ROCK - THE TOUCH OF EVIL By Bill Dunn A.A
- - - - - - - - - - * - - - - - - - - - -
More than anything else in the world, Rock N' Roll or, as it is known today,
Rock Music, cuts across cultural, political and religious barriers. From teeny
boppers to arm-chair rockers everyone in some way has come in contact with it.
Rock music is over 35 years of age having had its beginnings in the mid 1950's.
The term Rock N'Roll was given by the American DJ, the late Allan Freed - he
picked up the term from street slang which is associated with sex in the back
of a car. They were "rockin an rollin maan". With the coming of the 1960's,
the Beatles mania and flower-power saw a change in Rock N'Roll as groups and
musicians, having experienced the drug phenomena of that era, began to
experiment with what's known in the recording business as "back-tracking" or
"backwards-masking". This came about through many of the rock artists reading
the writings of Aleister Crowley who was probably one of the most feared
Satanists of the 19th century. Crowly in his book "Magick", pages 481-482,
tells his readers to "teach yourself to write backwards, walk backwards, and
PLAY PHONO-GRAPH RECORDS BACKWARDS. It will give you light into the spirit-
world".
Groups like the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath are
only a few we could mention who were involved in some indirect way and
influenced by Crowley; even Ozzy Osbourne entitles one of his songs to
"Mr Crowley". Jimmy Page, who played for the band Led Zepplin bought the house
once owned by Crowley. On the Beatles album "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club
Band" among the sea of faces on the cover sleeve Aleister Crowley is the second
person in from the left on the back row - the bald-headed man. David Bowie made
a rather startling statement in "Rolling Stone magazine" Feb 12th. 1976 p83
issue no. 206 - "Rock has always been the devils music - you can't convince
me that it isn't".
Regarding the back-tracking or, as it is known, "subliminal messages", it is
impossible to list all the groups or musicians, from the Beatles who were the
first to use it, up to the present day. The following is a brief list:
E.L.O. - On their album "Fire on high" the song "Face the music" is back-tracked
with the words -
"The music is reversible but time, turn back, turn back, turn back".
QUEEN - The song "Another one bites the dust" is back-tracked with the message -
"It's fun to smoke marajuana".
LED ZEPPLIN - The classic "Stairway to heaven" is back-tracked with the words -
"Here's to my sweet Satan, the one who's little path makes me sad,
who's power is Satan".
VENOM - "In league with Satan" is back-tracked with the following -
"I will burn your soul, I will crush your bones,
I will make you bleed, you're going to bleed for me"
EAGLES - The song "Hotel California" contains the backmasked message -
"Yes Satan had help, he even organized his own religion"
The Eagles manager Larry Salter has admitted that the group has had dealings
with the "satanic church". "The first church of Satan" was founded by Anton
LaVey in an old hotel in California Street, San Fransisco, USA. Anton LaVey
is also pictured on the inside cover of the album "Hotel California" - if
you look at the three windows on the inside cover LaVey is in the middle window.
JOHN LENNON and YOKO ONO - The song "Kiss, kiss, kiss" from the "Double Fantasy"
album contains the backmasked message -
"Attack, attack, attack . . . we shot John Lennon"
It is rather interesting to note that this song was released BEFORE Lennons
death on Dec. 8th 1980.
MADONNA - The song "Material Girl" has the back-tracked message -
"He is the devil, Satan - I want him so, I want him so".
In regard to the subject of subliminal messages one is often asked the question,
"does it work?" I would first of all answer by saying, "if it doesn't work why
spend so much time and finance using it?" Also, in the book "Subliminal
Seduction" by Dr Wilson Bryan Key, Dr Key makes mention of advertising companies
spending small fortunes researching how music can be used to influence people.
Some discovered that 72-beats-per-minute rhythm increases suggestibility and
that a television commercial with such a beat produces the headache symtoms that
the product being advertised was supposed to cure.
The purpose of using these techniques with satanic overtones on record albums
is to harden the heart of the listener to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, thereby
attempting to prevent that person from coming to the knowledge of the truth
that Jesus Christ is Lord, and accepting Gods gift of forgiveness of sins and
eternal life. Aleister Crowley took upon himself the title of the Beast, Mr 666,
and stated that his lifes mission was the destruction of Christianity and the
setting up of his own religion. Aleister Crowley is now dead and Christianity
is still flourishing. In fact Jesus Christ himself says in Matthew 16 v.18 -
"I will build my shurch and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it".

Bill Dunn holds an Associate of Arts Degree with the International
Correspondance Institute and travels extensively throughout Great Britain,
Ireland and America lecturing and preaching. He is married with two children,
having previously been a Rock singer with an international rock band of the 60's
before his conversion to Christianity.

| I thoroughly agree with .1 The base note is a henious load of old
cobblers. Remember these are the people who try to get bands off the
airwaves, who sued Dead Kennedy's Jello Biafra (sp?) and have launched
campaigns promoting "clean" bands.
Apparently super-clean Bono even pi**ed them off by swigging a bottle
of Jack Daniels on a U2 video. By "Them" I mean an organised group of
(mostly) fundamentalist U.S. christians who go by some name or other
"Parents against Rock Music" or smt like that.
It would be laughable if it wasn't so c-r-e-e-p-y.
Jimbo Morrison would roll laughing in his grave.
I take it Mr Dunn's rock 'n roll career never got off the ground...-;)

Dear MUSIC_UK,
After reading note 517 in your notesfile, I decided to go home and
try out this `Back-tracking' on my old record player. However, after
picking a record at random (Boom-bang-a-bang by that old favourite
Lulu) and spinning it rapidly anti-clockwise on my player, the drive
belt and stylus broke, causing 78 pounds worth of damage to my stereo
equipment.
Have any other noters out there had a similar experience?
Mr. A. Pratt,
Reading.

At least 1 of the backwards messages listed does actually exist on the
record - I've got the album and ages ago recorded it onto an open reel
tape and played it back in reverse.
I can see why messages about the devil will upset christians, but I hardly
think they will affect anyone else listening to the record.

517.10 | a little information is _very_ dangerous | ISLNDS::ROBINSON | | Sat Oct 14 1989 03:05 | 27 |

Unfortunatly these type of articles (as in the base note) are inane
attention getters by so called 'christians' to try to blame the
problems of the world's youth on "rock'n'roll" music.
However, the question remains _does_ backward masking work? Well
lets think about this - do you think the human mind is able to
comprehend an 'eccrypted' backward message. Well if youre answer
is no then you are in agreement with every major study done on the
subject. So if it doesn't work - why worry about it? Well my opinion
on the matter is that attacking rock musicians is a lot more
'glamourous' than actually doing anything productive (like helping
the homeless or promoting human rights) so 'flunkies' like the
author of the base note article will continue to spread misinformation
to the masses.
re -1
Although the human mind cannot decypher backwards information it
is *incredably* open to suggestion - i.e. if you tell someone
beforehand what they will 'hear' when they listen to a peice of
music - since the music is so 'unfamiliar' to the mind it will try
to 'fit' what it has been told to hear into what it hears - thereby
propigating incorrect information.

For more information on the back-masking debate, see DREGS::MUSIC.
The same base note was posted there, and the subsequent replies
are getting quite lively, to say the least.

I think this back-masking is absolute tripe,Led Zeppelin have
continually stated that they never intentionally back-masked any songs,
On I believe Frank Zappa'a album "Them or Us" there is a witty note
about anyone stupid enough to want to do this to a record, and I believe
there is a track on the album recorded backwards just to make the
point.

| I seem to remember that when The Wall - Pink Floyd was released,
Walters did say that there was a quick reversed message - cant remember
exacxtly what it was - something faar out probably.
NB - several 60's tracks have backwards drums/guitars, you can tell
them by the "decay" of the note coming at the front, and the "attack"
at the end. Check out "Are you experienced" by Hendrix, who being
rather good also devised the solo so that it works when reversed.

Nothing very exciting. It says "Congratulations. You've discovered
the secret message. Please send your entries to old Pink, care of
The Funny Farm ..."
I don't know whether it works or not, but I would rather if these
beasties were banned. If they don't work, then why bother to put them
in. If they do, then I should have the right to choose whether I listen
to them or not & if I'm not consciously aware of them how can I choose?

single pop record that comes out and play it backwards to find out
if there's any back-masking? ;-)
