567.0. "Electronic." by CURRNT::SAXBY (Isn't it 5.30 yet?) Fri Dec 15 1989 09:48

I notice from the 'Best of ' notes that there are a fair number
of New Order fans in this conference.

What do you, and anyone else for that matter (especially PSB and
Smiths fans) think of the single 'Getting Away With It' by Electronic.

Apparently this group are made up of the lead singer of New Order,
Neil Tennant of the PSB and Johnny Marr of the Smiths.Anyone know
if the 4th member is anyone famous?

The overall sound of this single is very New Order (I suppose because
the voice is so distinctive), but you do get the hints of the bigger
production sound and more harmony of the PSB at times.

Personally I think it's great, and am hoping for an album.

    What do you think?

Yup...I think its great. Its a kinda slow slushy thing, in some ways
reminds me of Soft Cell. I don't think Neil Tennant helped on all of
the album, so the rest of the stuff may be different. The lp is
promised for Spring. Ought to be a Crimbo No 1, is it in the charts?

I saw it on Top of the Pops as well. I didn't think it was that good compared
to what Tennant/Albrect have produced seperately in the past. A bit wishy
washy really. Johnny Marr didn't really seem to contribute much to the whole
song as well.

Lee.

P.S. I don't want to get off the subject of this topic, but as an aside, to
those who witnessed this song on TOTP last night; Wasn't that DJ compere guy
about the most obnoxious person in the whole world? Yes, I thought he was.

Nicky Campbell is by no means my favourite person, but there are
infinitely more nauseating people who host TOTP and the likes.

I found his comment about Tina Turner's age rather daring and
encouraging actually. Normally these guys are so sychophantic it
    would make you puke.

I got the 12" and what a waste!

The 2 mixes on there are really boring and stretched out. Also the
b-side `Lucky Bag' is a bit boring, although it might sound at home in
    some nightclub.

Does anyone know if there is a remix 12" out? I can't get hold of
anything in Basingstoke. I also saw the cassette single advertised in
RM, but I can't get that either.

    MattyB
567.9Do they really get away with it?SHAPES::FIDDLERMWed Jan 03 1990 17:415
Yeah, I think the A side is boring, the shorter one isn't too bad tho'.
There is a remix, in a sleeve with a white background. This seems to
have even more longer mixes, so may be even more boring.

Yeah, I read that there's is a possibility. I can't imagine what it
could sound like - It's not New Order's style.

Do you know if if there are recording any other new stuff? I know
Electronic did their studio work ages back. So maybe they are making
    good use of their time.

Well, I read that they may go back to the studio together during
summer, but on prevous form, and with thier method of working,
I wouldnt expect new product for at least 18 months. Hookey is touring
with Revenge soon, so that will probably take up a month or so.
I think that Gillian and Steve are doing some theme music work,
     but I can't remember what.

I've just picked up the Electronic Remix 12". (at last!)

Instead of "Getting Away With It" it is titled "Electromix". It has
the same cover as the normal 12" but the background is white and the
drink is clear, instead of whisky.

    The tracks are;

"Getting Away With It, vocal remix"
"Getting Away With It, nude mix"
    "Lucky Bag, miami edit"
"Getting Away With It, original Version"

I'll let you know what it sounds like tommorrow, as I haven't got a
record player at work! I have also seen the cassette single, but this
has the same cover and tracks as the 7".

    RE. -1 The Eletromix 12".

Well it's certainly better than the normal 12"

The 2 a-side mixes are similar, and both are great. They have driving
disco beats, lots of bass and keyboards extra to the normal. Perfect
    for a club.

The mix of "Lucky Bag" is very similar to the one on the normal 12" and
therfore is neither better nor worse.

The `original mix' of "Getting Away With It" is virtually the same as
the 7", but has more of Johnny Marr's Guitar.

Are records really worth buying as an investment?

I know some very rare records are valuable, but are records that
you can buy in the shops really worth getting for the investment
potential? Would you have to buy millions to make a reasonable return?

I've got a wierd ABC 12" single of a remixed version of the Look
of Love.It claims to be for radio play only (or something like that)
and both sides contain the same track (a rip off really!). Would
    it be worth anything?

    Mark,

Is the centre of the record, got a large red "A", if so this is
known as a white label copy, you would find that these are the promo
records, and are found to be collecter items.

567.22Why not guess?SHAPES::FIDDLERMFri Jan 12 1990 09:549
They don't always have a big red A, quite often there is no info on the
label at all, just typewritten notes on the sleeve. Radio promotional
items are valuable as well. I have a Pete Townsend lp, which has a
'mock interview' between tracks (Interview Pete yourself). The idea
being that you ask pre-set questions, and Petes reply is on the vinyl,
along with him introducing tracks from his lp. It keeps me amused
    anyway!

    Re Demo discs...

Yeah, it's true that demos are often more valuable than issues,
but if there are less issues about then they are more valuable.
This only occours with *very* old records in general though.
BTW...Has the b side of the "Look of love" Demo got a mono version
on it or is it just a second stereo side? Anyway, don't feel ripped
off about it, it will increase in value and the B side was probably
    rubbish anyway! ;^)

    J/
567.24CURRNT::SAXBYIsn't it 5.30 yet?Fri Jan 12 1990 11:279

I must admit I hardly ever play the 'B' side (didn't seem much point
as it was the same as the 'A', so it could be mono, I don't know.

I wasn't too bothered about it as I bought it a few years ago when
12" singles made financial sense (not at 3.49+) and I bought it
purely for this one track which you couldn't buy anywhere else.

    Mark
567.25Buy Run2 by New Order - Out 2 months value 30.00SHAPES::BROWNMMon Jan 15 1990 13:5135
Records from you local Our Price can end up worth a fortune.

However most 7" & 12" singles don't rise too much in value, especially
if they are reissused on the same catalogue No. in the same sleeve.

It is the limited editions that rise in value quickly, but it helps if
the band becomes popular. For instance the early Stone Roses singles
are worth around 20-30 each already. The early Madonna singles, even
though they were hits, are worth around 5 each. Icidentally, if
anyone has a copy of Madonna - `Everybody' 7" or 12" I would swim the
channel underwater to get hold of it.

Take for instance Erasure's `Heavenly Action'. The song only reached
No 100 and the 7" is only worth 1.75 and the 12" 3.50. BUT the
limited edition remix 12" is worth 80.00. This could have been bought
    from HMV or anywhere.

Sometimes these limited editions 12" (picture disc or whatever) are
difficult to get. Only this weekend I travelled to Reading (I couldn't
get is from B'stoke) to buy the last copy in Reading of Erasure's
`Supernature'. This cost 3.49 but in 3 months will be worth three
times as much. The thing is that if only 2000 copies are pressed and
spread throughout the country you have to hunt round a few shops before
    they sell out.

Difficulty comes in knowing whether the remix 12" is a limited edition or
not, and actually selling them for the right price.

    MattyB

ps. If anybody has `Holiday' UK 7" with the cover that has Madonna on it, I
would pay the right price 5.00. This something that I saw in my local
record shop but didn't buy at the time and regret very much. In fact
that also goes for the 2 track 12" of `Borderline' (Not the 3 track one)
567.26exSHAPES::FIDDLERMMon Jan 15 1990 15:234
Is that the standard issue of RUN2 thats worth that much?? Was it in
    Record Collector or something?

567.27Remember, the value of Madonna singles can go down..HUNEY::MACHINMon Jan 15 1990 15:306

Is this a temporary increase in value? I mean, when Erasure or whatever
are all over, will you end up stuck with just a bunch of duff singles,
or will they remain 'collectable' indefinitely?

    Richard.

    Re 567.27
That's the skill of being a good collector (if you are in it for
the money). It seems to be a bit like the stock exchange...the more
copies about, the less it's worth. Popularity obviously plays a
    great part in this too.
    An Example.
I have a single at home called "That was the Whiskey Talkin'" by
    Ronnie Forte.
I bought it for 10. A few months later it was worth about 40
but then it dropped back down to about 15...just due to popularity!
This record is reknown for losing and gaining it's value in fast
succession. The skill is buying a good copy at the cheapest price
and then getting rid of it at the highest. I'm not selling though
because I actually like the records I collect! ;^)

RE. Run 2 12" only - New Order

Only 500 copies were pressed (so I was told). I was also told that it
is so rare that John Peel was asked to give his copy back, because New
Order didn't have one! Nice story init? Dunno if it's true though.

What I do know is that it took me 2 weeks to get hold of it. I
couldn't get it in Basingstoke, or Reading, or Farnborough, and even my
favourite record shops, Rival in Bath and The Left Legged Pinannaple in
Loughborough. I eventually picked it up in Domino records in Salisbury
for 5.00 and have since seen it in Trax in Doncaster and Hudsons in
    Chesterfield.

I haven't seen it for sale in Record Collector yet, except for a Scott
Little Remix. I don't know if this is the same one or not, but that
was going for 11.99. I have also seen a 7" promo in there and that
    was about 20.

Mikef, have you got a copy? If so is it the standard 12"?

    As a footnote;
`God Save The Queen' by the Sex Pistols was released with initial
quantities carying a different b-side. (I can't remember the title).
This is now worth 450.00! according to RC.
567.30UncertaintySHAPES::FIDDLERMTue Jan 16 1990 08:4510
I thnk you'll find it was nearer 10,000 copies pressed. I got the
standard 12" the day of release, and everywhere had copies at the
standard price. Same for my friends elsewhere. I imagine its hard to
find now tho'. I heard Peelie play the 7", and then mutter about
himself being lucky because of the rarity value.

The rare Sex Pistols - this must be the EMI 7"? And is the A+M 7" even
    rarer??

    RE. God Save The Queen

I can't remember which came first, the EMI 7" or the A&M 7". But it's
the first one that is worth the money. The second release is only
worth about 3-4. See this months Record Collector, it have a Punk
Special in it that list all Punk singles from '76 & '77.

567.32Electromix 12"FOOT::SAXBYIsn't it 5.30 yet?Tue Jan 23 1990 09:2521
I bought the Electromix 12" in Our Price in Basingstoke yesterday
(the first full price 12" I've bought in about 6 years!).

If you like the single chances are you'll love the remix 12". As
was said earlier the tracks are very much dance floor orientated,
but not in the modern 'Whose making this crap in the house' style,
more akin to the early-mid 80s style (just my cup of tea).

Johnny Marr does come across much more on the single-mix track than
on the 7" version that's played on the radio.

Another good thing is that the whole thing seems to last a long
time (I didn't actually time it) and I didn't feel as though I'd
been ripped off by paying for 1 good track and 3 duff ones.

I don't care if it makes or looses money (I doubt it'll ever be
worth much), but it is a record that I know I'll play a lot, along
with my Blue Monday and Love Will Tear Us Apart 12"s.
