Ok, tell me. :^)
I was deadly serious (still am). Here I am wading through note upon
note (many containing the same 20 or so tracks/albums/groups over
and over) which don't tell us anything about the musical taste of
the people putting them that we didn't already know and which don't
encourage any discussion of what was good about those groups/albums/
etc, etc.
Obviously you like them. I don't. They remind me of those pathetic
kiddies pop poll awards :^)

Seconded. These lists aren't really informing us of anything at all. I know
this file's been a bit quiet of late, but that's no excuse to go filling it up
with irrelevant info. How about some more concert/album reviews? Are people
just not listening to music anymore, or is everyone merely disillusioned by this
last decade? Actually, that's probably very hypocricital of me as I've hardly
contributed much recently, but these lists are getting on my nerves.

| I don't see what's so bad about them! They're there as a celebration of the
music of the last decade/year. For you to voice your opinions on whether it's
been a good year/decade or not. Tell us what you think we should be buying.
Don't lets start another 'I hate ****' note...I want to leave with happy
memories!

I reckon 1 note 'The best of the 80s' or maybe 2 if you NEEDED one
for 1989 would have been suficient. The number there are is an extreme
case of clutter.
I don't mind those of you who want to put in the best x whatevers
of whenever, but it makes this conference hard work (not to mention
a lot of wasted time) to go through each of these 'best of' notes.
One or two would have made it a lot easier to NEXT UNSEEN through
the lot.

have to put up with my 'clutter' anymore.
Some of you can be really fussy at times.

556.7 | My feelings too.. | BURYST::EDMUNDS | $ no !fm2r, no comment | Thu Nov 30 1989 17:37 | 12 |
| When I first saw those seemingly-never-ending "best of" notes, I was thoroughly
fed up, and was going to do something about it (like move them all to one note).
But then I thought that wasn't appropriate use of the moderator priveledge, so
I didn't. However, it seems I'm not alone in hating eight million notes of
lists.
Anyone have any SERIOUS objections to me combining them all into one note?
We've been here before, BTW. In the last version of this conference, it got
ULTRA boring with loads of lists of what was best or worst...

I was going to put them all as just 2 notes. In the end I thought this would be
a bad idea because then those 2 notes would be cluttered full of odds and ends
and wouldn't be as easy to understand.
Only 2 people have complained so far. Everyone else seems happy to tell us what
they have been listening to this decade.
It's not pointless either. One of the reasons why I log into UK_MUSIC is to find
out if I'm missing any good bands. If I see someones list full of bands that I
like and one band that I haven't heard of then I will most definatly check out
that band. I got feedback on my choice of 'Fraser Chorus' in a couple of my
charts. What about the guys views on Maddona - no one has ever managed to
persuade me she was worth the record vinyl till I'd read those notes.
I also wanted to see if one track/album/band stood out as a definate favourite
in UK_MUSIC. If would be alot harder to spot this if the notes were merged. They
do this in the other conferences. In Radio_Radio they do it twice a year! Once
for the fiscal year! This weeks N.M.E. has it's form for it's readers poll and I
will be filling it in and sending it off as I find it a valuable reference as to
what are the views of the other readers of the paper.
And what about John Peel's Festive 50?
Someone back me up????

| Whats wrong with these lists, I believe them to be informative pointing out
several bands that I haven't heard yet but will try to in the future.
Two people moan and the mod thinks it's the general opinion of everyone. Leave
them as they are ... thanks.

Really, people calm down, or has an opinion been banned.
Bruce (now gone?) got rather upset over what is a small thing really.
I don't find any interest in wading through note after note over
repetitive lists (just look at them and tell me that the same 20
records/groups don't crop up over and over). I can't see that it
gives us any information that 2 notes or seperate notes on the
groups could give us. As I said it's just like the Smash Hits polls
, with all the obvious groups cropping up (I don't see anything
different in these lists).
I agree that it might be interesting to know what is the most popular
group/album over the last year/decade amongst the UK_MUSIC noters,
but just having everyone type in a list isn't going to tell us
that. If someone can (and is prepared to) spend the time taking
mails and forming a definitive list then fine, but why encourage
clutter of a conference?
The bloke who put the Madonna comments in deserves some praise as
he's the only person to actually put any REASONS for his liking
of her material, all the rest are just blind adoration (look at
how many lists contain a multiple of albums/singles by the same
group) with no reasoning behind their listing those groups/records.
I don't read RADIO_RADIO, and if it's as full of tedious lists as this note
is in danger of becoming I won't bother, but I'm not going to get
all upset and tell you that I won't bother you all with my opinions
again because I don't mind if you all think I'm wrong or right.
Some people seem to think that criticism of things they do in notes
is a personal attack, I can assure you all that any comments I make
are not intended in that way and if I've inadvertedly caused genuine
offence in stating my views I apologise.

point of view and I put mine forward. Just for you I will put little
comments as to why I like my favourites when I fill in my best of the
80's later today. (But I think most of you know why I like what I like
- I've harped on about it so many times).

Hi Bruce,
Glad you're not gone yet, I wouldn't have liked you to have left
with us misunderstanding each other.
There appears to be a reasonable amount of support for your notes
so I agree with the last note "Leave 'em". Maybe in future though
a less expansive method of carrying out such a survey could be
devised :^)
I agree entirely with the sentiment that this conference can lead
you to types of music or groups that you might not otherwise be
aware of (that's why I read it!). However, as I said, it would be
more useful if people put in some reasons for liking a certain group
/type of music/album or at least a description of them, as this
will give more idea of what you will hear if you try them out.
(This, I'll admit, isn't a comment that can be aimed at you, Bruce
:^) )
For instance, the bloke who likes Madonna, says pretty well why
he likes her and like her or not you can respect his opinion as
he states it clearly and reasonably. I don't think lists of favourites
really have the same usefulness, no matter how interesting people
do or don't find them.
Mark
PS Good luck Bruce and Au revoir!

| I'm the bloke who likes Madonna.
It works both ways. Most of my record collection is full of chart
stuff. But reading what everyone else likes has given me ideas on what
I might like.
There's so many good records about that you don't get to hear
everything that you want. All I get to hear is chart stuff and
therefore this is where I select the records I want to buy.
On this conference there are so many who are into the Indie stuff, and
they can't all be wrong, there must be something good to these groups.
As of payday I will have the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays LPs in my
collection. If it weren't for people stating their favourites I would
never have known.
Thanks all
MattyB
p.s. Bruce: If you buy the Madonna LP, I'll buy som James stuff !!!
