| YEP I like the Jam. They penned some good solid songs , and without
modern gimmicks. What happened to the other two? I know one of them
went solo for a while.
Also, don't cringe Barry, but if anyone was to cover one of their
tracks it should have been Boy George ( when he still had a voice),
covering The Bitterest Pill. Weller must written it for him and
no pun intended (re;drugs) . 8^)
David.
BTW: strange I would have thought more of you out in musicland
would have liked The Jam?!

Yes Rick Buckler did join a band called Time U.K, they had about
3 singles, Bruce Foxton had 1 hit single from a very good solo
album but never produced anything like the brilliant Smithers Jones.
The Jam are with doubt my favourite band of all time, the lyrics,
the music and agression they used to put into there music has never
been repeated my anyone since, although i like the Style Council
there will never be another band like The Jam, i saw them 10 times
live, no fancy lights, no fancy stage show, just them and maybe a
brass section and the crowd, pure power and agression.

| The first, and only, time I saw them was at the Rainbow in May '79.
Remember it well; the two support bands were The Records ( who
put out a great debut album) and The Chords ( nearly as crap as
The Secret Affair, not nearly as crap as The Merton Parkas ).
It was in the days when the Jam still wore those matching suits,
around the time of "Strange Town" and they even played one of my
favourites "News of the World."
What a gig!!

I also saw The Jam at the Rainbow round about the same time, and
the band that supported them that night was The Vapours, of Turning
Japanese fame but the best concert for me was out adoubt was
there final concert ever, at Wembley Arena, with support acts like
The Dolly Mixtures and Big Country, there was one more but i forget
who it was, they did everthing from In The City to Beat Surrender
a two and a Half hour set with everyone on their feet from start
to finish a sad but brilliant night. Its a shame it was never captured
on video.

| I like some songs by The Jam, but I don't think their vocals were
ever anything to write home about.
"Start!" sounds a lot like "Taxman." "Strange Town" is a very good
single.
I liked 'em because they seemed to take old Who and Kinks for their
inspiration.

495.10 | But did'nt we have a nice time? | YUPPY::OHAGANB | Bontempi King | Fri Jul 19 1991 14:59 | 27 |
| Judging by the advertising for the "new" product Polydor have seen it fit
to start a Jam revival or should that be wallet revival? The punter of
course is getting nothing new as far as I know; no previously un-released
material has been mysteriously discovered but then again that's more
common amongst pop's dead fraternity. Moreover, 7 years between compilations
is'nt bad for a record company is it?
A couple of albums of live material would'nt go amiss would it? But then
again very few companies will go to the trouble of satisfying fan obsession
unless they can guarantee sales of X million units. Economics innit. For now
I suppose I can only dream of what it would be like to wander through
Polydor's vaults/archives and ask them to do me a few C90's worth of
all the few thousand feet worth of live material never released. There's
always Camden Market bootlegs but I've still to get one which does'nt
consist of the mutterings of the people next to the mixing desk and one
which was'nt recorded from the bottom of a zinc bucket. "Direct from the
mixing Desk" I'm sure.
Took "The Modern World" out for a spin the the other night and christ
does'nt it sound dated? (Yes I know it's 14 years old!!) Probably
because that album more than any other caught Weller in his "let's be
like the Who" period. "London Traffic" is still a lesson in not
letting Bruce Foxton write any of the songs. Speaking of whom, where
is he now? The same applies to Rick Buckler.
Barry.

Bruce Foxton to his credit did write a great track which was a
B-side to When Your Young called Smithers Jones.
Bruce Foxton is now a session Guitarest, but spent a few years
nursing his wife through cancer. Rick Buckler is in some band I've
never heard of. I also listened to the albums the other day and have to
agree the first two have dated but All Mod Cons and Setting Sons
still sound good, regarding the greatest hits album what
a rip off, no comparison to Snap the true Greatest Hits album.
It'll be interesting to hear what Weller has to say about it?.

Re .11
I happened to play my one and only Jam album last week too (Setting
Sons) and agree that it hasn't dated. I reckon the Jam could stand
a revival much as the Clash have (concentrating on the more 'mature'
later material).
Why do you say Snap is better than TGH? I've been toying with the idea
of getting this album, but if Snap is better I'll look for that...

The reason Snaps better, is, not only does it contain all the

which are definetly worth a listen, out of the two, Snap is the
album to get.

It's strange that a band who like to tour never released a decent live

material collected over the years. And dumped onto one album.

| I was in Our Price (spit spit) yesterday, and the Greatest Hits album
was everywhere, along with most of their back catalogue (some of it at
a 'Nice Price', too). 'Snap' was nowhere to be found - I imagine the
record company is probably trying to suppress 'Snap' in an attempt to
boost sales of the Greatest Hits lp.
Didn't a CD version of 'Snap', which had a few less tracks than the
original double lp, come out not that long ago?

Weller's name for the outfit. Those un-loveable hacks at the N.M.E

Booked to see Paul Weller on 25th November in Bournemouth, first
live gig for ages and first time to see Paul Weller since Style Council
days, should be good.
Also, feeling wealthy (a rare occurence !), have bought a book
covering 92-95 on Paul Weller, called something like 'Days slip by and
Time fades'. I filled in one of the inserts with a CD single and now
get mailshots from Go! Discs every time he releases anything, plays
live etc. Quite useful as I don't buy much music press these days, but
this probably nominates me as sad-29-year old of the week !
