230.0. "Where are they now - Asia ?" by WARDER::REXLEY (I am very very very short) Thu Oct 06 1988 10:37

Does anyone know what happened to the supergroup Asia, they were composed
    of.....

John Wetton - Vocals, Bass ex-King Crimson
        Geoff Downes - Keyboards ex-Buggles
    	Carl Palmer - Drums ex-ELP
        Steve Howe - Guitar ex-Yes

They released a couple of albums in the early '80s, one of which
I was playing last night to my horror I find it was made in '83,
so what have they done since?. I saw them live in 81 or 82 at Wembley
Arena they were superb for the 60 minute they played.

I vaguely remember hearing that John Wetton was replaced with Greg
Lake but I could be wrong...

I heard that the John Wetton replacement did not happen. Instead
    Steve Howe left.

Am I right in thinking that Steve Howe and Steve Hackett (ex-Genesis)
formed a band called GTR a couple of years back?

Right on one point, wrong on the other :-

Asia recorded three albums Asia, Alpha and Astra they were all very
good if you like that kind of thing but they all sound the same ( I
did a compilation tape of three jumbled up a bit, and a friend who
thought they were ace couldn't tell which tracks were from which Albums)

John Wetton did in fact 'leave' the band - he was 'phoned by the Bands
manager a few days before they were due to record Alpha and told he was
surplus to requirements! - however I can't remember off-hand who he was
replaced by, I'll find out tonight.

Steve Howe left later, possibly after the third album, Astra and as the
band hasn't surfaced again its a fair bet that that was the end of the
	road for Asia.

Yup, the two Steves formed GTR and I think I'm right in saying that they
have now released two albums, I seem to remember the first one being a
	pretty good effort.

John Wetton put out a solo album last year in conjuction with Phil
Manzanera (sp?) of Roxy Music. It didn't really get any airplay or
sales in the States.

Are they still touring in the USA, I saw them 5 years ago on 1 of
2 nights they played in the UK for the Asia album. I know they toured
the States and Canada for the Alpha album......but since then ?

	Ooooops!,

contrary to what i said in a previous reply John Wetton didn't
actually leave the group, they began work on the second album without
him (don't know who was doing the vocals though); but in the end he was
reinstated as vocalist and was on both 'Alpha' and 'Astra'.

Sorry for any confusion I may have caused...

230.11Any more recent news ?????LASHAM::MCMASTER_EWhat, me worry ?Fri Jun 23 1989 18:119
This topic seems to have lapsed, but if anyone is monitoring it
who knows any further activity of the band's members since Asia....

I too am feeling deprived of further output of that brilliance.

    Any updates more than welcome.

    Bye for now, Euan

...It's been a long time since anything was entered in here, but
perhaps someone is still interested :-

Asia (line-up unknown at the mo') will be playing a 'secret' (so it'll
be announced in the NME soon !) warm up gig at The Wheatsheaf in Stoke.

The date has yet to be confirmed, but there is a strong possibility
that 'Medicine Man' will be supporting - if not they'll be rehearsing
upstairs that same day, to ensure they get in !!

this info. came from the Lead singer with Medicine Man, who says
they've been asked to do support by the owner of the venue, it just
depends whether Asia's record company or promoter have other plans.....

More info when I have it
