| The Stone Roses' album is s***hot. Definitely worth a listen. They
are a very talented band and make some interesting songs. They're
playing live at the Ali Pali in November. For more comment have
a look at BOMBE::RADIO_RADIO, somewhere around the end of August.
Buy it!

499.3 | No comparison! | GREBO::GURU | Any minute now pop will eat itself! | Tue Oct 24 1989 17:15 | 21 |
| To bring this arguement into it's proper place rather than the Album Review
note, to compare the Stone Roses to that second rate bands The Smiths *8)
is unjust to both bands. Their styles are totally different as are the lyrics/
music. I for one prefer the Roses to the Smiths and admit only going to see
them (without hearing any of their stuff) because of the press they were
getting, but also that was how I first heard of the Smiths - from the music
press (never did go and see them!). Both bands were hyped by the Music press
and it's only because the Smiths were first that most other bands are now
being compared with them, which I believe is wrong.
Now the arguement goes futher, who can say the the Wedding Present or James
are better than any other band, surely this boils down to a personal opinion
here. So what if the Roses are getting their influence from 60's guitar bands,
are James and the Wedding Present so unique that they devised their own brand
of music, no influences from anyone else ... phooey!
I also don't think that bands like the Darling Buds and the Primitives should be
mentioned in context with a great band like the Roses (or even the Smiths for
that fact!).

| I didn't compare the Stone Roses to anyone in my note. I mentioned
the bands I like so that the guy who was gonna go home and listen
to The Stone Roses would think, 'Is that it?' if he didn't like
them.
There's a lot more to the indie scene than the Stone Roses as you
well know Stuart.
Oh and mentioning the Darling Buds and The Primitives in my reply
was in response to a comment that had been put forward in the reply
before mine.
Flame on,
In case you hadn't realised Stuart you have managed to get me riled.
Let's drop the Smiths/Roses comparison completly because the whole
idea of comparing them repulses me. If we had a vote on which band
had created the most interest, better songs, better promise, better
potential etc etc in a year of existance I think then you would
have to agree that The Roses pale to insignificance alongside The
Smiths.
When I read the statement that you thought The Roses were better
than The Smiths I immediatly binned the tape I'd done for you. You
are obviously unready for such good music (and I had such hign hopes).
Flame off.

I was the "guy who was going to go home and listen to the Roses
album" (I am not a man I'm a node!!)
Never mind what Lee Cotton thinks about your fave bands, the lad's
brain is addled by _far_ too much feedback. -;)
You may say that the S Roses are not an indie band...I thought an indie
band meant simply a band on an indie label. Sounds simple to me.
I'll give a few of the bands a listen once I get a break from work (!)
But as I said different music from around the world remains my main
interest music-wise. And (please) don't make "wild" judgements about
all World music on the strength of listening to a Ukranian folk band
jamming with a Manchester rock outfit. It doesn't sound a bit like
Algerian Rai-pop, Yemenite disco, or Zairean Zoukous. Honest! -;)
If you'd like any names in these and other areas I'd be glad to oblige.
Flame off 'n on 'n off 'n on etc...

This note is definately getting out of hand. It seems Mr. Sturrock is
very opinionated and seems to believe that he is the sole mentor on
Indie music. Anybody who gets riled because someones says "Band A is
miles better than Band B" has definately got their priorities in life
wrong.
Anyway, as this is the Stone Roses note I better say something relevant
about the band. Ummm, Well, I like them myself. I thought the album
was very good. Did anybody see the program with them on a couple of
months ago (I think it was Rapido but I'm not sure). They showed them
mixing songs from their new album. The stuff that I heard sounded
very different and almost disco-like compared to the debut. Mind you
they were still mixing it at the time. Ian Brown, the lead singer (I'm
pretty sure his name is Ian Brown, jeez these pop stars sure have wild
names!) said that the next album would definately be in a different
vein.

| Hey now hold on a miniute! I have never thought of myself as a 'sole
mentor' on indie music...I am totally mad about it, but I would
never call myself 'The sole mentor' of the scene unless I was told
I was by someone really important.
Maybe I am being a bit hard on The Stone Roses because of the press
they get but then I did see an interview with them on a local late
night program that really showed what a set of pillocks the guys
behind the music are. Stoned out of their heads and very immature.
The people I know that have met Ian have all come back with the
same response, 'He's a really big headed w**ker' and that's 3 separate
people on 3 separate occasions.
And don't give me all the rubbish about 'it's the music that matters'
cos I do like to know where my money is going. I don't like to fund
the yobs/drug-pushers/hooligans of today.
You obviously don't understand what The Smiths mean to some of the
young people who were around at the same time as them. Maybe one
or two (Mike?) of you probably do understand why I was so riled
by Stuart's statement about Smiths v Roses. But then it was probably
just Stuart doing a wind up again.
What wrong with being opinionated? I listen to everyones views then
make my own mind up...I try not to let the music press influence
me in any way...and they do influence us although we don't like
to admit it no one likes to be proved wrong.
Right, time to take my skinny ar*e out of this conference cos i'm
obviously not welcome anymore.
And I wanted to enter my Buds review too.

Hold on a minute. Come back all is forgiven! A conference will
always have a good flame every now and then. Don't take it too personally.
If there wasn't such a wide range of opinions then this conference wouldn't

| OK OK OK OK OK .... so I like the Roses more than the Smiths, but I don't want
to fall out with my newest friend Bruce because of it.
The last attack on Bruce being the "sole mentor" was totally wrong, I believe
Bruce puts across what the Indie "philosophy" in his reviews and notes, more so
than anyone else in this conference or in Radio_Radio. After talking with him
on the phone I could tell how much music, especially Indie music, meant to the
guy. To him it's not just a hobby/leisure pursuit, it's a way of life! I'm
sure he would be the first to admit that he would love have a job in the music
industry.
The above might look like I'm "brown-nosing" it a bit, but who cares (as long as
I get my tape! *8) )
I for one don't want to see Bruce leave this conference prematurely, maybe now
he will consider staying ... please!

You've got to be careful what you say in Notes - long-time noters know
that from bitter experience! Also, every once in a while you get into a
notes scrap like this. Remember that things tend to get exaggerated in
notes, since there are no non-textual messages to modify or qualify what
you're saying. Don't worry about it, things blow over fast.
I would recommend that you change the title of your contentious note
(now, which PARTICULAR contentious note was that!). You can do this
easily, with that note on the screen, by doing
Notes> mod note/title="something that won't kick up a fuss"
Who am I to hand out this advice? No-one in particular, I can't/won't
do anything if you ignore it...

and were produced by John Leckie during a summer recording sesh in Cornwall.

appeared looking suitably sullen and rebellious, Tracey (the presenter)
stood in front of them, billed it as their "first live TV appearance",
then moved out of shot to let them get on with it. Which they did...
...for about sixty seconds, after which for no apparent reason they
ground to a halt. They mumbled a bit to each other, Tracey came back
into view and said something about a power cut, then after a minute she
gamely tried to get on with show, with the lead singer shouting in the
background. I heard him say "waste of time!".
They didn't reappear, instead we got their video, and Tracey apologised
a few times for "technical problems". I've got to say that there were
no obvious technical problems - maybe they just messed up the song?

I was recently at a record fair in Dunfermline and spotted a copy of a
Stone Roses Live album, recorded in Walsall (eh?) middle of '89.
It was going for 10 quid so I thought I'd risk it. I'm glad I wasn't at
that gig if this recording is a true representation of it as it is dire...
All I'm hoping now is that it will be worth a few bob in years to come, and
at least with it being so bad I wont play it much and therefore will be able
to keep it in pretty good nick.
Cheers

ps I did feel happy walking out the door of the fair when I saw another dealer
selling the same live album for 12 quid. Made 2 quid in a matter of minutes.

It's a Flare Cop NME 10th Feb 1990
All 4 members of the Stone Roses were remanded on conditional bail at
Wolverhampton Magistrates Court last Wednesday. The four, Ian Brown,
John Squire, Alan "Reni" Wren, and Gary "Manny" Mournfield, will appear
in court on March 6 to face charges of criminal damage amounting to
10000 inflicted on the Wolverhampton offices of their former record
company FM Revolver.
It is alleged that the 4 carried out a "grudge attack" on FM Revolver
boss Paul Birch as retaliation against his re-issuing of the band's
early single 'Sally Cinnamon' and it's accompanying video, shot in
Manchester without the band's consent.
In the attack cans of blue and white paint are alleged to have been
thrown around the interior of Birch's office, covering him and his
girlfriend and causing extensive damage. Three cars, including a
Mercedes, were also daubed with paint during the attack.
Bail was granted on condition that the band stay away from FM Revolver
offices in Wolverhampton and London and they make no contact with
either Birch or his girlfriend Olivia Darling. The four then returned
to South Wales where they had been recording at the time of their
arrest.

| Well, so the Stone(d) Roses are going to release another album
then.....
I bet it is going to be a trendy sort of dance groove thang, rather
than a simple pleasnet pop tunes like the last album. I personally
think that it is a shame that a traditional 4 piece, who started
off doing pop, shoud go and do somthing like an albums worth of
Fools Gold. This is clever management for money.... Don't tell me
this is not hype. It is a shame that the group (Probably) wont be
able to stand up to the pressure of doing what they originally wanted
do do, as seen from the first album, but have been manipulated into
diversifying. I guess the clever part is that the band probably
have been talked into it so well, they themselves believe that they
can produce good dance music.
Packaging, thats all the next album will be, at a guess,
in my own opinion of course...

| I got the `So Young/Tell Me' single. I thought it was only released
on 12", but there it was, the 7". It looks official with the good
quality sleeve, and the copywright bit etc, and the catalogue number of
THIN001. I had to hear the tracks anyway so I bought it.
It's not really very good (both songs). It hasn't got that Stone Roses
quality, though you can tell it's Ian singing, and there's the Stone
Roses guitar, but really it sounds like on of Adam And The Ants first
singles, `Cart Trouble' or `Xerox' maybe.
Also my walkman broke (dry joint in the headphone socket you know!). I
had it fixed and now instead of the Auto-Reverse playing the other side
of the tape it plays the music backwards. What has this to do with the
Stone Roses?
I can play the backwards songs forwards. Full Fathom Five is the best
- it's just a slightly different version of Elephant Stone. Then
you have Simone which is a mellow instrumental anyway. It's quite
nice, like the guitar equivalent to mellow classical music. Don't Stop
and Guerica are just Waterfall and Made Of Stone, but the words aren't
very clear, and the backing is slightly different. You wouldn't listen
to these more than a couple of times.

but - The Stone Roses have a new single on Nov 21st...with the album
due on Dec 5th. Will it be as good as the first? Or will it be the
biggest anti-climax of the year? Does anyone remember the Stone Roses?

| A lot of more exciting, interesting and innovative bands have arrived since the
stone roses last produced anything. No doubt the music press are going to start
banging on about them, but I really couldn't give a toss, while there are better
bands around. If it's brilliant, I'll happily eat my words, but do you really
think it can possibly eclipse some of what's gone on since they started -
Nirvana, Suede, Blur, Oasis etc.....

BTW. Blur - innovative? Oasis - innovative? Fun for sure, but I
wouldnt say what they were doing was particularly new or freah.

| And the stone roses were?
I only used Oasis, Blur et al as examples, because they're the ones who have
become pretty massive. I don't recon that the stone roses would've achieved
such heights.

Err...I don't know how your memory is, but the Roses were massive with
a capital M back in whenever it was (89?). I dont think Oasis could do
a Spike Island yet (although I'm not sure anyone would...). I'm not
sure that in the years to come Blur will be remembered with the same
excitment that the Stone Roses are (and after one lp and a few
singles) (and without having to pretend to be working class londoners
:-) ).

Suede, Oasis & Blur are all minor cult figures in the U.S. that were
supposed to come over here and be massive. Maybe one of them will
breakthrough here, but I don't think their music is in "style" right now
- i.e. British bands sounding like British bands.
The Stone Roses were much anticipated after their 1st lp, but never
made it over here, so it's hard to say how big they would've been. I
remember them getting a lot of good reviews. (I like their stuff, but
I think it was very derivative psychedelic pop.)

And no, I didn't buy George Best the day it came out, but who did? I was still
figuring out what sort of music I liked back then, and only really got into the
Wedding Present when they put Bizarro out, and a friend's brother played it
exceedingly loud. I went to see them on the Seamonsters tour (with Buffalo Tom
supporting), and bought their back-issues, followed by their new releases.

| If you must know, I wasn't actually born when it was released. I am, in fact, a
child prodigy, and I'm only 6 years old. However, I did put it on order, the
minute I was released from the maternity unit.
May I once again, finally I hope, apologise for being a young person. These
things happen, and I'm terribly sorry if me being young offends any of you. One
day, I too will be an old person, and will be able to patronise my younger
colleagues, and ask them if they bought the first Frank Black album, or if they
were just a twinkle in their parents' eyes when Suede was released.
Also, don't forget that until recent years, we couldn't actually receive radio
one in S.W.Wales, so I never heard popular music apart from on local radio (crap
Neil Diamond all day), TOTP (crap bucks fizz every week) or on Radio 2 (Crap
Neil Diamond all day, with "Crazy" Ed "Stewpot" Stewart). My friend's
cosmopolitan brother ventured over the border for a couple of years, and brought
this weird stuff back, called pop music. He gathered all the village's
young-folk, and we all huddled around the gramophone player. We were exposed to
proper music for the first time, as the sound of the Doors bellowed out of this
"frisco disco" (TM). This was closely followed by a Wedding Present Education,
after which I decided to start spending my dinner money on records such as
Bizzaro etc. .

If the new single/album doesn't happen, they'll have still made their

Lyrics>>>>
Love spreads her arms
Waits there for the nails
I forgive you boy I will prevail
Too much to take, some cross to bear
I'm hiding in the trees in a picnic
She's over there
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
She didn't scream
She didn't make a sound
I forgive you boy but don't leave town
Coal black skin, naked in the rain
Hammer flash in the lighting
They're hurting her again
Let me put you in the picture
Let me show you what I mean
The messiah is my sister
Ain't no king man she's my queen (X2)
I had a dream I've seen the light
Don't put it out, say she's alright
Yeah, she's my sister
She didn't scream
She didn't make a sound
I forgive you but don't leave town
Coal black skin naked in the rain
Hammer flash in the lighting
They're hurting her again
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Let me put you in the picture
Let me show you what I mean
The messiah is my sister
Ain't no king man, she's my queen (X8)
I had a dream I've seen the light
Don't put it out say she's alright
Yeah, she's my sister

There's nothing wrong with the 'The second coming' unless you're a
journalist... most of whom apparently haven't listened to the album.
The Stone Roses haven't released an old single, the record label that
effectively stopped them recording/releasing material for a good part
of the last 5 years has re-released an old single - presumably hoping
to cash in on their latest publicity.

Now why would that be? Are the UK dates before the rest of Europe - seems
unlikely now? This Zurich gig is advertised as their first ever in
Switzerland, so maybe they think we won't notice if the drummer can't play the

Either you'll be treated to a 'warm-up for Glastonbury' gig, a 'Live

it's the former. Given their previous reluctance to release music or

The Stone Roses played at the Benicassum Festival near Madrid in Spain on
2nd August. The new Guitarist is Aziz Ibrahim formerly of Simply Red *
Asia. He's not confirmed as the permanent replacement for Squire yet
though, 'he's the first guy they've found that fits, but they want to
see how it works out in a Live situation first".
Apparently they were 'astonishingly good' (but we all knew that didn't

Also, John Squire is seeking an Irish drummer, for no other reason
than he wants someone Irish in the band! Nice to see that the
