.
But the thing that is special about Daniel is his universal appeal. I mean
just about everyone is a fan, though of course it's got to the stage where it's
not "cool" to admit it [hence .1, come on Dave admit it, he's great] - much as
has happened with U2. But Daniel has much greater appeal than U2 did here, even
in their heyday. I mean my *Mother* likes U2 because they're local boys made
good, but she likes Daniel O'Donnell because he's simply TOO DAMM GOOD not to
like.
I consider myself pretty much a rock fan, but I've got to admit that I'm more
than happy to sit down & listen to good old Daniel anytime.
In a sense I see some similarities between Daniel & U2, though of course their
music is COMPLETELY different. Both are prepared to sing from the heart about
really important issues.

Daniel is one of the most down to earth guys in the business. His
honesty and integrity are above reproach.
His music is simply superb and he's undoubtedly the best performer to
come out of Ireland in recent years.
I fully concur with the sentiments expressed in the earlier notes. i
was thrilled when RTE finally gave into persistent pressure and gave
him his own TV show. I never miss it.
This guy is going to be really big. Forget U2 they're nobodies

| AT LAST !
At last, a note on Daniel, or as his closest friends call him ..Danny!
I've been waiting for what seems like an eternity to read a note
on the Bard from the Hills of Donegal. Like other fans i find myself
staying in on a sunday night to see his show.
How could anyone not be taken by the personality. You feel like,
when you are watching him perform, like .....oh words fail me!
Needless to say i'll be getting a copy or more of his latest LP
on that fine homegrown label HAARMAC. My god, when i think of the
talent on that label, theres John Carroll ( 'The GOLDEN HORN' no
less ) and many other fine artists.
I've been trying for a week now to get the poster of the cover of
the record. What a picture it would make on my bedroom wall!!
No-one in the record business would be able to get away with a pose
like that. What style!
I do have one small problem with Danny's show tho'.
You've all seen him live in concert, haven't you. Well, the highlight
of his act is when, late in the evening, he SHED's his Jacket on
stage ( amid screams from his fans ) and .... he DANCES !
I've yet to see anything that provokes the kind of emotions that
this does.
But , alas, he hasn't done it yet on the TV show.
Wait a minute. Isn't Christmas next week. Maybe he's saving it for
the Christmas special.
I can't wait. To think i thought this Christmas would be terrible.
NOT NOW!!

| I've liked DOD for quite a while, though I must admit I prefer his earlier
stuff.
There isn't anything really new in his music, but that's not so unusual is it ?
As an Irish artist he's succeeded in getting out from under the typical "U3"
banner and forged his own identity, never compromising.
Country music is a much maligned music form but let's face it, how come so many
people who've grown up in the fifties and sixties now listen almost exclusively
to country music ? I think it says something.
True, sticking to the country format is quite limiting, and presents a very
limited palette of colours, but it's what you do within those bounds that counts.
To continue the artistic metaphor DOD throws away his brushes and uses a
big stick, but then did you ever hear Jackson Pollock try to sing country ?

Well Yes and No Gary...the following ditty might explain all.
HOW I LOST MY GIRLFRIEND OVER A DANNY O'DONNELL VIDEO.
(or don't try that POSITION if you are not a FAN!)
Twas the night of the Galway Hurdle
way back in last July.
We got the Danny video out
the one that always makes Momma cry.
So I says to dear old Kathleen
for that was me girlfriends name
Care to get Romantic
there is always Danny to blame!
And before I could get me R.C. out
She was lying starkers on the couch.
I never thought it would be such a thrill
to hear Danny sing Spancil Hill.
But by the time he sang 'De Banks'
I'd already had me fill.
When I finally woke up
there was hissing on the screen.
Me wallet and me trousers gone
and Kathleen was nowhere to be seen.
I saw her some months later
on the cover on Danny sleeve.
With hips a broad as a Texan's smile
saying "Danny I won't leave".
So the moral of the story is
quite simple and so true.
Watch out for girls that smile a lot
and sing 'Danny I Love You Too'

| I was another late comer to the DOD scene, but am now a fan of the
man with the passion that only converts know.
O'Donnell's music to me symbolises what _real_ music should be:
fresh, catchy, eminently danceable-to. Call me old-fashioned if you
will, but I'm not into these dance bands where all the rhythm is
synthesised. Daniel's rhythm is in his voice, in the lyric of his
songs (most of which, by the way, he writes himself - except for
the older Irish ballads - a truly versatile artist, you'll admit!),
in the way he dances on stage.

Surely, even if you haven't heard of DOD himself, you must have
heard of the song by - I think it's Louise Morrisey of The

(This really is true. I thought it was ridiculous too until I
went to see him play at the Tralee festival in '88, and since
then the song has great meaning for me, too.)

Hothouse Flowers!!). I had heard some of his stuff on the radio and I
didn't think it was anything special.
However, a few months ago his cousin, Tom, who works beside me here,
offered me a ticket for one of his shows. As the ticket was a
complimentary, I went along. We made the trek out to Peacock's and we
had a great time -- it was one of the best concerts I was at. Granted
the occasion was a special one, the annual ball that they (Peacock's)
put on, but still Daniel was in great form, telling stories about
growing up. I know Springsteen is one of the best at that, but I felt I
could really relate to what Daniel was talking about. You know, the
wealth talent that has come out of Donegal is amazing - I think the
Donegal show he had on RTE a few weeks back illustrated that.

Surely you've heard of his famous concert in the National Ballroom
in Kilburn in 1987 where he played support to the German Hardcore
band Einstuerzende Neubaten (sp?).
What a show by all accounts.
Most fans in London wer there to see Eins... but by the end of the
night it was Dan who had stolen their hearts.
Appearances wise, the Eins... crowd are not pretty to look at, being
totally in black with big mops of hair on top, but they wer like
little children by the end of the set.
Ah the innocence of it all...
Anyway, unfortunately there were a few rowdies in the audience who
got carried away with the exuberance of Dan's show. They jumped
up on stage and proceeded to tear Dan's Jacket off. [ he was planning
to do this himself as a prelude to his famous Dance number ]
After losing his jacket, the fans wanted more. His beautiful no-crease
white shirt with perfectly crafted bow tie was torn off him.
After the show Dan, understandably shaken , vowed never to play
in the U.K. again, hence no tour.

I'm glad to see so much enthusiasm, from Ireland, about Daniel's
music ... all the replies are so positive and must be a good
indication of his enormous popularity. He is still relatively
unknown over here in the U.S., however, I was lucky enough to be
brought to one of his concerts during a visit last summer to my
cousins in Donegal, his home county !
What a thrill, the excitement was reminiscent of a Bruce Springstein

overrun by the crowd, all the tickets had been sold out 2 months
beforehand. While I wouldn't normally be a country music fanatic
I was really impressed by this guy. His powerful stage performance
and truly original music are a winning combination.
I brought a number of his albums home with me and have started a DOD

Did you not here Danny saying that he only kisses two women at

| Every time I go home to the Emerald Isle I am bombarded with the
only music ever to be played in our house and struggling to keep
awake - yes you've guessed it - Daniel O - my man!
Can you imagine the look of horror on my face when hearing that
he was actually appearing at the " Galtymore" where I work at the
weekends ( and I admitted to it ?).
I actually stayed awake and what is more I thought he was Brilliant
-- well bearable anyway. Literally their were hordes of screaming
women, wanting his autograph and their picture taken with him. I
couldn't believe it!!! People were actually wearing gold lame(sp)
jackets with Daniel O Donnell Fan Club on the back- pass me a bucket
quickly.
Who is this guy - GOD, or Ireland's answer to Jason Donovan??

| I guess by that enlightened note, you are refering to the persons
sexuality ? Not really apt for U.K Music, is it ?
Comments like <FAGGOT> really don't do yourself any favours either.

few Irish artists that didn't record any of those *silly* World
cup songs...
