| "The Luxury Gap" was the most commercially successful album by Heaven
17 to date. They seem to have gone into relative obscurity because
they have fallen out with the record press and they are given very
little promotion by their record label.I fully recommend their latest
album "Teddy Bear, Duke, and Psycho".
Band member Martyn Ware is making more money as a producer. His latest
success was with Terence Trent D'Arby.
The British Electric Foundation was set up after Martyn and Ian
left The Human League. Although they lost a lot of money on that
venture they got to know a lot of contacts within the music industry,
and increased their skills.
Please see notes 250.19+ for more.

| As I like (good!) synth music I seem to have a fair amount of work
by 'H17' . The 1st album; Penthouse & Pavement, is excellent power-
pop with the odd hint of something more soulful.
Under BEF they produced a tape called: Music for Stowaways (you
can't play a record when stowingaway I presume!!) This is a tad
experimental though. My brother has a later album called "Pleasure"something
which he says is good.
I'd recommend anyone giving them at least a listen.

| One of the tracks featured on "Music For Stowaways" is "Uptown
Apocalypse".This is a recording by The Future - Martyn Ware, Ian
Craig-Marsh and Adi Newton. Adi left to form Clock DVA, Ian and
Martyn went on to form The Human League with Phil Oakey.
Another Future track to survive is "Dancevision" on B side of Human
League's "Holiday '80"single.
"The Future Tapes" advertised on inner sleeve of Heaven 17's "The
Luxury Gap" LP was never released due to wranglings with Phil Oakey
after the split.

Apparently Martin Ware has produced the new Scritti Politi single
'She's a Woman'.
There are a couple of albums called 'Methods of Dance Vol 1 & 2' which
contain a number of the tracks listed in the last two notes. I've never
seen them for sale anywhere except where I bought them (a rather shady
record shop in Bournemouth which wsa finally forced out of business for
selling bootlegs, where Benneton is now). Obscure, but pretty good if
you like the H17/BEF kind of stuff.

Unlike the Scritti Polliti version of She's A Woman, this is pretty
close in sound to the original, which IMHO is a pity (Anyone can do
a record again, adding to it is the trick). However, to be fair it
does sound more up to date than the original.
Still, on a couple of hears, I wouldn't buy it as a single. 5/10.

presumably gone back to their roots and re-named themselves B.E.F. ... after
all Heaven 17 was just a B.E.F. project after GG sang 2 cover versions on first

Glenn Gregory how his wife was and would Kino be releasing an album. He said
that she was in the studio. Afterwards I realised this may have been a fob-off
as a couple of weeks later there was a 4 page spread of Glenn and his "fancy

| The reason why BEF's version may sound so like the original is that remake
features Billy Preston who actually played on the original (he wasn't credited
on the original because Sly and Billy had fallen out).
BEF originally approached Curtis Mayfield to sing on Family Affair but a few
days later Curtis was involved in a serious accident which left him paralysed.
They then approached Sly himself but he was in de-tox at the time, then he got
out but was re-arrested 2 weeks afterwards.
For other tracks, names from Mick Jagger to Kate Bush were approached, studio
time with Maxi Priest was booked, but he didn't turn up.
Artists to actually appear on album are Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan, Billy
Preston, Green Gartside and Billy Mackenzie(he appeared on 1st BEF album of
cover versions).

Well, there's George Clinton, who always credits Stone as a funk
originator, and who keeps giving him album work (when it's Clinton's to
give).
"Family Affair", as one of the rawest-sounding songs Stone ever
released, is a really bad idea for a cover. It's like trying to cover
Young's "Tonight's the Night" or Big Star's "Holocaust"...

Despite earlier comments, She's a Woman is NOT in MoQ&D Volume 2.
Family Affair is along with tracks by Tina Turner, Billy Mackenzie,
Peter Darbyshire(? of Living in a Box?), Terence Trent D'Arby, and
others. If you liked the original the mixture of artists suggests
you'll like this one, but the lack of She's a Woman is, to me, a
terrible disappointment.

| Highlights (I better say in my opinion, to counter the usual dissenting voices!)
are: Mavis Staples singing "Song For You"
Billy McKenzie with "Free"
and Green with "I don't Know Why I Love You" which I suspect will be next
release (sleeve notes indicate that Green has done other versions of same song.
Also in sleeve notes, John Lydon is assured that the tracks that were done with
him will see the light of the day eventually, but they didn't fit in with the
concept of the album this time around.

I heard this song on my local radio station last week, a really beautiful
song, so I guess it has been released. I might try and get hold of a

Green doesn't sound like SW and that BEF are infinitely more talented.

| Jane, I totally agree with you. What great taste you have !
I'm a bit disappointed with the 12" though as it is basically the 7"mix with a
couple of extra chords in it. They have also made a strange choice of Bside -
it's Billy Preston singing the Beatles track " In My Life"....which grows on
you, I suppose.
Is this getting a lot of air play ? Family affair was Record If The Week on
Radio One and this helped it along (even though that didn't even get Top 20)
The album doesn't seem to have charted yet either.

an interview with Glenn Gregory about his new band "Ugly". Unfortunately I
missed the program, but this morning I managed to get hold of a pre-release CD
of the new single "Boom Is The Future". Not yet had the chance to listen to it

the band members is John Uriel (who I'm pretty certain has produced Claudia
Brucken). Other band member is Ian Wright...whoever he is.
