    I thoroughly agree with .1  The base note is a  henious load of old
    cobblers. Remember these are the people who try to get bands off the
    airwaves, who sued Dead Kennedy's Jello Biafra (sp?) and have launched
    campaigns promoting "clean" bands.

    Apparently super-clean Bono even pi**ed them off by swigging a bottle
    of Jack Daniels on a U2 video. By "Them" I mean an organised group of
    (mostly) fundamentalist U.S. christians who go by some name or other
    "Parents against Rock Music" or smt like that.

    It would be laughable if it wasn't so c-r-e-e-p-y.  
    
    Jimbo Morrison would roll laughing in his grave.

    I take it Mr Dunn's rock 'n roll career never got off the ground...-;)

    Dear MUSIC_UK,
    
    	After reading note 517 in your notesfile, I decided to go home and
    try out this `Back-tracking' on my old record player. However, after
    picking a record at random (Boom-bang-a-bang by that old favourite
    Lulu) and spinning it rapidly anti-clockwise on my player, the drive
    belt and stylus broke, causing 78 pounds worth of damage to my stereo
    equipment.
    
    Have any other noters out there had a similar experience?

    At least 1 of the backwards messages listed does actually exist on the
    record - I've got the album and ages ago recorded it onto an open reel
    tape and played it back in reverse. 
    
    I can see why messages about the devil will upset christians, but I hardly
    think they will affect anyone else listening to the record.

    Unfortunatly these type of articles (as in the base note) are inane
    attention getters by so called 'christians' to try to blame the
    problems of the world's youth on "rock'n'roll" music.
    
    However, the question remains _does_ backward masking work?  Well
    lets think about this - do you think the human mind is able to 
    comprehend an 'eccrypted' backward message.  Well if youre answer
    is no then you are in agreement with every major study done on the
    subject.  So if it doesn't work - why worry about it?  Well my opinion
    on the matter is that attacking rock musicians is a lot more
    'glamourous' than actually doing anything productive (like helping
    the homeless or promoting human rights)  so 'flunkies' like the
    author of the base note article will continue to spread misinformation
    to the masses.

    Although the human mind cannot decypher backwards information it
    is *incredably* open to suggestion - i.e. if you tell someone
    beforehand what they will 'hear' when they listen to a peice of
    music - since the music is so 'unfamiliar' to the mind it will try
    to 'fit' what it has been told to hear into what it hears - thereby
    propigating incorrect information.

    I think this back-masking is absolute tripe,Led Zeppelin have
    continually stated that they never intentionally back-masked any songs,
    On I believe Frank Zappa'a album "Them or Us" there is a witty note
    about anyone stupid enough to want to do this to a record,and I believe
    there is a track on the album recorded backwards just to make the
    point.

    I seem to remember that when The Wall - Pink Floyd was released,
    Walters did say that there was a quick reversed message - cant remember
    exacxtly what it was - something faar out probably.
    
    NB - several 60's tracks have backwards drums/guitars, you can tell
    them by the "decay" of the note coming at the front, and the "attack"
    at the end. Check out "Are you experienced" by Hendrix, who being
    rather good also devised the solo so that it works when reversed.

	Nothing very exciting.  It says "Congratulations.  You've discovered
	the secret message.  Please send your entries to old Pink, care of
	The Funny Farm ..."

	I don't know whether it works or not, but I would rather if these 
	beasties were banned.  If they don't work, then why bother to put them
	in.  If they do, then I should have the right to choose whether I listen
	to them or not & if I'm not consciously aware of them how can I choose?

    
    
    What I want to know is, who has enough time to go through every
    single pop record that comes out and play it backwards to find out
    if there's any back-masking? ;-)
